In August, PTA and the elementary school were the recipients of National PTA’s School of Excellence Award for 2015-2017. Guest speakers at meetings throughout the year were Ethel Angal, Siuslaw School District Superintendent; Bou Kilgore and Steve Moser, representing the ASPIRE program at the high school; Jonathan Hornung and students from the high school LINK program; Lynn Anderson, Native Education Director; Becky Holbrook, elementary school volunteer art teacher; and Lyza Houlihan, School Garden coordinator. Instead of products, the PTA voted to use the points earned to receive gift cards instead of merchandise from the program. UPC codes from the following products are sent in for points: Bic, Campbell’s, Pace, Pepperidge Farm, Spaghetti-Os, Swanson’s and V8. The program will accept all UPCs from these products, including ones without the Labels for Education logo through July. Starting in August, only UPC codes with the Labels for Education logo attached will be accepted. There are collection boxes in the Siuslaw Elementary School Office, TELLE CHAN OS BY PTA gathers labels, UPCs for rewards Meyer Community Rewards, the AmazonSmile program and Viking apparel sales pro- vide the money that allow the PTA to provide grants. To learn more about how you can give back to the schools through these pro- grams, visit the PTA’s website at www.florencepta.org, and click on “Ways to Support PTA.” The PTA scholarship pro- gram is funded primarily through the Box Tops collec- tions at Siuslaw Middle and Elementary schools. PTA awards scholarships to graduating seniors in the Florence area who are going on to study for careers in teaching and working with children. This year’s recipients are Mikaela Siegel, Holly Hicks, Nikita Williams and Taylor Richards-Sykora; all graduat- ing from SHS. This year, $1,500 was given to support the 5th and 7th grade Outdoor School to be held at the end of May and early June. Fundraisers such as Safeway eScrip (which is going away as of June 1), General Mills Box Tops, Fred PHOT Wanted The great thing about the Florence Community PTA is its mission to support and give back to Siuslaw schools. This school year, PTA funded 21 grants to teachers and staff throughout Siuslaw School district, representing a total of $5,553.02 given. Of the 21 grants approved, six were for Siuslaw High School, seven for the middle school and 10 for the elementary school. Grants approved this year included: Band music Music bells Art supplies Civil War field trip iPad covers Marching band shoes Transportation fees for a college tour College pennants to pro- mote post-secondary paths Culinary Arts kitchen recertification Student reading work- books Run/Challenge and Fall Fitness Fair; Holiday Shoppe at SES; Book Fair Diner dur- ing Dr. Seuss week; dinners provided on long parent- teacher conference nights; SES Talent Show; and the week-long Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week festivities. Oregon State PTA Conference and Leadership Convention, where four local delegates attended. New Board elections for the 2016-17 school year were held at the May meeting. Tiffany Holdahl was newly elected for the position of president. Susy Lacer (Secretary) and Jennifer Wilks (treasurer) were elected for second terms. The new board will take office on July 1. Current PTA President Diane McCalmont thanked members and the Board for their involvement in PTA this year, and gave a shout-out and gift to outgoing Vice President Mike Kilgore. As the school year winds down, Florence PTA is already discussing projects for the next school year. Anyone can become a mem- ber of the Florence PTA. You don’t have to have children in school and don’t have to devote hours of time to volun- teering. All that is required is that you have a desire to sup- port education and children and youth in our community, state and nation. You can even become a Business Sponsor by downloading an application form from our website.
