Veterans of Foreign Wars award honors local emergency responders
National Police Week began
in 1962, when President John
F. Kennedy designated May 15
as Peace Officers Memorial
Day. Since then, it has evolved
into an entire week to honor
those in law enforcement who
have given their life in the line
of duty.
Today, the event draws
upwards of 40,000 attendees
at the U.S. Capitol in
Washington, D.C.

Dewberry wins Rotary Speech Contest
Andrew Dewberry, a local
home-schooled sophomore,
won first prize at the local 4-
Way Test Speech Contest,
sponsored by the Rotary Club
of Florence.
Second-prize winner was
Kashni Kalra from Siuslaw
High School.
In his winning speech,
Dewberry discussed the impor-
tance of recognizing un-sung
heroes and how it holds up to
the 4-Way Test.
Kashni, an exchange stu-
dent, discussed immersion in a
culture.
The contest was held on
WEDNESDAY THUIRSDAY
Monday, April 13, at the
Florence Event Center. The
winners were congratulated
and presented their prizes at
the Rotary meeting on April
28.
Dewberry received a
check for $500 and Kashni a
check for $350. The students
also gave their prize-win-
ning speech to Rotary mem-
bers.
In addition to developing
their own ideas for interest-
ing speeches, the contestants
also had to be sure that their
speech topics were subject
to the Rotary 4-Way Test:
Is it the truth?
Is it fair to all concerned?
Will it build goodwill and
better friendships?
Will it be beneficial to all
concerned?
The judges and timing
procedures for the Speech
Contest were provided by
volunteers from the Florence
Rotary Club and the Siuslaw
Talespinners Toastmasters
Club.
On Saturday, May 9,
Dewberry will represent
Florence in the finals at the
District

Part of protecting your automobile investment is finding an auto
repair shop you can trust. A trustworthy mechanic whom you're
comfortable with can ease any concerns you have when taking
the car in for maintenance, whether that maintenance is a
routine tuneup or more extensive repairs. Though mechanics
differ greatly, find one you can trust and one who knows your
car.
