Cany yeaaa ago a yoong man made hit appearance in Stratford, and pent a Uw weeks at a tarern which then existed to afford shelter to stage- coach travelers.. Whence be came and What (hit business was none could guess. Directly i opposite tbe tavern stood the email cottage end torgeor a blacksmith named Folsom. He bad a daortKer who was tbe beanty of tbe Tillage, and it was ber fortune to cap Urate the heart of the yonog stranger. He told her bit lore, said be was from Scotland, tb'be wat traeeliog incog. , . hp VlO-f" Jldence jaa her hit real tame, claimlnsr be wat an heir to a lareo fortaee. - fibe returned hie lore and they were married. A tew weeke thereafter tbe itranger told bit wife that be must visit New Orleans he did to. and tbe sroaaip of tbe town made the wife unhappy by diaagreea. hie bints and Jeer. In a few months the husband returned, bat before a - week bad elapsed he receired a large budget of letters, and told hit wife be bast at once ge to England, and most ge alone. Be took: nit departure and tbe gottipt had anotber -glorious op- portntiiy te make a confiding woman wretched. To all bnt herself it wat a clear ease of desertion the wife be came mother, and for two years lived J in silence aad hope. At the end of that time a letter waa received : by the Straitor 4 beauty from her hatband, directing her to get at once to Nei York with her child, taking nothing with her hat the clothes tbe wore, and embark in a tblp for home in England. On her arrival in New York tbe found tbip splendidly famished, with every eonveateace aad luxury for ber com fort aad two servants ready to obey very with the might express. The skip duly arrired la England, and tbe Stratford girl became tbe mistress of a nperb mansion, and at the wife of a baronet wat tainted by the aristocracy , as , Lady Samuel Sterling. Oa tbe death of tbe husband tbe Stratford boy tacoeedtd to the title and wealth of hie father, aad in tbe laat 'edition of " Peerage and Baronetage" he it I po kes of as tbe issue of " Mitt Folsom, of Stratford, North America." Iron and Its Manufacture. A. rery able addreM wai delivered nt tit 'American iDstittste by" A.' ; W. Humphreys, upon "Iron and ita Manu facture in America." Mr. Humphrey! tketcbed at length the early methods employed ia work insr iron, until be came down to the eitabliibmea of the first known iron work on tail continent, at Jamestown, Virginia, 1615. The first well estab lished forget "t Braintree, Mass. From 1836 dales the employment of anthracite coalynr smeltioa; iron in the 3 T-;-A Ctt. The uror!nclinn nf thia v u, v. 1 T description of mon reai hed, in 1869, 971.000 tons. V In 184U not a rail was rolled io.tbe United States Skeel was oniy made at irreat cost by thk slow old-time pro- eeas. Darid Hi i is said to bave been the first to u In 1345; be was d bitaminom coal en to tje necevsi by a strike amoog ty of the experimen hia workmen. He t reby opened tbe door to toe mannfi tare of B50.000 tone of metal in 18691 Since 1840 tbe blast bat been madelhotter, even to 1,000 or more degree This is done by two methods ; one by a special combustion chamber of iron pipes ; anotber is by a heated brick-work chamber. By tbe use of eellulur stoves, etc., the blast can bo raised to 1,400 degrees. An unexplained advantage of the heated blast is thus shown : If tbe air supplied to a cocoas a labara tory blow pipe be beated to tay 500 degrees, many substances previously infusible to tbe ordinary blow-pipe flame are readily melted. Tbe use of the. hot blast bas enabled many ores to be profitably smelted that were previ ouslv worthless. Tbe inferiority of iron sometimes made by tbe pot blast bas been charged upon the heated air, but that bas not been verified as a fact The complete closing of the tope .of '.he furnaces is a great improTemea,t with the most of ores: where a flame is visible at tbe tunnel bead, we may be sure that there it tome waste. Tbe combinations of improvements (re viewer at lengm; eiuce ioiu resuna iu the production Of 700 tons .per week, at one furnace, in 18b0 more than doable the quantity that all Great Britain made ia 1740, by tbe use of less tban a ton of coal to a ton of iron Tbe total quantity of pig iron made in the United States in 1809 bad a great er value in this crude state, at average prices, tban all tbe gold and silver