SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2016 OBITUARIES Museum adds new board members Oregon Coast Military Museum (OCMM) announced the appointment of two new board members to fill vacancies. “We had several very quali- fied candidates to fill our two openings this time. It is a great challenge to have, and it was a challenge to select only two,” stated OCMM Board President Wayne Sharpe. John Murphey, a long-time Florence resident, joins the board, bringing several years of community service with him. Having served on numerous boards and committees over the years, he believes in giving back to the community that has given him so much. He and his wife Jean are the owners of Coast Insurance, and John has been involved in that industry for the past 17 years. “I was introduced to the Oregon Coast Military Museum recently and was moved to be a part of this wonderful organiza- tion,” Murphey said. “ I look forward to being a part of an organization that honors our vet- erans and preserves our history.” J.P. Badel, a recent Florence arrival who has family ties in the community, is the second new board member. He and his wife Lynn are the new owners of Bay Street Family Tyes. Recently retired from law enforcement, he has always been active in the communities where he has lived, serving on boards of several professional and non- profit organizations. “My goal as a board member for the Oregon Coast Military Museum is to honor our veterans and educate our community about the sacrifices our veterans have made in the fight for the freedom and liberty we enjoy today,” he said. He was a long time resident of Florence. He was born on Dec 10, 1933, the son of Ralph and Icle Hoberg where his parents traveled over the hill to Eugene for his birth. Aft er his par- ents divorced, Gary and his mother moved to Eugene when he was in the eighth grade. Th ere he fi nished high school at South Eugene and joined the Army. He served in Ko- rea from 1954 to 1955. Aft er the Army he returned to Eugene to help his mother with her health issues. He was a very devoted son. He visited his Dad, Ralph & Eva Hines-Hoberg, in Florence oft en and that was where he re-united with Wanda Ziemer his best friend and love of his life. Th ey were married on May 12, 1956. Gary was an active member of the Florence community his entire life. He volunteered as a fi re fi ghter for many years and served as the Fire Chief from 1964-1968. Gary also served on the Rural Fire board as a director. He was a member of the Florence Elks Lodge #1858 and member of the Florence Rotary Club, serving as the 1983-84 President and a Paul Harris Fellow. Gary made several long lasting contributions to the Florence community. He and his wife Wanda ran Hoberg’s Chevron Ser- vice for over 30 years. One of his most long lasting contributions to the community was his helping to found Oregon Pacifi c Bank. Being a founding board member was very important to him and helped this community grow strong. Gary enjoyed living in the Pa- cifi c Northwest and deeply enjoyed being outdoors. He and Wanda were members of the Emerald Road Runners four-wheel drive club and they enjoyed four-wheeling on the beaches and Eastern Oregon as oft en as they could. Aft er selling their business in 1992, to their daughter Shasta & husband, they retired and would oft en pack a few things and head out on the open road to go hunting, or visit friends and family. He also took pride in his beautiful yard. Gary is preceded in death by his wife Wanda, step brother Ray Hines and parents. He is survived by son Rand & Beverly Hoberg of Springfi eld; daughter Shasta & Kevin McMullen of Florence; and son Jim Hoberg & wife Carrie Moore of Florence. Grand children Anthony & Beige McMullen, Mckenzie & Justin Kramer, Jennifer Hoberg, Jessica Hoberg, Jordan & Jammie Hoberg, Jenna Hoberg. Great grandchildren, Gavin Hoberg, Gesme, Sarhara, & Samantha Kramer, and Allen & Jade McMul- len; his brother, Richard and wife Debra Hoberg A memorial for Gary will be held at Burn’s Riverside Chapel at 2765 Kingwood St, Florence, OR on Saturday November 5 th at 11:00am. Dollie “Noah” Austin, born and raised in Coos Bay, married at age 15 and worked as a cook for Coos Bay School District for 32 years. Raymond Austin was born in Oklahoma but came to Coos Bay at the age of 3, He worked as a logger before retiring. The two were married Nov. 1, 1952, in North Bend. They currently live in Greentrees and say they both feel blessed every day to be together living in such a beautiful place. They have five children: Alice and Jim Burns of BIRTH GAUDERMAN—Carter Jo Gauderman, a girl weigh- ing 6 lbs., 0.7 ozs., was born to Samantha Nicole Guaderman (Woosley) and Drew Patrick Gauderman of Florence, on Oct. 23, 2016, at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend. Van Citters, of Florence, p a s s e d away Oct. 27, 2016. He was k n o w n a r o u n d Florence as “Mr. Van” since retir- ing here in David Van 1999. Citters David was born in Orange City, Iowa, on May 21, 1929, to Charles and Min Van Citters. He served as ET on the U.S.S. Yosemite in the closing year of World War II and as Lt. USAF Logistics in the 1950s. He graduated from the University of Iowa and spent his 35-year career with AT&T, Collins Radio Company and Rockwell International (large- ly USG and NASA programs). David is survived by his wife, Dorothy; four children and eight grandchildren. Dorothy and David cele- brated their 66th wedding anniversary Sept. 14. They have enjoyed a full round of visits from family members over recent weeks. Personal memories were observed among the direct family in anticipation of the passing of David Dean Van Citters, as expected under hos- pice care. Family members include M before he passed away. She worked as a bookkeeper in Springfield for a time before moving to Florence in 1978. She then contin- ued book- keeping in the area for 14 years b e f o r e moving to Roberta Madras in Lawson 1992. It was there she served as church secretary for 11 years. Bobbie moved back to her hometown in Eugene in 2005 and was very active in her church serving as bookkeeper, decorator and greeter. She loved snowmen, pugs, her western movies and The Hallmark Channel. For her remaining years, she returned to the coast in Florence and is now with the Lord. Bobbie is survived by sister Sinola; daughters Denise, Carrie and Stephanie; and grandchildren Tess, Jason and Troy. A memorial service will be held at Westside Baptist Church in Eugene on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 1 p.m. Private interment was held at Eagle Point National Cemetery. CEN TR HOLMES—Jodi Holmes, formerly of Florence, passed away Oct. 18, 2016, in Roseburg, following a six-month battle with a d i s e a s e known as M o t o r Jodi Holmes S y s t e m s Atrophy. Jodi was born Oct. 8, 1961, in Baker City, Ore. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Holmes, and her loving grandparents Norma and Laurina Gaustad. She is survived by her mother, Linda Stewart; brother Eric Holmes; sister Debra Murphy and her three sons: Robert Brandon Holmes (Jamie); Jason Carrick (Seana); Michael Kirchhefer; and her three nieces.
