THE INDEPENDENT SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6, I8i4. The Legislature stands; Senate, 17 EM,ublicans.. 13 Democrats; the House 35 Itf publicans, 25' Democrats. Tim assures a Republican successor to Sen ator Slater. i ' The wife of Geo. McCrary, of the Hudson River Knitting Mills, N. Y., presented him with four children at a birth recently. Thoy are all girl?, and weighed seven pounds apiece. The feet that Marion Crawford's new work, "The Auicrictn Politician,'' is just out, reminds the New York Tribune ihat the American politician will be out himself as soon as Cleveland gets at him. AvouiN in Tiffin, Ohio, was arrest ed for resisting an officer. He wanted to kiss her, and she banged the door on his nose. The J udgj suspended scntanop, but warned her that it was dangerous to trifle with the law. Hoy. David B. Hill is the Lieutenant-Governor of New York, and will succeed Gov. Cleveland fcr the unexpired term, which is one year. Mr. Hill belongs in Elniira, but was bom in Havana, Vt, August 29, ISS-i. He was Mayor of Elmira. The Blaine hat club of Sacramento, headed the Cleveland torchlight pro cession in Sacramento a few nights since, per agreement befcre the elec tion, and enjoyed the occasion, shoot ing off fireworks and blowing horns as energetically as the most enthusiastic Democrats. Republican newspapers charge Dr. BurcLard and hh "Rum, Romanism and Rebellion" with defeating Blaine, to all of which the Rev. Dr. replies that he was only "an unconcious in strument in the hands ot 'God, to work out political reform for the people of this country. j " , . -. A Pennsylvania Republican, when lie Jeavned that Grant had failed to register and vote for Blaine, took the Ge neral's picture out of a frame and inserted that of a good looking girl with an apron full of pups. This re venge was almost as good as burning Grant in effip-v. A. C. Jones and S. F, Floed are candidates for tho two laud office po sitions at Roseburg under the incoming Democratic administration. Should we hava the picking out of Democrats for these positions we would stop right there as both are competaut and do serving. Jacksonville Sentinel. The election is now over, James G. Blaine will have plenty of time, to indicate hs tai ni&lied honor and the fair fame of his family. Would it not be well for the Republican newspapers f Oregon to wait until he settles his suit with the Sentinel company, before hoisting the Plumed Knight's banner for 188S 1 Sullivan, the bruiser, thinks it un just to arrest professional boxeis just because they draw a little blood occa sionally, and cites the fact that Ros coe Conkhng has made the claret fly or in other words, painted his oppo nent's proboscis red in. many a contest and has been -unmolested. Conkhng, it is said, struts hka a rccster and boxes like an athlete. The United States is without doubt the greatest nation in the world, not excepting Hotentot or England, and it is only a little over one hundred years old. Its population is greater than England, France, Germany, Russia or Australia. Its wealth, $55,000,000, 000 is greater than any of these leading nations.. Its debt is less; its annual expense is greater than France and Germany and less than Great Britain, Russia or Austria. The Southern Oregon Development company will soon begin the construc tion of a building in East Portland, to occupied by their stamp quartz mill and reduction works, which they in tn4 to ioake complete in every re spect, and to prepare for crushing and i educing the rebellious ores of South ern Oregon. The company have Jive hundred tons of ore, which will be brought front there at on ir .....i upon which the work of crushing and reducing will he begun as aoon as the crusher can be placed in position. Tnis company start out fully prepared, financially, to do the work laid out in their articles of incorporation. A number of country newspapers in Oregon are using their best endeavors j to keeP the PIu,Hd KniSh their ! lettdt",s; f"r w"t purpose -ve are at a loss to know. To read one of their scholastic dfusiona on James G. Or hers are bent upon convincing their leaders that he did not writ the Mulligan letters. Tkey may as well drop this subject and learn that the election is orcr. Thai it was not the Mulligan letters or the suit against the Sentinel tuatjdefeated Blaine. He died of over production and too much protection; and was slaughtered in the house of h's friends. That he does not poses3 the qualities of mind or heart to make him a great or successful leader. He will never again figure in the history of the country as a presidential" candi date. He is as completely shelved as was Henry Clay in 1844 on the tariff question. Mr. Blaine has shown some brilliant and redeeming qualifications during the campaign, and exhibited an unusual amount of energy in ELakiag a personal canvas. But he exhibited an amount of temper at the chagrin of his dt-fe.it not in keeping with the dig nity of (he position he hud, occupied. His Augusta speech will uot sjou b3 forgotten by the American people; it was but li-tle short of rank : treason. No national party can ever sanction the sentiment he expressed, with any show of success. No, he will not be a candidate in 1888, those papers who ar trying to keep his corpse wram with the hope of reward will get their labor for their paias. Cincinnati Frauds to be Investigated. On Tuesday the 2d, Foliett, as a question of privilege, pre sented the following preamble and resolution: "I do impeach Lot Wright, United States Marshal of th southern district of Ohio, of high crimes and misde meanors, I charge him with usurpa tion of power and violation of law, in that ha appointed a large number of; general and special deputy marshals to serve at several voting piecincts in Cincinnati, at the election for a mem ber of Congress, the 14th f Octobwr, 1884, and armed said deputy marshals with pistols and othsr deadly weapons, said to hare been furnished by the war department of the United States gov ernment; in that the large number of deputy marshals so appointed and armed were notorious criminals and men known of vicious and brutal hab its and reputation, and many of them non-residents of Cincinnati and the state of Ohio; in that said deputy marshals, acting under his orders and directions, aided and abetted and en couraged fraudulent voting, intimida tion of voters, and gross outrages upon the elective franchises and rights of honest voters of the -city, in further ance uf the interests of a political party and its candidates. Therefore, Resolved, That the committee on expenditures in the department of justice be required and directed, as soon as can reasonably be done, to in vestigate such charges ami report to this house." Republican leaders tried to get around the investigation by filibuster ing. The speaker held the maker a question of privilege and the resolution was adopted. AN OUTttAGE.
