At 145 pounds, Scott Simmons pinned North Bend’s Ashton Blondell in just 51 seconds. The Vikings lost at 132 pounds and 152 pounds, but still secured an easy victory in team scoring. Dec. 9 Siuslaw’s wrestling team opened its season Thursday night at home, taking on North Bend and Reedsport in a duel meet that the Viks ended up splitting. In the first match-up, Siuslaw had little trouble with the Bulldogs, outscoring them 36-9, due in part to forfeits in the upper weight classes to Vikings Jesus Sierra (160 pounds), Nick Steinman (170 pounds) and Kainan Lane (285 pounds). The Vikings got into foul trouble early, with all five of their starters — Brogan Cornish, Jared Brandt, Marcos Reyna-Ayala, Kyle King and Trent Reavis — each chalking up a pair of fouls in the first half. Fortunately, Perry was able to turn to his bench. In particu- lar, junior forward Jake Hickson, who came in to post 11 points in the second quarter and 15 points overall to lead Siuslaw in scoring. In fact, 31 of the team’s 65 points came from the bench, with Ricky Jones and Hickson contributing 25 of those points. Jones sank 10 points, includ- ing a pair of 3-pointers and four freethrows, to help the Vikings come from behind to tie the game at 25-25 entering the half. Fishing for the various warm water fish species will slow as water tempera- tures cool. There are numerous lakes in the Florence area that can pro- vide good opportunity. Siltcoos and Tahkenitch lakes have closed to wild coho. Other fishing has been fair to slow. Casting spinners near the weed lines and trolling plugs or spinners can be effective on fish that recently entered the lake. SIUSLAW RIVER: Chinook The Siuslaw River and bay is open for Chinook salmon. Fishing is slow. Trolling herring in the lower bay is an effective technique. Eggs and bob- ber can be productive in the upper bay and river. Fishing is slow. Fish are throughout the bay and river. Eggs and bobber can be productive in the upper bay and river as the season progresses. Steelhead fishing opened on the Alsea River on Nov. 1. Fish are entering the mainstem with the first entering steelhead near the town of Alsea. Casting spinners, drifting bait or using a bobber and jig can be effective.
