Its par tides opaque and fixed, immediately ac quire strange mobility and translu- conce. The glass from which we drink seems to be insoluble but ex periment proves that it is1 not so. Glass retorts trued in distilling watar lr s i weight, and the water requires an equivalent impregnation cf flint and alkali, the elements of glass. The old stained glass windows of Westminster Abbey, whiuu for centuries have with stood the boatirur of the rain, have at last, by it action, become honey combed on the outside, and in many places are nearly eaten through. If a common drinking glass be pounded and moistened, enough of the powder will be dissolved to impart to the water a powerful reaction on turmeric paper. Pure flint may be converted, by com bination with water, into a transjarent tremulous jelly. Granite rock is grad ually disintegrated by water; and the marble nag otfthe door-step is worn by the drop that falls from the eaves. Water is one of the most important of the provimate principles of the ha man body, and exists in greater amount than all the rest taken together. It enters into the composition of every solid and fluid of the body. There is no tissue not even enamel in which it is not found, indeed there 13 no tissue except enamel, teeth, bones, ten dons, elastic tissue, and dried cuticle, of which it does not form one half. The aggregate amount of water con sumed as drink in a year by a healthy man is about i500 lbs., and the aver- as amount that makes its exit from the body by the kidneys, bowels, lungs and skin is about 1900 lba. The quan tity excreted threfore exceeds the quantity ingested by about 400 lbs., the surplus beine probably formed in the bod v, as M. Banal suggests, by the combination with hydrogen, of the oxygen in the inspired air and the ex cess of oxygen over thej hydrogen in our food. MABSIAOES DlTJtlSO 1HH7. The proverbial philawphy of "Old Si," the venerable plantation darkey, who gave to the world through the medium of Small's pen maxims of worldly wis dom, clothed in a verbiage of irresistible hutnor, has found a permanent place in humorous literature. - ftreat snmrise was shown when it was announced that he, having been converted under the ministrations of "Sam Jones," would become an evan gelist. At first though, a humorist In the pulpit seems incongruous. Is it really so? No doubt the mere buffoon attempting to turn men's hearts to solemn truths would meet with only contempt. But truth is not hidden in gloom. Genuine humor frequently illustrates and fastens in the mind bits ot wisdom that would otherwise pass unheeded. In his eulogy of Henry Ward Beecher, Rev. Dr. Parker says: "Whenever he. SI he hrausht June sun shine and music, and made even desi I ponding and surly men feel that a fuller and warmer summer, 'the Kingdom of Heaven,' itself was 'at hand.' " Thai is genial Christianity. f Mr. Small belongs to a witty family. He has a brother connected with Annoy Knox's and "Fat Contributor's" Texa SifHng$, a paper whieH- haa had pheno menal success in tiie field of humorous literature. Mr Frank A. Small is the present lepresetative of that popular paper in England, and, like his distin guished brother, he takes a deep in terest in the welfare of other people. Under date of 48 Porte n Road, Kens ington W. London, Eng., Sept. 27, 1887, he writes "While at Valding in Kent yesterday, I met Prof. S. Williams, Head Master of the Cleaves Endowed school. In the course of conversation ahout America. Professor Williams re marked that Warner's safe cure had boon of treat benefit to his wile, who had been much trouDieawitn aaisoraerea liver. Wiimi'i ufe carfj &n Amorieos? preparation) was all she had taken, and she haa experienced none 01 ner oia trouble for some months past, Mrs. Annie Jenness-MUler, editor of New York Dre$, and a very popular woman in the fashionable world says in Ler own Ikiagaibaejor October: "War ner's safe cure is tie only medicine I ever take or recommend,. In every in stance it gives new energy and vitality to all my powers." This distinguished woman also says that for ladies this great remedy is "peculiarly effective." Sam Small is likely to succeed as a moral teacher. When we remember how near together in human nature lis) the fountains of laughter and of tears, the deep effect his discourses must have on the masses can easily be imagined. ' "Why did God make so much out doors?'' exclaimed a little girl. We know not. He has made it and we should grow in it, broad, charitable and genial, fudging eveiy thing by merit, not bypre mdice. ; Scrofula Is one of the most fatal scourges which afflict mankind. It is often inherited, but may be the result of improper vaoci . nation, mercurial poison, nncleanlineas, and various other causes. Chronic Sores, Ulcers, Abscesses, Cancerous Humors, and, in some eases, Emaciation and Con sumption, result bom a scrofulous condi tion of the blood. This disease can be cured by the use ot Ayer's Sarsaparilla. I Inherited a scrofulous condition of the Blood, which caused a derangement of my whole system. After takasg less than four bottles ot Ayer's Sarsaparilla I am Entirely Cured and, tor the past year, have not found it necessary to use any medicine whatever. I am now in better health, and stronger, than eyer before. O. A. Willard, 218 Tremont St., Boston, Mass. I was troubled with Scrofulous Sores for five years; but, after using a few bottles of Ayer's Sarsaparilla, the sores . healed, and I have now good health. Elizabeth Warnock, 64 Appleton street, Lowell. Mass. Some months ago I was troubled with Scrofulous Sores on my leg. The limb was badly swollen and Inflamed, and the sores discharged large quantities of offen sive matter. Every remedy failed until I used Ayer's Sarsaparilla. By taking three botUea of this medicine the sores have been healed, and my health is re stored, lam grateful for the good it has done me.
