- Last week the much contested Nevil
road was finally ordered to be opened, oa
payment of the assessed damage. The
case has been appealed.
Portlanders congratulate themselves on
having bad no fire alarm for two weeks.
We bare bad none for that many months.
We saw a wagon load of eggs brought
to towo yesterday in the patent eg pack
er, which is a set of pasteboard boxes
on-j for each egg. Tbey are surely safe
from ordinary breakage.
As short lime on the stage route is fully
established, mails for the north now close
at 5 a.m., and forthe south at 3 p. m.
The University scholars are to have a
nicnic up the river on Saturday next.

distance of one thousand miles of a rail

Great Sali or Lasd. We learn from
Jo Teal, Esq., who came down tbe river
yesterday, that he and B. Goldsmith have
completed tbe purchase of eight tracts of
land, with improvements, lying about
twenty miles east of Harris burg, in Linn
county, containing in all about six thou
sand acres. The prices ranged from four
to twenty dollars per acre, according to
situation, and tbe whole, purchase com
bines the best of prairie and bill land,
watered excellently. The intention is to
raise fine stock upon it, and with the
means at tbeir command, we may expect
that in time this tract will be known as
one of the great stock farms of the United
States. -
Still Asothsb. C. Beal, G. W. C. T.,
of Oregon, seems to be doiog a land of
fice business in his work. On the 2d of

being dismasted with tbe prospects there

which, in tbeir opinion, viewed by the
light of experience, is good 'enough for

more reliable than California. Old Capt.
English has remained at San Diego, where
be has acquired property and is doing
well.
To Liati Us. Mr. Thomas Cross
tarts this morning for the East. We
learn that he will visit Chicago aad thinks
of engaging ia pork packing in that city,
shoald the' prospects seem' favorable.
, r Mr. Cross has won the, reputation of be-
lng thetnost successful packer on the
Pacific coast and thinks that in the East,
among heavy operators, he will find a
- better field for his specialty, which is tha
preparation of fancy hams. Should he
engage ia busings there, be will confine
himself to this particular branch of bus
iness. While we are confident tbat Mr.
Cross will succeed ia business any where
we feel tbat Oreeoa can ill afford to lose
such men and trust tbat bis long resi
dence in Web-foot will make it impossible
for him to stay away.

another toward Portland. Several miles
of each have beea constructed this sum
mer by the little community that is cat
off from the rest of the world by the
Coast Range. Tbey ask that Congress
make a grant' of lands through .which
the road passes in aid of tbe undertaking
Certainly no caBe shows more clearly
good reason for such a request. HFhe
proposed road lies through a region
mountainous country for thirty miles,
where the land can never be made to yield
tie Government a dolIar,unIessitia open
ed by means of a road. It is not worth
much ihere, bat will at a future day be
of loot importance as timber land.
Some occasional tracts may be atiilized
immediately, and tbe prospect of future
usefulness of tbe remainder woald add
sufficient to tbe financial credit of enter
prise to make it a success; Thus by do
nating one-half of a strip of land, now of
no use at all, the other half will be
made valuable, and a section of country
now undeveloped will be aided ia making
itself a prominent feature in tbe indue
trial economy of our Stan. A former
Legislature memorialised Congress on
this subject, and we hope to see tbe next
one tke such steps as will result in
something being done for that county.

that he has laid a wager with a candidate
for a county office on tbe Democratic
ticket, and the sum of one hundred do!

that every nominee on tbe Democratic
State ticket will be elected, and our

Appointed. Mr. J. Henry Brown bas
been appointed Assistant Marshal to take
the census for tbe County of Marion, by
U. S. Marsha! Thos. G. Young. The ap
pointment is a good one, and we have no
doubt of tbe duties of tbe office being
faithfully disharged.
Bill Towib. Workmen are engaged
in erecting a bell tower above the Baptist
Church of this place. The bell which
has been hung near the ground on frames,
will soon be in a position to send its tones
farther and clearer than in its present
situation.

Tis Toss. Toe Fannie Tatton brought
dawa tbe river yesterday ten tons of
poultry. There were twelve large coops,
measuring tbe above amount. Ten of
tbem were well filled with fowls ; tbe
other two with geese. It wis impossible
to count them, so we ascertained the
measurement. -
Issahe. Mr. Wm. Curtis, of Benton
county, goes down on tbe boat to day,
conveying a brother of his to tbe Insane
Asylum at East Portland. Tbe unfortun
ate man has been deranged, and his rela
tives near Corvallis have been keeping
him for the last six months, in hopes of
bis recovery, but at last bave been obliged
to give it op.
Hand Mashed. A young man named
Newell, son of Mr. Newell of tbe Stand
ard Mills, who is a miller at tbe Silver
ton Mills, had bis right band badly masa
ed yesterday, wbile oiling machinery. It
was caught between an iron wbeel and
tbe timbers, and. tbe flesb torn from each
side. He was abouttbe mill superintend
ing matters afterwards, but evidently has
a bad band that it will take some time to
cure np.
Fob Ashlahd. Cspt. 0. C. Applegate

