The p per since know at Grover's Organ Wei chartered fot be campaign by ao asso ciation wfcro became responsible for the expense Bush and Watkinds were seen la tbe preliminary arrangement!, as we were assured by a leading Democrat John Fvklller declared to several, loci Mentally tr positively, that be shoaldeoo -Xroljitscolurans.and probably many others WXre Interested to the extent of aiding to subsidise and maintain tbe paper. So much for tbe parentage of the sheet that baa become infain-oua for Us vileness aod obscenity. Its course is so utterly re&less emd d-eptaved that its only in- ftuenee is to -dlsgast the honest portion of tbe Democratic party and strengthen Br publican arguments, and it only e&IU for .notice at our bands as representing tbe interests of L. F. Grover, and" we shall ever hold bim to a strict accountability Tor the falsehoods, slanders and infamies committed by bis "instruments and paid for with bis money. In oroceedintr. to unearth the vermin who barrow in dark places, and from nameless obscurity indite tb libels that make Grover's Organ iofaaaona, we with it to be distinctly QBderetood that they only receive notice, as bis representatives, and because we hold bitn accountable and responsible for Ifaeir acts. They might remain nameless, and rot in the foal atmosphere they have created, only that GroTer own? them and shall answer for them. It seems eowettohrg more (ban a farce to waste wtrds in description and denun ciation of W. H. Watkinds. Some men are born with unscrupulous ability to carry ot any V'n which can be made to pay, and texme the natural instruments of deatcniixr men who nossess as little virtue bat more prudence, than them selves. Eadowed with ho natural love of ' principle, and with abilities unhampered by education and un marred by good as Soclatroas, he became the most avail able candidate for business manager" of the association. Be iajof course, not working without 4is price, and con fidently expects and ncMoubt bas the positive promise that ia case Grover is elected he shall be Superintendent of the Stat Penitentiary, For number of years put Watkinds bas been occupyiqg bis proper field of lab&i in tbe Demo cratic party. Polk coanty bas for many years been subject to bis agency as importer of votes, and - be has sworn to carry it in,. 1870. x Her then we have the most unscru pulous 'man in all this region, a&svcKng forth as the only recognised agent of L. F. Grover in bis absence. We claim that a man is known by bis instruments, and that Grover chose Watkinds to do acd act for bim. j ' Hidden-away in the recesses of some datk den who would be nameless but shall not be so is the poor tool who para graphs the lying infamies that disgrace the civilisation of our city while they aim to defame Grover's political enemies. Ia this desperate stage of tbe fortunes of Democracy, when even honor seems lost by tbe avowal of repudiation, there was need that some fitting instrument, aome lost fool, some spirit'datnoed before ite time, should lift no its voice from the S y ....... -"i,Mt sard.t night, Jo. As one of the attorneys of Beal and Baker ,who were ". tried in the' spring of 1865, for the mur 'der of old man Delaney-, Curl stands b fore the world, his" bands stained with blood-money, and his soul perjured 'by alertious before the Court that he be lieved that bis clients' were innocent -when be knew them guilty and had ia large share of the murdered man's money ia bis pocket. Beale k Baker were banged, for the crime of murder, which they confessed apon tbe gallows, and they charged" that while tbey stole tbe money fronr Delaney, Caton and Curl toU it from them. At the trial we beard this man Curl assert his positive belief in the innocence of bis clients, and he de nounced ana "of oar best citizens, a wit ness for tbe prosecution, as having per jured himself to swear Beale and Baker's lives away. This ha did with tbe knowl- edge of the murder, and after he had un earthed and appropriated the money of whlch tbeyhad robbed Delaney 'a premises. Tbey imparted to him the secret of its hiding, and he, ghoul-fike, unearthed it after night. A certain wealthy man who entrusted tha management of property to them id bis. absence, complains that tbe lame enterprising law firm embexzled from $6,000 to $8,000 of bis money. As tbegentiemaneferredtoiseow in this city and is an active Democrat, we will refer bim to tbe parties to whom he gave tbis information, in cast he shall give it a de nial. At Silvrrton is situated the new flouring mill of Coolidge, Wolford k Co., finished up with all the improvements known in milling. It has two run of stone for manufacture of fine flour, and choppers besfdes. The large and well built granary contains several thousand bushels of wheat, stored to take advant age of the rise in breadstuff's now pro gressing. , Oa the creek below tbe flouring mill, using the water of the creek as motive power, are a planing mill with buzz