Schmidt has an extensive background in indoor and outdoor gardening and also in landscape design, installa- tion and maintenance. Schmidt’s local business, at 375 Laurel St. in Florence, specializes in providing organic gardening supplies (nutrients, potting soil, certi- fied pesticides), hydroponics and aeration equipment, propagation materials and equipment for lighting and water delivery. He is a resource for customers because of his vast knowledge of gardening and landscaping. He also shares his gardening expertise with the community on KXCR Radio with the “Greenman Report” on the “Talk Back with Jack” show. Come and learn about all the areas of medical cannabis (marijuana) cultivation. This includes details of the cannabis life cycle, soil requirements, light, nutrients and water requirements, special equip- ment and the curing process. The lecture will focus on the needs of individual growers (people with a medical marijuana card) rather than commercial opera- tions. Florence Herb Enthusiasts members explore, exp- erience and learn about the culinary, craft and medicinal uses of herbs at monthly meetings and special events. For more information, call Robert McGlauflin at 541-513- 1745. This month’s meeting is at 11 a.m., March 19, at New Life Lutheran Church, 2100 Spruce St. in Florence. Guest are welcome to attend their first meeting free; annual dues are $10. Gardening is a great way for youth to learn how to grow food and other plants. There also are other learning opportunities in gardening, such as math, science of bugs and soil, writing, social studies and stress relief. Through the experience of gardening, students will learn to be good stewards of the land.