He bas been ia Salem since last Summer,
an invalid oa account of the unfortunate
results of vaccination with impure matter.
Bis arm, which has caused him a great
deal of Buffering, bas so far recovered as
to permit bim to travel, though it is still
necessary to keep it in a sling. While be
must even remember the past Winter as
unpleasant from this net, we still hope
tbat tbe memories of many pleasant ac
quaintances and true friends found, will
in some measure maae amenas.
Fob the Pihitintiabt. Sheriff Thornp
on, of Umatilla county, arrived by boat
yesterday, having in charge five prisoners
sentenced to tbe Penitentiary. Three of
these go for three years each, having been
convicted of larceny, ia stealing sixty
head of horses from tbe UmatilU Reser
vation. Another gets ooe year for bur
glary, and an Indian goes for one year
for stealing cattle. I ney were put oa a
'bus and taken direct to tbe Penitentiary,
where tbev will no doubt be speedily in
ducted into the mysteries and miseries of
brickmaking.
Peshatcbi Explcsios. Mr. L.
who was at work in the . South Salem
Quarry, was badly hurt aboot tbe bands
and arms yesterday by a premature explo
sion of a blast. It seems he was eagaged
in tamping a charge when, by some acci
dent, tbe-fuse ignited. His hands were
powder-burnt and also received several
hurts from tbe splinters of stone, many
of which lodged in his hands and arms.
Tbis is tbe second occurence of the kind
lately. There must be aomething wrong
abt-ut the arrangements.
Sthasgi. While seated at oar desk
yesterday writing, we observed that the
glass chimney of a lamp which had beea
ased the eveaing before, was cracking
and snapping at a lively rate. Tbe lamp
was in its nsual position and certainly
bad not been touched for aa hour. The
snapping continued nntil tbe chimnev
naa spontaneously resoivea itself into a
total wreck. If any one can explaia this,
it may be tbe means of quite a savin ir to
the whole community ia tbe item of lamp
chimneys, ouca occurrences may be
known to others but this is the first we
aver saw or beard or.

Wilcome. Oiegon needs more than
anything else an addition of good men
and women, and we are glad to see tbat
every steamer from San Francisco brings
an installment of just such people. Sev
eral families from the East arrived by
boat yesterday. Some went on up tbe
river, but the greater part were destined
for Marion county, and tbev are welcome
here.
At thb Sociable. The supper and So
ciable at tbe Legislative Hall was so
pleasant an affair that it did not break up
nntil nearly 12 o'clock. The arrange
menu were perfect, tbe attendance just
large enough for comfort, tbe supper
bounteous, and the next day's luncb was
about $125 of receipts. From tbe surplus
provisions a nice lunch was set out veS'
terday, and several of tbe finest cakes
were sold.
Arrived. Mr. C. E. Burro vjs, of Santa
Cruz, who, with D. Tuthill and others,
has contracted to supply tbe city with
gaslight, arrived by stage yesterday
Some of the machinery shipped from New
York bas already reached here, and the
remainder will soon be on band. The
contractors' will commence work jmme
diately, and intend to redeem their prom
ise and light the city with gas next win
ter.
A Lost Canary. Mr. Hellenbrand of
the Commercial Restaurant, had a canary
escape from a cage bung ia part of bis
restaurant, yesterday, and will suitably
reward any person who will recover aod
return it. It is a male bird. Bright jel
low and a good singer.

ware factory to its fullest capacity. They
bave on hand a large assortment of the
finest flower-pots ever manufactured on
the Pacific coast; also a large assortment

bert & Parrisb, having just returned from
tbe upper part of the valley, where they
sold a wbole wagon load of candies and
segars. Send the team out Monday to
visit Marion, Clackamas, lambill, and

terprising firm and tbeir goods are of tbe
best quality.
Something Niw. Mr. Montgomery
yesterday showed us a little instrument
that he has lately received, by means of
which be takes auy required number of
ambrotypes at one setting. It is called a
multiplying camera, and tbe pictures
wbeo set in cards suitable for albums
are well named "gems." Mr. M. wanted
to test the power of bis camera, so he
persuaded yours truly to sit in range

one plate. It didn't break the glass, so
he thinks it a good one.
Bad Mahagemsxt. A comber of per
sons were disappointed by tbe hasty ad
journment of tbe Temperance meeting on
Tuesday evening. The majority of those
who attend thinking the meeting
would commence as late as usual,
arrived tbere in time to find tbe doors
closed. Those who were punctual had
other appointments, and a motion to ad
journ was tbe first business transacted
Mr. O. C. Applegate, who had been in
vited to deliver a poem, reached the door,
manuscript in hand, just in time to bear
tbe result of tbe vote announced. The
members of tbe Musical Union came soon
after, aod others continued to arrived for
an hour. Gentlemen wbo sat on tbe
steps talking, inform as that as many as
one hundred persons came to tbe door
while tbey were there. lours truly bad
been very busy and reached tbere about
9 o'clock too late. It is a pity tbat the
business on band could not have been at
tended to, but on tbe next meeting night
members will probably be more punctual.
We should like to see tbe meeting called
to order at tbe precise moment, whether
aoy one was present or not.
