Mapleton equestrian rides solo, ropes high marks
The Mapleton High School
equestrian team had a lone
rider this season, with senior
Chet Geddes representing
MHS and combining talents
with a group of riders from
Willamette High school for the
team events in team penning
and birangle.
This was Geddes’ fourth
season in OHSET (Oregon
High School Equestrian
Teams) and he did well this
year, placing high in multiple
events.
Geddes took first place in
his favorite event, roping; was
second in steer daubing; sev-
enth in working rancher;
eighth with his Willamette
team in team penning; and
16th in individual flags.
Geddes competed in state
competition this past weekend,
May 14, in Redmond, Ore.,
against the top three riders
from all districts, and qualified
for regionals in roping with
fifth place.
This season, Geddes added a
little competion for himself
and decided to use his young
horse, Tessa, for roping during
her first year in competition.

ning decent times in the 400

she asked to switch to the 800-

“Coach Crook and I had been
thinking about the same thing,”
said Longo. “We felt she had the
grit to run the 800 meters, and
had a better chance of reaching
stet and doing well in that event.”
They were right.
With her second-place finish
in the event at district (3:09.44),
Triebskorn earned a slot at the
state event this weekend in
Eugene, where Longo feels her
chances are good for a place-
ment.
“She took a lot of people by
surprise,” Longo said of
Triebskorn’s
performance.
“McKenzie had to work overtime
to beat Clarissa.”

“I have been taking her
since she was two years
old, doing various events
with her, but finally got to
use her for my favorite
event and she loved it.”
Geddes said he’s thank-
ful for everyone who sup-
ported the equestrian team
throughout the years.
“Our good friends at
Iron horse logging, the
boys at Davidson
Industries — not only for
there donation but for
Richard, our pop can gath-
ering man,” said geddes,
who also thanked Pop’s

shot put (30 feet, 5 inches), with
Wells landing third (27 feet, 27
feet, 1 inch).
In the javelin, Michael quali-
fied for state with a throw of 91
feet, 4 inches for second place.
Richards was third (79 feet, 4
inches) and freshman Brittany
Wilson was fifth (58 feet, 10
inches).
“And all of these girls will be
returning next season,” said
Longo. “With what we have
coming back, and a strong group
of middle schoolers coming in,
next year is going to be exciting
for our program.”
Advancing to state for the girls
will be:
Triebskorn — 800 meters and
4x400 relay
Richards — 3,000 meters and
4x400 relay
Hays — Discus and shot put
Haley Wells — Discus
Michael — Javelin and 4x400
relay
Rodet — 4x400 relay
Four members of the
Mapleton boys track team will
also get a chance to compete at
iconic Hayward Field in Eugene
this weekend.
Junior runners and vaulters
Tyler Packebush and Hunter
Simington each came away with
a district title, Packebush with a
PR in the 110-meter hurdles
(18.58) and Simington with a PR
in the pole vault (12-6).
Simington and Packebush will
also compete in the 4x100-meter
race with AJ Foster and Evan
Moso, thanks to a wildcard draw
after finishing third at district
(47.23).
“They have been winning all
season but had a bad handoff at
district,” said Longo. “But the
6A, 5A and 1A each have a wild-
card, based on the fastest times of
the season. Their times earned
them the wildcard at state.”
Also competing at state will be
Cole Spencer, who cleared 5 feet,
6 inches in the high jump foe sec-
ond place — a leap that isn’t a
personal best.
“Knowing you can jump high-
er than your district mark is a
good thing heading into state,”
said Longo.
Sophomore Tanner Wilson
will be on the state javelin run-
way, thanks to a second-place
district mark of 140 feet, 9 inch-
es.
Packebush, who placed sec-
ond in the pole vault at 10 feet, 6
inches will join Simington in the
event at state.
“It was a great day for us all
around,” said Longo. “We’re
excited to see what we can do at
state, and also for what we have
to look forward to next year.”
The OSAA 1A state track and
field championships will be held
this Thursday and Friday, May
19 and 20, at the University of
Oregon’s Hayward Field in
Eugene.
