2 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2015 BIRTH OBITUARY ALMERICO—John J. Almerico, 91, formerly of Florence, passed away Nov. 15, 2015. J o h n was born May 31, 1924, a native son of San John Almerico Francisco, Calif., he graduated from George Washington High School in 1942. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps stationed in the China- Burma-India theater. After the war, John graduat- ed from the University of San Francisco with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He later moved to Bakersfield, Calif., where he met his wife of 55 years, Ruth Bowe, at a Catholic Social Club dance. They married on June 30, 1960. Together they moved back to San Francisco and had three children: John Paul, and twins James and Jacqueline. John’s early career was spent working as a bookkeeper for Pacific Fruit Express, KRON TV and KBAK TV. He returned to government service with the U.S. Department of Labor in San Francisco in 1962, working as an investigator and ultimately served as area director for the Wage and Hour Division until his retirement in 1981. John always enjoyed travel- ing with his wife and family. In the course of his life he vis- ited all 50 states, as well as Canada, Mexico, Ireland, the UK, Europe, Greece, Turkey, Morocco, India and China. John and Ruth spent their retirement years together in Lake of the Pines and Folsom, Calif., and later Florence, until Ruth’s passing earlier this year. John and Ruth will be interred together in the Roseburg National Cemetery in Oregon. He will be remembered for his great stories, good humor and love for his family. John is survived his son, John Paul Almerico; son and daughter-in-law, James and Banafsheh Almerico; daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline and Martin Adams; stepson and daughter-in-law, Donald Poindexter and Mary Anderson; stepson and daugh- ter-in-law, Ronald and Sydney Poindexter; grandchildren: Sarita, Nicholas, Jonathan, Ian, Blake, Amber, Amy, Joshua, Nicole, Desiree, Adam and Lauren; and 19 great- grandchildren. Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
