Caarle; Wilson, conductor on ths passenger tram th clay ou which ths excursion party re turned from Portland, culled at this cilice and 'informed us that he is the person to -blame if any censure is due qu account ef the crowded condition of the cars from Eugene to Roseburg; that he left one of the coaches at Eu gene for the reason that the journals had become heated to such au extent that he did not consider it safe to brtni: the car further for fear of aeci dent; that he considered it better that the party should sutfer the inconven ience of being crowded than to take the risk of an accident. As Elopement. Mondn evening the socieev 'circle of Roseburg were thrown into a feverish state of excite ment by tho announcement that one of the young bloods of green baize cloth notonety had vamoo.se 1 the city and left for parts unknown. And that at the same time a gentle maiden with a nuld and dusky eye had left hsr po sition as waiter maid at one of the leading hotels iu the city to share the joys and sorrows of the festive sport (for a time at least). Certain gentle men boarders tt this hotel have lose their apetites and with it their cheer ful smiles. . The cotiee is nit half so sweet to them as it us-d to be. OfFib wanted. Our old frsanT Charles Dwelley, ot Galesville, called V.poTi us'some days ao", just after the ptibitl count had been reached in New York, lie was hi"h I v gratified with the-viotorv, and like many other Dem ocrats who have been staying out in the cold while Republican mugwumps have len warming themselves in the government offices, believes it is time we had a change, and is not adverse .to taking office himself. But tinlike many others who have battled manfully for the right for lo these many year, he is modest in his demands. All he asks for is Bill Carll's post office, and believes the Government service will benefited' by the change. Fire Its Oakland. ' 1 " . I ' Ll. ..11 . . . A Gra&d Jubilee- The Democratic celebration at Jack aonville on Friday of last week vas the grandest gathering ever - held in Southern Oregon. Your reporter joined the 'excursionists';.. that left this place on .Thursday 'a train and a jolly crowd was aboard. At Myrtle Creek a delegation got a!oard and at way siations all rJoii'r the line additions were made. The ride was an all-night one and kept up as a continual round of pleasure. A notable incident was the Multnomah delegation, consisting of one good Republican, Oscar Kil bourn, who bore the brunt of Demo cratic jokes with grest good humor. At Med ford hacks were furnished to take the delegations to Jacksonville. This is a bracing ride of some six miles. At Jacksonville at tho dawn of dav the clans began to gather from all sec tions. The town was beautifully dec oratfd. Evel'green trees, wreaths and mottoes ou every hand, while the large banner used at the Portland celebration was conspicuously displayed; smaller ones were too, numerous to mention. At night tho illumination ras grand; all the business places vieing with each other to excel), while Jacksonville's beautiful residences bote a gorgeous appearance. The torchlight procession with 350 torches and numerous trans parencies formed in line and made a circuitous route of the city, leturning to the grand stand where enthusiastic speeches were made by Col. Bowditch, W m. Culvig, S. F. Flood, Sam Colver, Col. Ross and others, Judge Prim being President of the day. Saturday and Sunday the excursionists were royally entertained and Sunday even ing amidst a volly of hearty cheers we turned our faces homeward, having en joyed ourselves hugely, and trusting that on some future occasion the good people e Jackson county may join us here in Rosebnrg in painting the town red ou equally as glorious a victoty. Don't Give Up Yet. It doesn't follow that a patient will die because the doctors hav 'given him up," or that he will recover because they promise to "pull him through." It is never too late to try the great virtues of Parker's Tonic. Dr. Michael Guiifoyle, of Binghampton, N. Y., was cured of Rheumatism bv'it after ten years of unspeakable suffering. Mr. R. W. Mosher, druggist, of the same eityi certifies' that ho has sold over a thousand bottles of Parker's'; Tonic through its reputation for this and other cures. Robber Caught. F. P. Hogan of this city was out at Jacksonville last week attending the Democrat's ratifi cation. On Sunday he cume over to Medford to iuv-tigute tho robbery of tho Railroad Company's safe at that olace, some weeks since. While in conversation with James Cunningham the Hreiit who claimed to have teen robbed. Mr. Hogan accused the agent of having stolen the money from the safe himself and demanded that he take him to the place where he had the mon ey buried. M. Cunningham confess ed and took Mr. Hogan to where the money was hid. He is now in jail a waiting trial and Mr. Hogan is tl owiirr of three hundred dollars, the io ward offered by the railroad compan .' for aprehending the thief. Hog Cholera. Hog cholera is a rain doini its work ot destrnetion to herds of swine throughout the eastern states. . It will no doubt make its ap pearence in this fctate sooner or later as the number of these animals are in creased. It is well for farmers follow ing the industry of hog raising to un derstand the disease and how to check it should it make its' apperance in this section. The disease is usually manifest by a wheezing cough the animals back becomes rounded up like the curve of a raiub.w, vomiting follows with a sickening smell. Tobacco is recom mended as a specific for the disease. It can be administered by cutting in small peices and putting it in butter milk. Habitcal Constipation. la a prolific source of misery and many ills, giving rise to headache, dullness, fevers, nervousness. restlessness, biliousness, indtgstion, poisor ing of the biood, etc. , The bitter, nauseous liver medicines, pills, salts and draughts formerly used to relieve the Bufferer, only aggravate the disease and sic'ten the stom ach. All who are afflicted iu that way, know the importance of a remedy pleasant to the palate, harmless iu its nature, and truly beneficial iu its action. When it became known that the duty on the drug was to be raised from $6 to $10 a pound, the California dealers bought iu several million dol lars worth, and as the supply exceeded the demand, it had to be stored away in various banks and warehouses. Re cently that which came in under the ofd rate was nearly exhausted, aud the first shipment under the new, con- Msting of 131 cases, netted the govern ment in tho way of duties G5,000.
