Second-prize winner was Kashni Kalra from Siuslaw High School. In his winning speech, Dewberry discussed the impor- tance of recognizing un-sung heroes and how it holds up to the 4-Way Test. Kashni, an exchange stu- dent, discussed immersion in a culture. The contest was held on WEDNESDAY THUIRSDAY Monday, April 13, at the Florence Event Center. The winners were congratulated and presented their prizes at the Rotary meeting on April 28. Dewberry received a check for $500 and Kashni a check for $350. The students also gave their prize-win- ning speech to Rotary mem- bers. In addition to developing their own ideas for interest- ing speeches, the contestants also had to be sure that their speech topics were subject to the Rotary 4-Way Test: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? The judges and timing procedures for the Speech Contest were provided by volunteers from the Florence Rotary Club and the Siuslaw Talespinners Toastmasters Club. On Saturday, May 9, Dewberry will represent Florence in the finals at the District 5110 Speech Contest in Eugene.
