The process began in October with 10 people applying for the position. Six were selected to give PowerPoint presentations and answer a series of questions posed by the commission- ers. Three finalists were selected, one of which would be chosen to be the new port manager. That was the plan. In reality, the board could not agree on any of the three finalists. The con- sensus reached was: none of the above. After the executive session, board president Ron Caputo said, “We have come to a consensus that we would like to have more applicants and we are going to open the application process again for another 30 days. Then we will go through review process again.” Commissioner Nancy Rickard made a motion to “go through the process of ask- ing for applicants to begin, that it be pub- licized and that we review current appli- cations that we have that were not previ- ously opened.” Before the motion was seconded, commissioner Mike Buckwald cau- tioned the board that, “If we don’t sec- ond this, we’ve got a mess.” Caputo seconded the motion. Commissioner Terry Duman expressed his frustrations over not having reached a decision. “I feel like by doing this, any time we come to an impasse on who we are going to choose as manager, we are going to come back to this same argu- ment again. Let’s go back out,” Duman said. “We have board mem- bers that aren’t in agreement with each other over selections before we have even called for a vote on a manager and now we are going back out for new applications. “I feel that if it comes back the same way next time and you don’t have a general consensus, it will go back for applications again.” Caputo said, “Hopefully we will come up with someone we can have a consensus on. That is the plan.” See PORT 8A KETTLE KICK - OFF Ambulance, fire districts to share HR position Agreement helps streamline process, improve relationship between agencies B Y C HANTELLE M EYER Siuslaw News Officially starting Tuesday, Dec. 1, Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue (SVFR) finance and human resources manager Julie Brown will split her time equally between SVFR and Western Lane Ambulance District (WLAD). The fire district and the ambulance district decid- ed to share the human resource and finance position earlier this fall, when Fire Chief Jim Langborg said that he and WLAD Executive Director Brian Burright discussed ways “to improve relationships and create administrative and operational efficien- cies between organizations.” One way the districts decided to do this was to fill WLAD’s vacant office manager position part time with Brown’s expertise. Langborg and Burright looked at the following goals when making their decision: to save taxpayer money; find additional ways to create administra- tive efficiencies between the two districts; strength- en the relationship between the organizations; and reduce redundancies within both districts. Ultimately, they also hope to save staff time. Langborg said, “We came up with something we could all agree with. We understand that both districts and boards could be concerned, since she is an employee of both districts, with making sure we get equal value.” See DISTRICTS 8A NOTICE EARLY DEADLINES FOR THANKSGIVING WEEK INSIDE Siuslaw News is joining other area busi- nesses by being closed Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 26.
