D1S The first annual fair for the third Eastern Chegou District, which is now beius called the 4Morrow"-UuatilU district will be held at Pendleton, September 21-29. This fair which is being fostered by state aid with an appropriation cf $1,500 has been taken up at Pendleton, and under the law the county court has the authority to appropriate a sura not exceeding SI, 000, and Umatilla county has taken advantage of the limit. The enterprising business men of Pendleton !mve subscribed 84,000 Trhich will be expended in the undertaking. So far aa this goes, it is all right ior the thriving town of Pemlle-I tin to lot f-r something that will bring business to the town, but this catch word "Alorrow". Umatilla district is a clever ruse 4o work Morrow county for a little fiish jm t to h?lp make the thing 50. It is mighty convenient for Umati'la cointy to Lave Morrow Attached as a tail and we have been waggiug for a long time, but JSlorrow county taxpayers a e getting tired of it. Now with this "district" fair to be held at Pendleton, mind you, Morrow county has been awarded ihe distinction and honor of com ing first. It ia the "Morrow'r HTmatilla district, and this with a littlo tickling from the Pendleton papers has caused the Ileppner Times to fill all over itself in a big boost in the last issue in which this paper is standing right in in the attempted hold up of Morrow county taxpayers for a county appropriation. The Times says: "We believe (hat it is the duty of Morrow county to help the enterprise along for the reason that at some other time we may want Umatilla's assistance in helping our county to hold a fair." In the first place Morrow county is not able to held a creditable and successful fair. Neither is Uma tilla. If we Bhould attempt it we could get no more from Umatilla county than we could get from Multnomah, nor would we be en titled to any more. Vasco county has tried the fair proposition but Wasco coun ty will not attempt it this year, and why? Simply because it cost more than it was worth. Even the state fair at Salem with all the itate to draw frjm, as well as a fat appropriation, has never been a mccess from a financial stand point. If the3e fairs are not successful 5n the countiei in which they have 5een held, how would Morrow county conn out in playing second ddle with Umatilla. The Gazette believes that 90 per sent cf the taxpayers of Morrow tounty are opposed to a county appropriation for a picnic at Pendleton and will not stand for a holdup of this kind w ithout pro test. This ''district" air at Pendleton will help Pendleton and Pendleton nly. The subscribing of $4,000 tor the enterprise by Tendleton Business men 13 certainly com aaendable. This Fpirit ia what iiakes Pendleton one of the beet towns in the state, but if we have any money to spend in this line let us get up a good street fair or agricultural picnic in Ileppner and then we ciu send the Times over la Umatilla county and get all lindaof money and help for as the Times says this would be a "joint" enterprise. per gallon on the prica of gasoline has aroused a greater interest in the coming of denaturized alcohol which will come into use after the first of the coming year when the new law which rtmoves the revenue of $1.08 per gallon, goes into effect. The advantage of alcohol over oils and the small cost of its manu facture will ultimately make its use general for many purposes, for domestic cooking alcohol will undoubtedly lessen greatly the use of wood and coal, especially where only a small fire is requited during the fcummer season, being handier than wood and coal and much cleaner and safer than either coal oil or gasoline. The time will coa:e when small power plants will mauufactuie their own alcohol for fuel pur poses. It can be imde from to many din.-rent tilings tuat its manufacture will be difficult to. control. A gallon of denatured alcohol is said to be worth two of k Tosene for litshtiug purposes. The thous ands of small power engines here tofore run by gasoline can be better t-eryed by alcohol. Much use can be made of them on frms, especially in irrigation in a small way. Alcohol is preferable to gasoline also because if the latter takes fire water will not put it out, while this ik-u il fire ex tinguisher will sub lue an alcohol lire. And it is said that the aiconoJ yields lu per cent more power than gosoline. As it cost, the record of a big Peoria distillery for 10 years showed that the average cost of corn used was 42.36 cents a bushel, which pro duced 4.76 gallons of alcohol, mak ing the cost per gallon 10.78 cents. Boise Will be Crowded Boise, Idaho, Aug. 19. With a num ber of states vet to be liearJ from, more than 1200 delegates dare been appoint ed to the nationat irrigation congress and have notifieJ the excutive commit tee that they will be present when the congress convenes on the morning of September 1. While under the con Htitution each state ia entitled to but 15 delegates to be appo inted by the Gover nor, but little attention has been paid to this restriction, Governor Hanley, of I:d!ana, appoiuteJ 04 citizens to accompany Vice-President Fairbanks; Governor McDonald, of Co'orf.do, appointed 52; Governors Ctisniber'ain, of Oregon, and Cutler, of Utah, more than 100 each, and other Chief Executives are appoint ing all who want to attend. Ful y 2000 deleeates are expected. Local committees have completed ar rangements for entertaining the dele gates and visitors to the congress. A house-to house canvass of the city has been made and all will be comfottubly accommodated at reasonable rates. At the .close of the congress the delegates will be taken on special excursion trains through vunous irrigated sec tions cf the stat". There is no better index to a town than its newspaper. If it is well printed, attractive in its makeup, reliable iu its news columns, stroDg in editorial comment-, but above all liberal in advertising patronage, depend up on it in nine cases out of ten, that town is an enterprising, up-to-date town; but if the paper looks shabby depend upon it the town is shabby for a newepaper is every where aud always a town's best mirror. The Gazette would rather take that appropriation that the Times is trying to send over to Pendle ton and hold a street fair in Hepp ner, Lexington or lone for the good of Morrow county. To Suit all Purses Morrow county produces more wealth per capita than any other county in the state of Oregon. Our territory within county lines is 75 miles in length by 35 miles in width, large enough for a state, but with not enough population for a good sized country village. Only 6000 people in the county. Every year we grow about 1,000,000 bushels of wheat. Tbis is worth abou 8700,000, We bare about 225,000 bead of sheep worth about $502,000, after shearing while (he wool from these sheep will sell for 8360,000. Then there are horses and cattle worth at east a half a million more. These are the main items In the wealth producers. It don't take much figuring when you look at these figures to come to the conclusion that Morrow county people make some money. We haye the Boil, the climate and the goods to make good. Morrow county's climate Is pleasant and healthful. Morrow county people are prosperous. Morrow county people haye money. Here in the town of ileppner we have two banks. The First National in publish ed statements shows deposits running from half a mil.ion dollars up. Both banks have a big business. Heppner can show the largest bank deposits of any town of its size in the Northwest, and it should be remembered that Lexington, nine miles away, and lone, 18 miles from Heppner both haye banks doing a good business. This looks like Morrow county people have money. But look here, almost half the population of Morrow county reside in the towns. This leaves only between 3,000 and 4,000 people In a territory 75 miles in leneth by 35 miles in wealth. Don't you think there is room for more people. Ten or twelve years ago land in Morrow county went begging at from $100 to $250 for a quarter section. Five years ago tbis land had looked up to $6.00 and $7.00 per acre. Today this land is woith $15 per acre with a few of the choicest lots some times bringing $20 per acre. Now the old timers are wondering why ttiey did not take advantage of this cheap land. They could have made a barrel of money. Over in the adjoining county of Umatilla wheat lands today are worth from $50 to $75 an acre. On the other side of us is Sherman county with wheat lands selling from $25 up. Here we are between with just as good land land at $15 per acre. Our lands are sure to go up in prioe. In a few years the people here wil be again wondering why thev did not buy some of this $15 land. The proposition is the same now as it was a few years ago, but it takes more money. Last year and year before a number of good farmars bought wheat lands and paid for it with the first crop. Come to Morrow county and investigate this land business.
