Jackson Green is fourteen years M, and he lives on Sixth street. Tho other d.iy, while reading a dime novel, his grandfather came in with tho p iper and asked hinipto rea l the President's message. It irritated Jackson to break 01F his story just where tho trapper was goiug to be ' sealped, so ho made up his mind to have revenge on - his grandfather. He took up tho paper and started off as follows: The bu.tiess of tlio Fatent Office shows a steady increase. Since 1S;JG over loo, 000 patents have been issu ed. O nicer !pock, of the station house, "wants it distinctly understood that he is not the Deck '-confined there a few days since as a lunatic. "What!'' exclaimed the old man, "is that in the message?" "Ilight here, every word of it," re ( , plied Jackson. And he continued: The business of the Agricultural Thtroau rapidly growing and the department grounds are being en larged, a:i 1 the highest prize in a Chinese lottery is twenty-nine cents, r.nd the man who draws it has his name in the paper and is looked inion .as a heap of a fellow. "What! what is that?" roared the oilman, "I never heard of such a message as that !" "I can't help it," replied Jackson, "yoa asked me to read tho President's message, and I am reading it." And he went on: Dnring the year 5, 7w3 applicants for array invalid pensions were al lowed at an aggregate annual rate of J?o0,":2, and kerosene oil is the best furniture oil; it cleanses, adds a pol ish and preserves from tho ravages of insects. "Lor' .vve me! but I ridvev heard exclaimed the of tho likes before .old man, "I've read every President's message since Jackson's time, but I iiever saw anything like this!" "Well I didn't write thiessage," replied Jackson, and he eof inned: During the year, 3,2CV14 aei-es of public domain were certified to railroads, against over six million the pro vding year, and you will s ivo money by buying your Christ mas presents ut the brick block, fine toys of every description at reduced prices. "Jackson Green, does that message real that way?" asked the old man. "You don't suppose I'd lie to yon, do you ?" inquired Jackson, putting on an injured look. "Well, it seems singular," mused the old man. "I shouldn't wonder if Grant wa3 tired when bo wrote that." Jackson went on: o There aro 17,020 survivors of the war of 1812 on the pension rolls, at a total annual rate of 61,(VJl,.r20, and still another lot of those 1 felt skirts which go like hot cakes on a cold morning. "Hold on, Jackson stop right there!" said the old man as he rose " up. "You needn't read another word of that message. If Grant thinks U.t can insult tho American people with impunity he'll find him self mistaken. You may throw the 'g. paper in the stove, Jack-soa, and let this be an awful example to you uev tr to take intoxicating drinks." Jackson tossed the paper away and resumed his dime novel, while the old Rent leaned back and pondered on the degredation of inon in high places. TlIE Li VST OF TUE Cor.PXlT-nAGGEIiS. Tho election will dispose of tho carpet-baggers of this State. They will leave the country. I don't mean to say that anybody will be driven out of Alabama, or that any man who is engaged in any legitimate business here, in town or country, will leave because the Conservatives have car ried the State. But there will be no longer any place in this State for the men who came hero bankrupt in purse and in character, and whose only interest in the State during the spA3t six years has been the salaries or tho fees they have received in public ofiieo. Somo of them have ruived considerable sums of money, but Lavo very rarely invested it here, and many are already making their preparations to leave the State.
