The people of interior Oregon now
have a chance to get oat with their
produce and the Deschutes railroad
will lend them the way before snow
falls again.
The Gazette is in, receipt of thp
4Sth annual cata'oue of the Ore
gon State Fair to be held in Salem,
September 13-18. The 1909 meet
ing promises to be the most inter,
eating in the history of the associa
tion. Fifteen thousand dollars will
be given in premiums on livestock,
agricultural and manufactured products.
The advertisement will carry the
familiar oval, with the slogan,
"Oregon is the Place for You," in
large letters, and those at all in
terested are urged tjask for litera
ture and information about Oregon.
The advertisement informs the
reader that railroad rates are the
same to all parts of Oregon from
the East aud Oregon commercial
bodies will be supplied with ad
dresses of all euquirers so that the
whole state may profit by this ad
vertising, although Portland will
bear all the expense. There is
probably no other city in the world
that has done a like thiug.
Conservation is the live topic for
discussion in the new West. It
contemplates the inauguration of
a general campaign for better use
of the gifts of nature. It means a
proper knowledge ot all that con
tributes to the health and comfort
of the human family. It is a ques
tion which must be handled by
practical men engaged in utilizing
the natural resources of land and
sea. The work calls for the com
bined assistance of producer and
consumer to insure protection to
the products of the earth that go
to make up the prosperity of the
Nation. It concerns the happiness
of individuals and the progress of
the whole country.
The quartermaster-general has
issued new specifications for the
cotton uniform of the United States
army. As is well known, the cot
tun service cloth has heretofore
been dyed a yellowish-brown shade,
universally known as khaki. The
new requirements provide a brown
warp and a green filling, producing
thereby an olive tone similar to
the color of the woolen uniform
cloth. The new cloth will be of
lighter weight than the old khaki.

Rhea creek. These propositions
should bd handled by the federal
government or perhaps better by
the state and it is to this end our
ranchers should begin at once to
work.

stingy apportionment of a dry creek.
Give ns more water and it is then
our produce will force its way to
the markets. Give us more water
aud you ill see ocr diversified
farms springing into state fame,
and perhaps national, and, finally,
give ns more water, then Morrow
County on the map and a Greater
Oregon.
