nn Evanow receives ashes on the forehead from
Georgia DuBose, Episcopal Priest of St. Andrew’s
Church, while Episcopal Deacon Steve Avery pre-
pares to do the ceremony for John Evanow, at the “Ashes
to Go” celebration of Ash Wednesday, Feb. 10, in Old
Town. This ancient ceremony marks the start of the Holy
Season of Lent in the church year, leading to the great
Easter celebration. The ashes symbolize the mortality of
humans, reminds them of their failings and offers them
the promise of God’s love and forgiveness and their invi-
tation to renewal.

Florence Community PTA is
in the final weeks of a member-
ship drive to reach 150 mem-
bers. If the group reaches this
goal by March 1, it will receive
a prize from the Oregon PTA.
More importantly, it will have
150 people in the community
showing their support for local
students.
“We have a special member-
ship incentive right now. For
any current member who
brings a guest to a meeting, and
the guest joins our PTA, both
the current and new member
will receive a Dutch Bros. gift
card,” said Diane McCalmont,
PTA president. “At just $11 per
year, our membership dues are
an easy way to way to support
our kids. Even if you don’t
have time to volunteer for PTA
activities, we still invite you to
become a member,” she added.
Meetings are held on the
third Tuesday of each month at
4 p.m., in the Siuslaw
Elementary School library.
Meetings are open to the
public and everyone is wel-
come to attend. Free child care
and snacks are provided.
“You don’t have to be a
teacher or have a child in the
school system to become a
member here,” said Susy Lacer,
PTA secretary. “Everyone is
welcome to join our PTA,
including businesses and even
out-of-town relatives who want
to support students in
Florence.”
