The Florence Community PTA
is going to try to get as much as
possible from the The Labels for
Education Program. Instead of
products, the PTA voted to use the
points earned to receive gift cards
instead of merchandise from the
program.
UPC codes from the following
products are sent in for points: Bic,
Campbell’s, Pace, Pepperidge
Farm, Spaghetti-Os, Swanson’s
and V8. The program will accept
all UPCs from these products,
including ones without the Labels
for Education logo through July.
Starting in August, only UPC
codes with the Labels for
Education logo attached will be
accepted.
There are collection boxes in the

PTA to provide grants.
To learn more about how
you can give back to the
schools through these pro-
grams, visit the PTA’s website
at www.florencepta.org, and
click on “Ways to Support
PTA.”
The PTA scholarship pro-
gram is funded primarily
through the Box Tops collec-
tions at Siuslaw Middle and

PTA awards scholarships to
graduating seniors in the
Florence area who are going
on to study for careers in
teaching and working with
children.
This year’s recipients are
Mikaela Siegel, Holly Hicks,
Nikita Williams and Taylor

In addition to grants, the

The great thing about the
Florence Community PTA is
its mission to support and give
back to Siuslaw schools. This
school year, PTA funded 21
grants to teachers and staff
throughout Siuslaw School
district, representing a total of
$5,553.02 given. Of the 21
grants approved, six were for
Siuslaw High School, seven
for the middle school and 10
for the elementary school.
Grants approved this year
included:
Band music
Music bells
Art supplies
Civil War field trip
iPad covers
Marching band shoes
Transportation fees for a
college tour
College pennants to pro-
mote post-secondary paths
Culinary Arts kitchen
recertification
Student reading work-

week-long Teacher and Staff

Oregon
State
PTA
Conference and Leadership
Convention, where four local
delegates attended.
New Board elections for the
2016-17 school year were held
at the May meeting. Tiffany
Holdahl was newly elected for
the position of president. Susy
Lacer (Secretary) and Jennifer
Wilks (treasurer) were elected
for second terms. The new
board will take office on July
1.
Current PTA President
Diane McCalmont thanked
members and the Board for
their involvement in PTA this
year, and gave a shout-out and
gift to outgoing Vice President
Mike Kilgore.
As the school year winds
down, Florence PTA is already
discussing projects for the next
school year.
Anyone can become a mem-
ber of the Florence PTA. You
don’t have to have children in
school and don’t have to
devote hours of time to volun-
teering. All that is required is
that you have a desire to sup-
port education and children
and youth in our community,
state and nation. You can even
become a Business Sponsor by
downloading an application
form from our website.
