It is said that tne cjerKS empioyea uus year were handsomer than those of former ses- sions. This being the cape no grumb- ling is permissible. Commission bill when he said, mac tne state wouia ue reneveu oi a i . . i i iii"-fr t ff sion "Board and its clerk would also be relieved of all work, except the onerous work of drawing their salaries quarterly and riding on free passes all over the state." We notice that Mr. Connor makes a very severe charge in his communi cation against Joe. Simon and the Portland Republican nng, , because they defeated every '.till or proposition that looked to the amelioration of the -laboring roan, yet on the other hand, they favored the rich man at all times. There is a lack of honest indepen dence with many Legislators. The trade theory was quite apparent this year. f'You vote for my measure and I will support yours" whs a maxim of the last assembly in Oregou. This is far from commendable, and in some instances leads to downright dishon esty. Bro. J. NV. Watts has been "white washed" by the senate. That body would not believe Mrs. McPhearson, nor would they believe the affidavit of the young lady in reference to Watts' requirement of her to give him one dollar per jday of her salary provided, he secured for her a clerkship, which he did. The East Qreyonian talks thusly about the matter. Senator Watts, of Yamhill, accepted twenty dollars as payment for his in fluence in getting the claim of Mrs McPhearson through the legislature. . At the end of the session the charge was made against the senator, and he denounced it as an infernal he, but Mrs. McPhearson mildly stated, in a womanly way, that she did promise the- (dis) honorable "Fogg Horn" twenty dollars for his services. Did anyone ever hear of such baseness in a senator before? Senator Watts' term has expired and with it his usefulness to the people of Yamhill. He pretends to be a minister, is a temperance advo cate, a lover of hicrh moral ideas, nhd a member of the grand old party, yeti he is found selling hirusftlf for trontv I dollars and accepting that from a widow in needy circumstances. This is the man who wants to be United States marshal under President Harri son's administration. Will ha be, is the question. t The Review's new departure has met with such flattering success that we now find that when we begin the publication of our daily, that we will have to continue the semi-weekly, therefore we bid adieu to the weekly issues for good and for all. Weeklies, even as country newspapers, are to the public mind as vehicle i for conveying the news, as the stage coach is to the traveling public for transjiorting goods or passengers. Both the weekly and stage coach are too slow m their respec tive orbits to meet the demands of this wide awake part of our country. The Herald says that we "imitate." Certainly we do. ' Covet the b-st gifts," said a wise man. "Wise mJi change, fools never cx" We bet&ved you, and "imitated" you. Is it not right to '"imitate" a good thins? While it is true that the Herald man agement has done so :e thing iu the last few years that 3 should not like to "imitate" and; for which they are "sotry," yet we do not fo.' a moment think that no good can ccme from them. The muddle into which the state has been thrown concerning this rail road commission business will be laid at the door of Governor Pepnoyer. This could and should have been avoided by him. Even the Demo cratic papers of the state believe that the Governor erred in trying to handle this matter. The Beaton Leader has the following: The railroad commission is m a snarl. It is probable that Mr. Slater will contest the legality of his removal. The two commissioners appointed by the Governor will also probably sue for their places and salary attached thereto. Then if the Governor should appoint three more at the end of ninety days, they will sue. It will take the supreme court forty day3 and forty nights to untangle the mesh that has been woven by Hi3 Excellency. The only point that we cared to press in our discussion with the Plaindcaler and "Taxpayer" about one year ago was that Democratic administrations were not any more, iind we believed less, ex pensive in running public alT.iirs than the Republican administrations. We made our K)ints-good tlifi, and this last legislature only con (inns all of our statements, and hence the Vlaindealer saw, and tat illy acknowledged that he was whipped. Jf we could only break that journal of the habit of wriggling and Kouirming and dodging the issues. we would do the jteople a gmit good.
