PORTLAND ITEMS. The Home Mutual Insurance Company declared Its 100th dividend recently. Lena Patton, aged 22, has been sent to the insane asylum by Judge Stearns. - It is rumored that the work of the Term inal Company at Albina is practically stopped. The wife of Jailor Dougherty is lying very ill at her residence, with inflammatory rheumatism. The members of the City Guard, O. S. M., East Portland, organized a rifle team on the 10th inst. i . Chinamen are beginning to take posses sion of the Sherlock block, corner of Sec ond and Oakstreets. . John O'Brien was jailed recently on a charge of stealing two cooked ducks from the Capital restaurant. Much complaint is heard of late in re gard to the employment of Chinese by con tractors having city work. Al Webster, alias Fried, is accused of stealing an overcoat from the International hotel belonging to C. Signor. . : - The evidence gleaned in the Bloxam Fisher homicide, nas a tendency to show that the murder was premeditated. Murray, the murderer of Yanke, still retains his self-possession, and appears cool and indifferent to his surroundings. One of Uncle Sam's boys in blue, while in a drunken condition, fell through a plate-glass window at the Esmond Hotel. It is understood the "saloon keepers will give up the fight and pay the fines assessed against them for running without license. The Northwest News and Daily Standard are having it hot and heavy. They charge each other with publishing unreliable news. A Chinaman plead guilty in Justice Greene's court recently to having quail in his possession out of season. lie was fined $10. Thomas Brennan. the well known Irish leader, at present in California, will shortly visit this and other cities in the iracihc Northwest. Elsasser, the man who mutilated himself on the 5th inst., has become paralyzed on one side and has lost his hearing. He will probably die. An emigrant, just from Dakota, while crossing the ferry at Albina, made a mis step and fell into the river. He was promptly rescued. . Mrs. Mulkey. mother of the Deputy Prosecuting Attorney, is lying quite ill at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Arm strong in this city. Sneak thieves have been doing a great deal of mischief of late in this city. Mrs. F. Deas, 231 Sixth street, lost a valuable Cloak in that manner on the 8th. A Chinaman lately arrived here from New xork, bringing with him a white wo man as his wife, and is the second one in this city who has a white spouse. The announcement that Tacoma was to be the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad, did not create as much excitement here as was thought it would. Mrs. Burtenshaw, sufferine: from abject poverty, died on the 8th inst., after having given birth to a still-born child. She did not make known her condition until too late. A bov named Raabe. aeed 11 vears. com Elains that Charles Hamlin, an overgrown rute, had kicked and abused him, on the 10th inst., because he had presented a bill long over due. ; The County Court refused to allow ex Sheriff Buchtel's claim, of between $2,000 and $3,000, for the maintenance of prison ers and other expenses Incurred by him while an omciai. J. Kohn, an old and well known citizen of Portland, died at his residence, January 10th, of paralysis of the heart. Deceased was 55 years of age and a resident of this city ior the last thirty years. Delia Wilson, a young woman of ques tionable character, and a young man named W. II. Mohler, were locked up for quarrel ing on the streets. Mohler claims the wo man defrauded him out of some money. A shooting affray occurred near the Red house, January 10th, between Thomas Cor nelius and Edward Lawrence, resulting in the latter being shot in the neck, inflicting ' a serious but hot necessarily fatal wound. In the County Court recently a petition -was presented by D. E. Budd, asking for permission , to construct a street railroad or tramway on the juacaciam road trom the Red house to the1 city limits. The petition was granted. . The attorneys in the breach of promise case, wherein Laara M. woods and ur. (j, H. Davis are respectively plaintiff and de fendant are busy at work preparing the papers for the defendant's appeal to the supreme uourt. True bills have been found by the grand jury against Fred Hoyt, for stealing