produced in tbe same period, by some $5,000,000. Tbe rapid growth of Troy, Pittsburg, Cleveland , t. Louis and their suburbs indicates tbe profitable result of the development of our vast mineral resources. Tbe first rail was rolled in 1843. Last jear 600,000 tons were made more than hair In fennsyl Tama, tbe rest in New York, Troy, Rome, Syracuse, Elmira and Buffalo Most of tbese were of superior quality to those imported. Tbe supply of ore is inexhaustible. With patient indus try and energy we may finally achieve the success, which as thorough Amen cane, ao lets tban enthusiastic iron masters, w aie working tor, and be able to profitably supply net only the heaviest demands of tbe home market, but aim tbe reverse of our present position, aod export instead of import this really precious metal. A bo tit Marrjlng too Young Mrs. Elizabeth Cady Stanton say " Girls do not reacb tueir maturity un til 25, vec at !' tbey are witcs and mothers all over tbe land, robbed of all tte rights aod trredom of child hood id marriage, cribid in growth and development: tbe vital forces needed to build wF'a vigorous and healthy womanhood are sapped and pervrrted from their legitimate cban nelt in the premature trace of tepro duction. When tbe body it overtaxed, the snind looses Its tone and settles down ia gloomy discontent that en feebles tbe whole mortal being. Tbe feeble another brings forth feeble toot, the aad mother tboae with morbid ap petites. Tbe constant demand of sum ulants amoog men it tbe retuit or the morbM conditions of their mothers Healtby, happy, vigorous womanhood would co more for the cause! of tern peraoce tban any prohibitory or license lawa possibly can. When woman, by tbe observance of the laws of life and health, it restored to ber normal con ditioo, maternity will not be a period of weakneat, " but of added power With that high preparation of body aad teal to which I have referred, men and women of tonnd mind and body drawn together by true sentiments of affcv.S!i, uugc.t calculate with certain ty on a happy borne, witn nealtby children gathering round their fireside To this end let girlhood be scarcely devoted to education, to mental, moral and physical growth, to aa high prepa ration for personal independence and ambition as boybood is to-day ; re membering tbat girls, as well as boys, were created primarily for their own enjoyment, ana secoodarily to serve each other; Reproduction in tbe nor mal condition of woman will not be a period of suffering, but of joy and thanksgiving. One of tbe saddest fea tures ef woman t present condition is ber idea tbat she is cursed of heaven in her motherhood ; that it is one of nature's necessities that she should suffer through the period of maternity. It it because we ignorantly violate so many laws of our being tbat it is so to-day." As Isax.Niots Doiiaa. Well, three men suddenly rushed forward, deter mined, as tbey swore with a dreadful imprecation, to have tbe money or tbe lives of the travelers. ' Spare our lives, take all I bave, taid one, "bere it is," offering a band ful of silver; "bet my eompamoo bas a larger sum bid away in bts left boot. "Traitor 1 " exclaimed the other, while tbe highwaymen, with blackened faces end cocked pistols proceeded to take off bis boots. ''If you bave spoken false," shouted one of the marauders," I'll give you an ounce of lead for your pains. "He's tpoken tbe trntb." responded the searcher. "Here s a prizel a bun dred pounds in Bank . of England notes." Securing tbe prise, the two travelers were blindfolded, and bound to tbe finger-post, while tbe horse was taken out of the gig, and turned loose upon the common. It was ao hour bvtore tbey were released from their position, during which period tbe ill-nsed victim vented bis imprecations pretty loudly. Upon reaching tbe next town, where a deposition was made before the mag istrate, tbe worthy Justice commented, in rather a severe strain, upon the base conduct of the wretch who 'could act to treacherous a part. 'Hear my palliation," meekly said tbe accused , . "Ob, stand down," responded the man in authority. 