SIUSLAW NEWS SCHOOL NEWSLETTER ❚ JANUARY 2017 SCHOOL ZONE A Monthly Newsletter for the Siuslaw and Mapleton Schools and Florence Community PTA T H E S E ST U D E N T S A R E G O I N G P LA C ES Siuslaw Middle and Elementary students compete in annual Geography Bee F All of these students scored highly in the preliminary qualifying round — 25 moderate- ly hard multiple-choice questions offered to all fourth- through eighth-grade students. The top 11 students from the elementary and the top 10 students from the middle school were declared finalists. The winners at Siuslaw Elementary School were: third place Tyler Johns, second place Riley Olson and first place Jesse Holden. At Siuslaw Middle School, the winners were: third place Matthew Fusaro, second place Owen Harklerode and first place Brea Blankenship. Both Jesse and Brea will now take the state qualifying test to see if they will be able to compete in the state finals. Congratulations to all of our participants! The students spent two weeks researching and reporting on the care and requirements of their new pet and were thrilled to finally meet Rose, a one year old hedgehog. Rose will be in class with the students for the rest of the year and will support the stu- dents as a reward for hard work accomplished. The students are enjoying feeding her meal worms and watching her run (faster than you would imagine) on the reading rug when the day's work is completed. At the middle school, those competing for the championship were: sixth-graders Michaela Butchart, Ava Glowacki and Owen Harklerode; seventh-graders CJ Franklin, Camp LaCouture and Jason Rawlins; and eighth-graders Brea Blankenship, Rhys Fleming, Matthew Fusaro and Laena Jagoe.
