In fact, it took about 6 minutes, when senior point guard AJ Foster picked up his second consecutive steal and scored on a fastbreak to put the Sailors ahead 12-2. Mapleton never really looked back. “We’ve got a pretty good record against McKenzie, but it’s always been very close,” said coach Will Crook. “This time, our defense and offense really dominated.” By the end of the first quarter, the Eagles had found the basket just three times, with the Sailors holding a 10-point,16-6 lead. Fishing for the various warm water fish species will slow as water tempera- tures cool. There are numerous lakes in the Florence area that can pro- vide good opportunity. Siltcoos and Tahkenitch lakes are open for wild coho until Dec. 31. Fishing has been fair to slow. Casting spinners near the weed lines and trolling plugs or spinners can be effective on fish that recently entered the lake. It came down to freethrows Tuesday night at Cottage Grove, where the Vikings were within striking distance of upsetting the No. 2-ranked Lions. After a close battle throughout the first three periods, Siuslaw pulled ahead on scoring from senior Kyle King and junior Trent Reavis, who helped put the Viks ahead 42-35. However, foul trouble for Siuslaw sent the Lions to the charity line 12 times in the quarter, where they sank 11-of-12 freethrows during a 17- 3 run. Cottage Grove picked up its third consecu- tive win, 52-45. King led the Viks with 17 points. Reavis had 13. Last night’s home game against Cascade was cancelled due to weather conditions. Next game is 7:15 p.m. Monday at Sweet Home.