'One word," continued tbe other, my object ia tbe declaration I made was not to screen myself at another's expenie. " I" knew that my companion had a hundred pounds hid in hit boot. I bad twelve hundred pounds in my waist-band. Had I been searched, tbat sum must' bave been discovered. I thought better to sacrifice tbe smaller to the larger turn... I now return tbe money I was tbe means of bis , being deprived, of, and, ia future, I would recommend him to be more prudent in keeping bis own counsel." A Faib Bit. Two wags, passing oot cf town on the Galveston road, says the Kansas Tribune, were struck with tbe beau lie of Lawrence. - "Whose place is that?' said one of tbem. "Tbat If tbe lordly residence of Major-Gee. A. Reynolds. Cost $30,000." "What ia his basisess?" " "Indian Agent." ; "What ia bis salary, and how long baa he held bis office?" "Two years, at $1,500 a year." 'Lord, wbat did tbe boneat fellow do with tbe rest of bis salary ?' "Started bis brother and two other honest men in the newspaper business to denonnce corruption." Prince Salm-Salm was killed at tbe storming of St, PriTet. He waa lead ing hia battalion against tbe walls of tbe fort wbeo.bia right upper arm waa battered by a bullet. He raised tbe word which bad fallen from bis band with hie left, aod sped on. Anotber bullet bit the same arm ; be eared not for it, till a bullet bit bim fatally in tbe body, " Haye we triumphed ?" be asked a clergyman standing by 'bis bedside. " Yes.'' " Then all it well! Comfort my wife !" Those were tbe last words that fell from bis lips. ' Tbe B affalc Exprem thinks that the proepective struggle : between tbe Schutso Brown party in Missouri and the Administration of President Graut it not in a very promising thape. " Tbe fact ie," tays tbe Ezprr; " tbat Senator Scburz and party are taga cioas enoagb to see that there eaa be practically no issue between them and the Admtaistrauon, unless tbey make complete eurreoder to the Democracy. The Prewdrsot would never bare taken issue with them if tbey bad carried oa their extorts for enfranchisement in Missouri inside the party. Tbe PreVt it bimself committed to such a policy, and bis difference with tbe Missouri bolters was tbat they sought to disrupt the party in order to carry their policy, instead of seeking to control tbe poli cy of the party by remaining with it. Now that they bave carried their point, tbey find tbat, so far as tbeir political strength is concerned, tney navo thrown away the meat and kept tbe bone. The Administration cheerfully acaoiesces in enfranchisement in Mis souri, though it may not applaud tbe the means whereby it waa secureu. Tbe disaffected bave no strength ot themselves and nothing to stand on outside ot tbe Republican party, and must naturally gravitate back to a po sition of fealty in order to sustain themselves and be supported in hold ing on to what little tbe recent cam naiirn in Missouri bas left tbem ia possession of." Fwi HobsS9 fob OBfooit. Tbe Chico (Cal.) Enterprise, of Dec. 30lb, says : Our attention was called to some fine atock which bad arrived on Wed nesday evening at Weed & Waste's liverr stable, consisting of four fine Norman horses and mares brought from Marysvilla, Ohio, by W. C. Mjer, of Ashland Mills, Oragon. His fine Norman stallion. imDorted front Havre, France, last August, waa selected as bis choice from amooe; sevnteta im sorted Norman stallions he bad looked at in Illinois ana unto, ana oe r con sidered by tbe most competent judges as among the very fioest speci mens ot tots celcoratea biock si Dorses, also, a full-blooded Norman mare from Sanclair. which has for three successive Tears taken tbe first pre mi urn at tbe Ohio State Fair, aad ber colts bave taken premiums at all tbe fairs tbey bare been exhibited. It is aid by well informed borte sws, teat there are but three full blood snares of tbis stock in the United States, and this is one of tbem. He also purchas ed two three-quarters Normal mares one from J. R. Boerger, and one from J. Leonard which are pronounc ed tbe best specimens of tbis atock in tbe country. These are with foal, by Imported Clydesdales, and tbe firet, by Norman Prince Albert. We bave known Mr. Myer for many years, and he bas made fine stock a speciality. Tbe present enterprise will east bins in tbe neighborhood of $8,OG6. A Rkoimint or Amazo9j The I.00- don Daily Neica expresses tbe belief tbat tbe female citizen of Far is are apparently weary of the monotony ef a besieged existence. They are so b at ing in a body called "AmazoDS of tbe Seine." Tbeir costume will