saws, a sash and door and furniture factory, both owned by Davenpoit, Wolford k Co., two wagon shop, and a carding machine Tbe town has three stores, two saddlers shops, a drag store and a book store with tbe post office. There are several, each, of boot and shoe makers and blacksmiths, a good hotel and several saloons. These constitute a place of considerable import ance. The social character of the place is denoted by a good school bouse. It is one of the best District Schools in the county. Religious- services are held in the old school house, almost every Sab batb. Tbe meeting bouses ot tbeDistrict are at Bethany and Abiqna, two and three miles distant. There is a village of six dwelling bonses, and new bouses and in habitants are, of course, constantly ad ded to the population. Silverton will begone of the most attractive places in the county, when Oregon gets the growth of a few more years. The McMiouville Blade, asks some per tinent questions of W. T. Also information l? wanted as to that gentleman's position on railroads in general and tbe Astoria and-McMinuville Road in particular. Tbe people of that section will no doubt act upon the subject, and tbey want to act understandingly. One thing is certain, tbe course of the Herald on tbe question of railroads, will injure its party in Yam hill and Washington counties as much as one hundred voters. Grqveb's Obgan.X The rest of tbe Democratic party of tbe State, in dis playing the ticket, place the name of tbe Congressional candidate at the head of the list, while the par excellence Grover Organ hoists the ticket with tbe name of Grover first. .We have before called at tention to tbe-fact that the association are running Graver alone; tbe rest may take their cbayreaf the Salem clique sup ports Grovsr and works for him, deter mined' to 'sacrifice any one who comes in bis way. Tbis being so, tbe Democracy of Oregon have our earnest congratula tion i on the barmooy of tbe party and the efficiency of the Salem association. Mors Grekns. There is gome curiosi ty ia tbe Democratic circles to know what Bill Watkinds went bo hurriedly to Portland tor Tuesday. Some say that having exhausted the supply of green at Salem in honor of Slater, and he having trod them under foot afterwards, Bill went down to negotiate for a lot to be sent from California for use when Gro ver speaks.. Others say that bis imports , in Polk county are saearing they mut have money or blood aad be has expedi ted himself in search of catb. Our opinion is that he is searching for both greens and cash as well as for a campaign speller. Wist Sidb Railroad The success cf tbe West-Side Railroad enterprise seems to be guaranteed by the receipt of a telt- gram by its friends in Portland, stating hat the persons representing it East have succeeded in makieg'a purchase of iron and rolling stock for twenty miles of the road. We are ia hopes to bears at no distant day that work is energetically commenced and material on the way. It is an enterprise in which our State ie much interested. We hope tbe road will be speedily pushed up the valley, and that Astoria will be brought into railroad connection with the Willamette Valley. This will be accomplished ia time, and tbe sooner the better. Jcdgs BoiSB. Tbe only time we bad the honor to receive that "consumptive vul tare, Curl," in this office, Judge Boise's name was mentioned, and he astooUhed us by pronounciegbima model Judge, who commanded universal respect. 'Absence, at Utlverton, to attend the public speaking and watch Mr. Slater's improvement in grammar, is the reason we do not give tbe public enemy more particular attention to day. We need bave no anxiety then, on this point, nor the generations wbicb follow ours for maoy centuries to come. Our provision of light and heat is-assured for a future, tbe long duration of wbicb we are quite unable to estimate. Humanity, as compared with the age of the earth, is yet in its most tender infancy. "The pe riod of time during which tbe earth nour ished organized beings," says Professor Helmboltx, is sull very short when compared to tbe period during which it was a molten rock. Bisbof's experiment on basalt appear to prove that, to cool down from 1,000 to 200 degrees centi grade, our earth must have 350,000 years. As to the length of time that has been re quired by the original nebula to condense itseii no tne tortn or our planetary syc tern, it entirely defies our imagination and all conjectures." Whatever tben may be the extent of tbe fraction of time tbat oar world wtllnjoy, ooe thing is certain, namely, tbat it must be counted bv mil lions of years. Put some of the very best whiting on a plate or dish ; dip a piece of flannel into some clean water and squeeze it nearly dry; dip the flannel into the whit ing and apply it to the painted surface, and a little rubbing will instantly re move any dirt or. grease; atter which, wash tbe paint with dean water, rubbiog it dry with a solt rag.
