SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, MAY 18, 2016 3 B Mapleton equestrian rides solo, ropes high marks The Mapleton High School equestrian team had a lone rider this season, with senior Chet Geddes representing MHS and combining talents with a group of riders from Willamette High school for the team events in team penning and birangle. This was Geddes’ fourth season in OHSET (Oregon High School Equestrian Teams) and he did well this year, placing high in multiple events. Geddes took first place in his favorite event, roping; was second in steer daubing; sev- enth in working rancher; eighth with his Willamette team in team penning; and 16th in individual flags. Geddes competed in state competition this past weekend, May 14, in Redmond, Ore., against the top three riders from all districts, and qualified for regionals in roping with fifth place. This season, Geddes added a little competion for himself and decided to use his young horse, Tessa, for roping during her first year in competition. “I am so happy Tessa got to Chet Geddes rides Tessa during roping competition at OHSET district competition. rope with me for my last year ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Annmarie Precht Siusla w H.S . Track & Field The junior sprinter and jumper qualified for the 4A State Track and Field meet in four events last week, winning the 100 and 200 meters at the Far West District Meet. She also ran a leg of the winning 4x400 relay and was fourth in the long jump with a qualifying mark of 16’6.75”. Honorable Mention Trent Reavis Honorable mention goes to her classmate, sophomore thrower Trent Reavis who won the shot put and the discus at the district meet, earning the boys thrower of the meet award as well Sailors from 1B competed in track and field before this season, has been run- ning decent times in the 400 meters all season. But last week, she asked to switch to the 800- meter race. “Coach Crook and I had been thinking about the same thing,” said Longo. “We felt she had the grit to run the 800 meters, and had a better chance of reaching stet and doing well in that event.” They were right. With her second-place finish in the event at district (3:09.44), Triebskorn earned a slot at the state event this weekend in Eugene, where Longo feels her chances are good for a place- ment. “She took a lot of people by surprise,” Longo said of Triebskorn’s performance. “McKenzie had to work overtime to beat Clarissa.” All told, the Sailors claimed all 126 points off of a team of eight, without competing in the 100, 200 or 400 meters, high jump, NED HICKSON/SIUSLAW NEWS pole vault or 4x100 relay. “The girls worked hard and Mapleton’s Tyler Packebush will compete in two events at state, including the pole vault. smart to get every point,” said The team’s only individual Josi Hays, who has been a strong mark of 86 feet, followed by Longo. champion of the meet was junior presence in the throws all season, Wells in second place (81 feet, 10 along with freshmen Haley Wells inches) and Michael in fourth and Michael. place (77 feet, 3 inches). In the javelin, Michael quali- fied for state with a throw of 91 feet, 4 inches for second place. Richards was third (79 feet, 4 inches) and freshman Brittany Wilson was fifth (58 feet, 10 inches). “And all of these girls will be returning next season,” said Longo. “With what we have coming back, and a strong group of middle schoolers coming in, next year is going to be exciting for our program.” Advancing to state for the girls will be: Triebskorn — 800 meters and 4x400 relay Richards — 3,000 meters and 4x400 relay Hays — Discus and shot put Haley Wells — Discus Michael — Javelin and 4x400 relay Rodet — 4x400 relay Four members of the Mapleton boys track team will also get a chance to compete at iconic Hayward Field in Eugene this weekend. Junior runners and vaulters Tyler Packebush and Hunter Simington each came away with a district title, Packebush with a PR in the 110-meter hurdles (18.58) and Simington with a PR in the pole vault (12-6). Simington and Packebush will also compete in the 4x100-meter race with AJ Foster and Evan Moso, thanks to a wildcard draw after finishing third at district (47.23). “They have been winning all season but had a bad handoff at district,” said Longo. “But the 6A, 5A and 1A each have a wild- card, based on the fastest times of the season. Their times earned them the wildcard at state.” Also competing at state will be Cole Spencer, who cleared 5 feet, 6 inches in the high jump foe sec- ond place — a leap that isn’t a personal best. “Knowing you can jump high- er than your district mark is a good thing heading into state,” said Longo. Sophomore Tanner Wilson will be on the state javelin run- way, thanks to a second-place district mark of 140 feet, 9 inch- es. Packebush, who placed sec- ond in the pole vault at 10 feet, 6 inches will join Simington in the event at state. “It was a great day for us all around,” said Longo. “We’re excited to see what we can do at state, and also for what we have to look forward to next year.” The OSAA 1A state track and field championships will be held this Thursday and Friday, May 19 and 20, at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field in Eugene.