coaeisi ef a pair of black trousers, with M or ange colored stripe, a blouse or wool en stuu, with a cap, and a black acoi with an orange band, together witb a cartridge box fastening to a sbaalder belt. Only women of unexceptiona ble character will be permitted to join tbis accompanied by- busbaod, father or brother, but to bring with tbem a certificate from tbe Commisaary ef Police, attesting tbeir character, posi tion, etc. Tbe o Ulcers will all be la dies, mostly wives and daughters of officers of tbe army, or at any rate possessing some knowledge of military affairs. A special patriotic and most spirit stirring song bas been composed for tbe corps entitled "Tbe Marseillaise of tbe Amazons of tbe Seine." Iu addition to tending the wounded tbey are expected to defend tbe ramparts and barricades jointly with the sta tionary National Guard, and to "ren der the combatants, in wbese ranks tbey would be distributed by compa nies, all such domestic and fraternal services as are compatible with mortal order and military discipline." Tbe Herald of Dec. 15th, says s Tbe Ori flamme, which waa to bare sailed last Thursday, was delayed until Monday The purpose of tbis was to enable Mr nowaday to perfect negotiations which were then pending with tbe leading capitalists of tbe old West side Com pany. Tbis was effected. Tbe ar rangement made between tbe high con tracting parties, as we learn it, is to the efl'ert that Holladay pays all tbe outstanding debts of the old company, and asjumes all its assets, together with all those valuable blocks of land ia the northern part of the city, now in the name of S. Q. Reed. Thus it would seem tbat Mr. Holladay bas made a very good bargain, as those blocks alone in tbe northern part of tbe city are to-day worth more tban tbe outstanding liabilities. Besides tbis, be gets the road bed, already se cored, and tbe grading already done for abont twenty miles. A queer family of predatory people are encamped at Cook s Urove, in Huntington, Mass., and are objects of much curiosity. Tbe men bave 1 singular breed of dogs which tbey sell and tbe women sit silently before tents daring tbe moonlight evenings and only speak to tell your fortune if yon desire it. They are unlike regular English gipsies tbeir faces are fairer tut tbe same cratt is In tbeir dealings, and villagers look to their bolts and bars well nightly. Tbey claim to bave come from Spain, and to be of "pure blood," tut nothing seems to show it unless it be tbeir dogs. I New Lioht II0C8B. Tbe tower is tfty feet high the dome of tbe lantern being red, tbe other parts white a ie about ZOO yards from tbe western extremity of the Cape. Tbe light is elevated 258 feet above tbe main level of tbe sea, illuminating an area of 140 degrees of the horizon, and can be seen in an ordinary atmosphere, from the deck of a ship fifteen feet above tbe water, at a distance of nealrly twenty four nautical miles. A Texas octogenarian says, from first to last he bas received from tbe accidental discbarges of guns and pis tols into bis body one hundred and seventj-five shots ; has both legs, col larbone and seven ribs broken, and hi skull cracked ; is the father of twenty children ; raised this year, with bi own hands, eleven hundred bead of cabbage, . four thousand large beets besides other " crops, and can now run a pretty good quarter-race. An exchange , girea tbe information that in tbe United States just no there are twenty-seven young women atndying theology, with a view to be coming preachers; nineteen are lludj tdg law, and sixty-seven are studying medicine. Tfiese are hardly accurate. Over half tbe number of women given are studying medicioe at tbe three medical colleges o,ien to tbem in New York besides others at tbe colleges in Philadelphia, Cleveland, Chicago and Cincinnati. A foot-race took place November 25th between Lieutensnti Tucker and Strigbt, of ber Majesty's ship Scylla, for $200 a side,, from Victoria to Egqnimalt, a distance of about tbree miles. Strigbt allowed Tucker a start of one quarter of a mile. Tbe race was won by Stright after a close con test. Time, 20 min. 54 sec. It is estimated that at one fourth ounce to each letter, tbe weight of just 50,000 letters in . tbat balloon from Metz, captured at Neufchatel, would be 781 pounds avoirdupois, wherefore the story is discredited.
