Tbe good roads cenvention to be Leid in Heppner at a future date to be fixd by Juge Scott, presi des) othe state association, should wiob be 3ost sight of by the people of this county. Every resident scad especially the fnrnjers would li benefitted by better roads. "With em ill p-pu!fttion and great ferriiCj covered, the question nat-vj-aUj aiises of what can be ac Ciiiaif!ir?bed against such obstacles with which we are to contend? is exactly what the proposed gwi3 roads convention is called f?r. It is fur the exchange of Ht3ws, as well as the benefits to cr2c? from the kuoweledge to be o&t?3ed from specialists in road eirjg. It is to find what we can V organized eflort. Here in Morrow county, much montj has been spent on the roads with apparently ljut little accom-jtfirtii- towaid the desired result. Iu hs respective communities ranch complaint can be heard. The farmer who ha a bad road over which to lnul his products to market is nskitjg for a better road, tt ji is quite likely that he will -tay RTvay from the good roads ctmveation and do nothing to aid in Lis own behalf. Great FsIIa, Montana, cornea next with CyOOO.OOO pounds to her credit Tn the competition for prizes on grain at the Pendleton fair, the fact that Morrow county carried off almost everything on wheat, barley an! oats meaus more than realized generally, even by our own people. It should be remem bered that we were in competition with Umatilla county, which is without doubt one of tha greatest wheat growing districts in the United States. Morrow county wheat yields are gradually increas ing under better methods of farm ing, me quality is sucn tunc it is much sought after fur milling purposes. School Notes. The fake stove peddleTS ere in the country again. It is the fame old story. Selling cheap wares, dodging taxes and evading Ihe law in relation to peddlers licenses. A couple of these fellows were lined $300 each in Wasco county the other day. May they get the same medicine her?. TLe big crowd and great enthu siasm shown at the meeting Sat urday evening when Sena'or Ful ton addressed the citizens on the political issues, is at least evidence t'bat Morrow county is strong for lafc. The farmers of Morrow county are losing no time in seeding a large acreage of eummerfallow. There is plenty of moisture and grain will m&ka a good growth this fall. Martio, the man who brutally murdered and robbed Nathan Wolff in Portland, has been found guilty of manslaughter. Such a compro mise isjastly meeting with censure. Japan's glid h in J to the Ameri can fleet was the warmest of all. Peace and friendship were eo plain ly etamped on every transaction that the Americms were greatly impressed. Grass is starting on the ranges. I There is plenty of time yet for graes this fall, cons-quently the stockmen are feeling better since I the rain. Are u Only Half Alive? For tbe information of the school officers, teachers, and patrons, a summary of the law will be published soon and distrib uted to tbe clerks for distribution among the people of the respective districts. There is but one truant officer at present inthe county, but he is au:horized to aot in ad districts. It is to be hope i that fe'.v eases will arise under this law in which it may be necessary to have the penalty applied or even an investi gation made by the truant officer. The Sta e University is offering a cor respondence course to teache-s free, ex cept a email fee for postage. Those tak ing the work and passing an examina tion may obtain credit toward a degree at the University. However, the woik is such that mauy will find it advisable to take advantage of tho courses even if they have no thought of obtaining the credit. If you are interested in this line of work, write the county superintend ent. Superintendent Notson visi ed the school at Lexington, Monday. He f und the work moving a'ong smoothly under the management of Principal Wil cox, Pro'. Mcc ormick, an 1 Mis-es Cole and Vaughan. There are classes in ten grades. The s hoolhousa has been re cently painted, and a number of minor improvements have been made on the inside. The school erouods are well kept. After much etfort, a few trees have been induced to grow, and they add materially to the appearance of the ground. It is to be hoped that more trees may be grown upon the grounds within the near future. The siho'd is equipped with good blackboards and plenty of them. The library is nes im iDg pleasing proportions, and it is put to good use. There is an excellent school spirit throughout all the grades. The pupils seem to be very much in earnest in their work. The recitations sIiot careful pr. paration and are n ar ked by thoroughness. The people of the town ore justly proud of their school. The indebtedness on Ihe school build ing will soon be extinguished, aud t lie burden of taxation will be lighter. However, U19 Lexington people have never complained of the school tax. Backed by a tood school sentiment in the community, th?re is every reason to expeot this scho.l to do exc llent work, and turn out some strong students.
