The process of felting is
ancient, with examples of the
finished material being dated as
thousands of years old.
The basic techniques to cre-
ate the fuzzy fiber are quite
simple.
“The art of felt making is rel-
atively easy, but requires a lot
of time and handwork,” Elfers
said. “To make felt, all you
need is wool fiber, soap and
water. The fiber is laid out in
the desired pattern, then soapy
water is used to wet down the
fiber. From there, it is all about
friction. As you rub the wet
fiber it begins to permanently
tangle as it shrinks, turning
from fiber to felt over time.”

Introducing
library seem simple, the intri-
cate nature of the exhibit has
attracted a lot of attention from
library patrons.
“It has a local flavor and it is
fun,” Colgan-Bennetts said.
“The children love it . They
look up at it and point at it —
and that’s the whole point of
having art in the library.”
Elfers has been a regular
patron of the library for years
and is a big supporter of the
increased attention that art is
attaining.
However, the public’s reac-
tion to the large sea creatures
hanging in the high center
raftered section of the library
has been somewhat over-
whelming for her.

“I am absolutely humbled by
the outpouring of support from
the public. People I have never
met have been contacting me,
telling me how much they love
the show. My puffer fish,
‘Spike,’ seems to be one of the
public's favorites, and I’ll have
to say he’s one of mine too,”
Elfers said.
Siuslaw Public Library will
be showing the giant felt
installation for the next couple
of months.
Elfers will be appearing at a
‘Meet the Artist’ reception on
Monday, May 15, from 11 to 2
p.m. in the Bromley Room of
the library.

Pacific Publishing and
Florence
Regional
Arts
Alliance (FRAA) invite artists
to submit their 2-D artwork
for the cover of the 2018
Edition of the Central Coast
Connection Phone Book.
It is an honor to have art-
work on the cover of a publi-
cation delivered to almost
2,000 residents each year.
Additionally, this year for
the first time, a $500 cash
prize is being offered by
Pacific Publishing to the win-
ner for the purchase of the art-
work, and all rights to publish
the artwork for any promotion-
al purposes determined by
Pacific Publishing.
The deadline for submis-
sion is June 30, and all sub-
missions must be done elec-
tronically through the FRAA
website.
Though submitting a photo
of artwork electronically, the
winner will need to provide
the original artwork to Pacific
Publishing in exchange for
the cash prize.
Artwork must be the origi-
nal painting of the artist sub-
mitting the entry and made
within the last three years.
Painting can be any medium
(oil, pastel, watercolor), but
please, no photography this
year.
Submissions must be a ver-
tical rendering to fit the cover
of the phone book. Artwork
should relate to our locale
(Yachats to Reedsport and
east to Deadwood), whether it
shows scenery, buildings,
people or another area of
interest, and the artist does
not need to be a Florence res-
ident. Each artist is limited to
three entries.
The winning artist will
receive a photo and bio in the
phone book.
Pacific Publishing will
determine the winner by July
7.
Notice of being chosen as
the winner will be made via e-
mail during the week of July
10.
