Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Hickok went to Portland yesterday morning. A. W. Goodman who has been on tbe fiick liat for a few days is able to be out again. The Orpheum Theater is a very popular place. The attendance has been tjrod every evening since the theater started. John Parkins atd family who were iu Ihe city several days, started yesterday afterEOon for their home at liitter. E. A. Chapel was in from Hard man, yesterday. Mr. Chapel says that he is making preparations to move to HermistOQ and will prob ably loctite there. The rooms will be fitted up for cilices and will be convenient and de eirable. The editor of tbe Gazette yester day received the sad news of the death of a brother, at a hospital in Slem, Oregon. His death was caused by the accidental discbarge of a bhol gun in the hands of a companion while out hunting. Saturday afternoon a matinee will be given at the Orpheum The ater, at two o'clock. There is an education in moving pictures. They are always pretty to look at and are instructive as well as the most moral amusement to be had. Sun day afternoon at .'5 o'clock the reg ular Sunday performance will be given instead of the evening. C. JI. Hone and wife, I. Adrian Epping and wife, Clay Brock and J. K. McDonald, made up a party of Hood lliver people in an auto mobile tour from Spokane to Hood lliver, which Mopped over Friday nieht in Heppner. The party is traveling in a Koyal Tourist, for which Mr. I?oue is agent, and came thru Pendleton to Pilot Ilock, thence over the Franklin grade. This is the first machine to make this grade and it is indeed a very remarkable feat to take a car weigh ing over two tons down such a grade, as in many places it is twenty-live per cent or more. Subject tonight (Thursday) Tricks of the Devil " The Morrow Warehouse Milling company is shipping iu a quantity of Turkey Red wheat which will be given a trial by some of tbe farmers of this vicinity; Turkey Red wheat is almost a new variety for this county. What little that has been tried has given very sat is factory results. The grain yields well, has short straw and is excellent for milling purposes. A very interesting reception was given at the M., E. church,. South, last Friday evening to Rev. W. A. Orr and his family, who were as signed to this charge for another year. A large audience was pres ent, many members of other churches of the city being present and taking part in the exercises, showing -the high esteem in which the pastor is held in this commun ity. The city council met in regular session Monday evening. ' Mayor Farnsworth and Council men Irwin, Noble, Freeland and Aiken answered to roll call. A new crosswalk across Main street from the Palace hotel to tbe First National bank was ordered. The walk is to be built of stone, imbedded in cement. Lewis Kinney presented his res ignation as city marshal wbichwas accepted. ' ' The sanitary condition of the city was discussed at some length by tbe council. A general cleanup was strongly recommended by the health committee. The usual number of bills were audited. It is common for a man or boy to kill another while hunting, but for a woman hunter to i-hoot a per sou is something new. A Wallowa county woman and her little girl were out hunting grouse, the form er aimed with a shotgun and the latter with a-2-cnIiber riile. They found a grouse and the girl fired t.t it, but missed. Some years ago a Eugene man was struck on the neck by a limb while felling a tree and a large splinter went into the muscles of j his neck.
