SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2016 2016 Rhododendron Festival logo chosen Florence Area Chamber of Commerce and the 2016 Rhododendron Fest- ival committee announced the winning logo that best fit the “Catch the Wave” 2016 Rhododendron Fest- ival theme. The committee selected the winning logo from an annual contest. The original concept was created by Scott Steward of Creative Wave Marketing Solutions and implemented by graphic designer Susan Johnson. The $250 award will be shared by Johnson and Steward. The 2016 Rhody Days Festival is Friday, May 20, through Sunday, May 22. Cafe 60 is available for those who prefer to make new friends in a dining room setting. 7 A Florence Community PTA is in the final weeks of a member- ship drive to reach 150 mem- bers. If the group reaches this goal by March 1, it will receive a prize from the Oregon PTA. More importantly, it will have 150 people in the community showing their support for local students. “We have a special member- ship incentive right now. For any current member who brings a guest to a meeting, and the guest joins our PTA, both the current and new member will receive a Dutch Bros. gift card,” said Diane McCalmont, PTA president. “At just $11 per year, our membership dues are an easy way to way to support our kids. Even if you don’t have time to volunteer for PTA activities, we still invite you to become a member,” she added. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at 4 p.m., in the Siuslaw Elementary School library. Meetings are open to the public and everyone is wel- come to attend. Free child care and snacks are provided. “You don’t have to be a teacher or have a child in the school system to become a member here,” said Susy Lacer, PTA secretary. “Everyone is welcome to join our PTA, including businesses and even out-of-town relatives who want to support students in Florence.” The Florence Community Parent Teacher Association is a nonprofit organization that serves all of the public schools in the Siuslaw School District. Business sponsors are acknowledged as PTA support- ers at each of its events throughout the year, and are included in the newsletter, which is distributed to parents of more than 600 elementary school students monthly. Business dues are $25 per year. Membership forms for indi- viduals or businesses are avail- able at the schools, or from at www.FlorencePTA.org. Completed forms and pay- ments can be mailed to PO Box 1140, Florence OR 97439, or dropped off at any school. Florence City Council grant applications due Monday The City Council Grant Program will be accepting applications through Monday, Feb. 15, at 5 p.m. Applicants can apply for up to $1,000 and the program will be awarding a total of $5,000 for fiscal year 2015- 16. Applicant funding requests need to relate to at least one of the City Council Goals.
