Though Cottage Grove got
an early lead over Siuslaw
during Tuesday’s game at the
Lions’ den, the lady Vikings
battled back to take the lead
with two minutes on the
clock.
“We knew Cottage Grove
was going to be tough, so our
goal was to wear them down
and make a run at the end,”
said Siuslaw coach Clint
Tatum. “They kept firing
girls who were 6-foot-1 and
6-foot-2 at us, and we just
kept a fast pace.”
The Lions focused in on
Siuslaw’s top scorer, senior
guard Destinie Tatum, who
they often double teamed or
trapped in an effort to neu-
tralize her as a threat.

It didn’t take long for Mapleton to
get the upper hand against visiting
McKenzie on Tuesday night.
In fact, it took about 6 minutes,
when senior point guard AJ Foster
picked up his second consecutive steal
and scored on a fastbreak to put the
Sailors ahead 12-2.
Mapleton never really looked back.
“We’ve got a pretty good record
against McKenzie, but it’s always
been very close,” said coach Will
Crook. “This time, our defense and
offense really dominated.”
By the end of the first quarter,
the Eagles had found the basket
just three times, with the Sailors
holding a 10-point,16-6 lead.
In
the
second
quarter,
Mapleton’s high-pressure defense
held the Eagles to just 7 points and
forced 6 turnovers thanks to

Holdover trout will be
available in most lakes.
Fishing for the various
warm water fish species
will slow as water tempera-
tures cool. There are
numerous lakes in the
Florence area that can pro-
vide good opportunity.
Siltcoos and Tahkenitch
lakes are open for wild
coho until Dec. 31. Fishing
has been fair to slow.
Casting spinners near the
weed lines and trolling
plugs or spinners can be
effective on fish that
recently entered the lake.
It came down to freethrows Tuesday night at
Cottage Grove, where the Vikings were within
striking distance of upsetting the No. 2-ranked
Lions.
After a close battle throughout the first three
periods, Siuslaw pulled ahead on scoring from
senior Kyle King and junior Trent Reavis, who
helped put the Viks ahead 42-35.
However, foul trouble for Siuslaw sent the
Lions to the charity line 12 times in the quarter,
where they sank 11-of-12 freethrows during a 17-
3 run. Cottage Grove picked up its third consecu-
tive win, 52-45.
King led the Viks with 17 points. Reavis had
13.
Last night’s home game against Cascade was
cancelled due to weather conditions. Next game
is 7:15 p.m. Monday at Sweet Home.

Murphy is a very
sweet boy that takes
a little time to warm
up, but once he does
- watch out...he will fol-
low you around and try
to supervise whatever
you’re doing. A very
curious feline. Murphy is 5 years old and
gets along great with other kitties.
Linus is a very
quiet boy, look-
ing for a quiet
family. He came
to our shelter 7
years ago when
he weighed only
1 lb. Linus loves
nothing more than lying in a patch of sun
near the window and is very good with other
kitties too.
