"We have it from good authority, that our wagon makers in this city use only the best of Oregon oak, and send tbe refuse to Portland, where tbey realize the first cost of the lumber, and where it is often sold as Eastern oak. Besides, wo are informed that a house in Port land some time ago sent quite a lot of oak lumler to San Francisco, and this same lot was returned to them as Eastern oak, and Mas sold for SSO per thousand. Since that meeting we have inquired into this matter somewhat, and we have thus far failed to Und a single mechanic who does not give Oregon timber the preference over the Eastern. Ship builders have acknowledged long since the superiority of Oregon tim bor. The question of competition is an other matter in which the gentleman referred to i.s sadly in error. That ho can make a similar wagon for the same amount of money, but ho would con sider it an outrage to turm that kind of work out, and regards it but little letter than money thrown away For 110 he will make a wagon which is graded the same as the $110 East ern wagons, while he will obligate himself to keep the wagons in repair for two years. He states that he has made within the past four years one hundred wagons, and that tlie cost of keeping them .all in repairs during that time has not exceeded two dol lars ami a half. He further assures us that it will cost over 20 per year to keep the $00 Eastern wagons in order. This looks as though the matin lecturers could successfully conipeie with Eastern importations, lint the truth of the matter is, that the dealers in these and many other articles which should be made here, are connected with Eastern factories, and they try to discourage home in dustry. There is no man who has any knowledge of the facts in these matters but will sustain us when we say that Oregon can compete in every respect with the East, and make better and more durable work. The only trouble is to create a de mand for the manufactured articles, and if the Eastern trash is once sup planted our manufacturers and me chanics will make it pay, and retain hundreds of thousands of dollars in our State which now go to enrich some other locality. grand tnii ...:n t 1h74 5 V , l?S,,ay evening. The delegates from Linn and Polk counties at once pro tested against receiving the Salem bid oiv the ground that they called for an increase of capital stock; al though it is evident to anv i;einnn r,f the slightest experience in such mat ters, that should the works be locat ed in Albany or any other point, more than C0,000 will be needed to put them into running operation. A iively discussion then took place pro and con, Mr. Howie, of this city, bat tling manfully against the balance of the Board in favor of giving the coupany the benefit of the splendid donation given by the citizens of Sa lem and its vicinitv, amounting, as we are reliably informed, to over 18,000. Mr. Bowie had previously handed Mr. Ilackleman, of Albany, a copy of the head of the subscrip tion list circulated in this county, in order that the subscriptions might be alike. It seems, however, that the Albanians chose to word their's somewhat different, although the ten dencies are precisely the same. This was done without apprizing us of the change. A motion was finally made to ad journ until this morning at eight o'clock, and it still remains to be seen whether or not the Directors, who are sworn to honestly perform their duties, will locate these works iu Albany, and thus deprive the com pany of about $14,000, or whether they will carry out the instructions of the company and locate where the greatest amount in dollars and cents, or realty, is offered. Mr. Bowie has assured the citizens of Marion conn ty that the Board would certainly lo cate. these works wherever the great- AT COST! AT COST!! S.
