by two methods ; one by a special
combustion chamber of iron pipes ;
anotber is by a heated brick-work
chamber. By tbe use of eellulur stoves,
etc., the blast can bo raised to 1,400
degrees. An unexplained advantage
of the heated blast is thus shown : If
tbe air supplied to a cocoas a labara
tory blow pipe be beated to tay 500
degrees, many substances previously
infusible to tbe ordinary blow-pipe
flame are readily melted. Tbe use of
the. hot blast bas enabled many ores to
be profitably smelted that were previ

iron sometimes made by tbe pot blast

bone. The Administration cheerfully
acaoiesces in enfranchisement in Mis
souri, though it may not applaud tbe
the means whereby it waa secureu.

themselves and nothing to stand on

must naturally gravitate back to a po
sition of fealty in order to sustain
themselves and be supported in hold

Imported Clydesdales, and tbe firet, by
Norman Prince Albert. We bave
known Mr. Myer for many years, and
he bas made fine stock a speciality.

are expected to defend tbe ramparts
and barricades jointly with the sta
tionary National Guard, and to "ren
der the combatants, in wbese ranks

nies, all such domestic and fraternal
services as are compatible with mortal
order and military discipline."

The purpose of tbis was to enable Mr
nowaday to perfect negotiations which
were then pending with tbe leading
capitalists of tbe old West side Com
pany. Tbis was effected. Tbe ar
rangement made between tbe high con
tracting parties, as we learn it, is to
the efl'ert that Holladay pays all tbe
outstanding debts of the old company,
and asjumes all its assets, together
with all those valuable blocks of land
ia the northern part of the city, now
in the name of S. Q. Reed. Thus it
would seem tbat Mr. Holladay bas
made a very good bargain, as those
blocks alone in tbe northern part of
tbe city are to-day worth more tban
tbe outstanding liabilities. Besides
tbis, be gets the road bed, already se
cored, and tbe grading already done
for abont twenty miles.
A queer family of predatory people
are encamped at Cook s Urove, in
Huntington, Mass., and are objects of
much curiosity. Tbe men bave 1
singular breed of dogs which tbey sell
and tbe women sit silently before tents
daring tbe moonlight evenings and
only speak to tell your fortune if yon
desire it. They are unlike regular
English gipsies tbeir faces are fairer
tut tbe same cratt is In tbeir dealings,
and villagers look to their bolts and
bars well nightly. Tbey claim to bave
come from Spain, and to be of "pure
blood," tut nothing seems to show it
unless it be tbeir dogs.

bouse bas been erected on Cape Blanco
on the Uregoo coast. . Tbe tower is
tfty feet high the dome of tbe lantern
being red, tbe other parts white a
ie about ZOO yards from tbe western
extremity of the Cape. Tbe light is
elevated 258 feet above tbe main level
of tbe sea, illuminating an area of 140
degrees of the horizon, and can be seen
in an ordinary atmosphere, from the
deck of a ship fifteen feet above tbe
water, at a distance of nealrly twenty
four nautical miles. Herald.
A Texas octogenarian says, from
first to last he bas received from tbe
accidental discbarges of guns and pis
tols into bis body one hundred and
seventj-five shots ; has both legs, col
larbone and seven ribs broken, and hi
skull cracked ; is the father of twenty
children ; raised this year, with bi
own hands, eleven hundred bead of

A foot-race took place November
25th between Lieutensnti Tucker and
Strigbt, of ber Majesty's ship Scylla,
for $200 a side,, from Victoria to
Egqnimalt, a distance of about tbree
miles. Strigbt allowed Tucker a start
of one quarter of a mile. Tbe race
was won by Stright after a close con
test. Time, 20 min. 54 sec.
It is estimated that at one fourth
ounce to each letter, tbe weight of just
50,000 letters in . tbat balloon from
Metz, captured at Neufchatel, would
be 781 pounds avoirdupois, wherefore
the story is discredited.
