The tmount of ill-feeling among democratic Grand Army men over the defeat of Gen-" eral Slocum for commander in-chief is ' extraordinary, and it is very likely to - lead to heavy defections from the or der among those who regard their de feat as actuated entirely by political motives. . Ex-Gov. ,Stoneman of Cali fornia is to some extent the spokes man of the Malcontents, and lie appears utterly disconcerted by the way things have gone in the encampment. In the . course of a long interview on the sub ject, he says; ' " " "I think Gen. Grosvenor's speech in the encampment, in which ho said that tho Grand Army of the Republic was greater than the president aud greater than congress was rank' heresy. . No man in his senses" snonld givo utter- - ance to that assertion, ' The idea ' that any society in',' the- country, whether composed of military men or civD.lains is greater than the government, is rank treason. My understanding of the urauu Aimy w tue xvepuuuc is viiiit it is a fraternal society of old soldiers, with charity for its object I think that when that society assumes to he . greater than congress or the president or interests itself in political raove- ,1 it of legislation, it is guilty of usurpa tion. The Grand Army of the Repub- he has nothing to do with the presi dent's approval or disapproval of legis lation submitted to him by congress. I think that when the Grand Army of the Republic, as snch interferes with the business of the people, it is t;.me for the people to call a halt." . ' DISEUPTIOX FAVORED. "I think, , taking all things into consideration that the defeat of Gen. Slocum for commander-in-chief ought to be sufficient to disrupt theGrand Araay. , It is evident to my mind, that Gen.Slocum was defeated Ijecause ho was a democrat. Tho Grand Army of the Republic could not honor Gen. Slocum but Gen. Slo cum would have honored the G. A. R. as its commander-in-chief." General Slocum is-almost as bitter, I l,ut more guarded in his language. Deputy Commander Solomon, of California, says: "This is altogether an absurd view to take of the situa tion." ' An Astonished Subscriber. The infuriated subscriber had just rushed into the office, and a pale, spir ituelle reporter faced him calmly and asked him what he wanted. "I want to know who wrote this scurrilous article about mc." "I did." "You did? Sure it wasn't an error of the compositor!" . "Certainly.". ' 'Isn't tho proof reader to blame." "Not in the least" Y oung man, let me embrace youf I've been whipping editors all my life" and you're the first one I ever raet who did not blame the proof reader or compositor." Chicago Times. Notwishstanding the absorbing na ture of the Irish question, the British liberals find time to adopt as a- new j and definite plank in their platform the disestablishment cf tho state church in Wales. It fell to Mr. Gladstone's lot to lead the morement in parliament- for the disestablishment of the Irish church, andif he should live many years longer he would probably take the leading part in separating church and state In Scotland and England . as welL And this notwithstanding the fact that Mr. Gladstone is a good Episcopalian. If every boy ' in the country who has his own way to niako in the world "would sit down with the fact. Ion;; enough to master it, that nothing but hard, " honest wcrk will briiyj anything worth having in the .world, , there would be 'fewer young men Icoking for gome kind of work where they could keep their hands clean and in doing which they" could lie in bed till eight o'clock in the morning.