an overcoat from Thedore Lee; Martin Joyce, accused of $2.45 from G. C. Brown, and Charles Wilson, charged with the larceny of $344.24. Charles Christy, clerk to the Chief of Po lice, has, in response to an order, just had a large number of blanks printed, to be used by physicians in reporting births, deaths and all contagious diseases within the corporate limits. Preston Notte & Co. have applied to the State Circuit Court for an order to restrain Hyman Gallick from confessing any more uuKiucui, auu umu limb uiiaiu uiuutu, 11. Hellbruner and William irriedlander be restrained from takinar any more. The Gutta Percha Rubber and Manu facturing Company have begun suit in the State Circuit Court, against Sheriff Sears, to recover their warrant from the city of East Portland, which he holds upon a writ of attachment issued to Joe Buchtel. A suit was begun in the State Circuit Court recently hy B. Sylvester to recover $2,590, loaned to Mrs. Katy Wagner, pro prietress of the Baldwin lodging house in this city. Mrs. Wagner denies the claim and will contest the case in the courts. On the morning of the 1st, a collision occurred between two hacks driven by Thomas Fitzgibbon and P. H. Baugher. Fitzgibbon was thrown violently to the ground, receiving an ugly gash on the fore head and rendered insensible for several hours.';; Quan Sue Chung, the Chinaman who was accused of the larceny of some chickens belonging to Gustavus Stein, had an ex amination in the police court on the 10th. and was exonerated from all blame, as the real culprit was found to be a pressman by the name of C D. Gardenier. John McCoy was dangerously stabbed during a drunken brawl at Westport on New Years day. He has a bad wound be low the heart, another below the right lung and several others in various places. We is at the St. Vincent's Hospital, and it is feared the wounds will prove fatal. ; Dornee, the young man who was brought from Uoquille on a charge or. ronbing the mail, was not sent home by the State. He was penniless when he reached this city, and as his expenses were not allowed he had no means of getting back. United States Marshal Kearney gave him $5 and another man $1, and with this he started for home on foot, about ZM miles away. A party of four or five men, drunk and very hilarious, were congresrated on the river front some few davs since, shouting and singing. In the midst of their con viviality one of their number fell into the river. His companions were too much in toxicated to render him any assistance, and if it had not been for some workmen close by he doubtless would have lost his life. In the United States District Court, Jan nary 9th, Judge Deady denied the motion of the defendants for, a new trial, in the case of Horace McCune vs. The Northern Pacific Railroad Company. As no case in volvinc a less amount than $5,000 can be appealed to the United States courts at Washington, the railroad company win have to pay the $2,500 damages awarded to AlcCune by the jury. Two fair but frail damsels, Blanche Stone and Daisy Mucker by name, occa sioned much merriment at Justice Bush- wiilr"a nrmrr. Tw0nt.lv. T., came out at the end of 1883, $15,000 in debt. Mrs. MaryKerwin.of Newineton.Conn.. is dead at the great age 105 years. Nearly 5.000.000 bushels of coal left Pitts burg on Christmas for down river cities. Mrs. Klesser. of Mauch Chunk. Pa.. eloped with her daughter's lover recently. Peter K. Mortran. of Richmond. Va.. aged 98, a veteran of the war of 1812, is dead. A conference in the interest of a uniform bankrupt act was held in Washington re cently. The total number of Master Masons in Washington Territory is 1.390: total lodges, 49. Twenty thousand men were encaged on Christmas day in cleaning the streets of New York. One million cattle will be placed on cat tle ranches on the Cherokee strip by the 1st ot April. The State of Wisconsin reoorts 13.406 marriages, 12,344 births and 4,684 deaths during the year. Houchkirlc the Albany. N. Y.. barn burner, has been sentenced to five years in the btate prison. The jury in the Emma Bond rape case at Hillsboro. 111., ; January 2d, returned a verdict of not guilty. John Furlong' one of the old pioneers of Milwaukee, settling there in 1836, died on tnezbthof JJecember. Pierre Lorillard presented to his 3.000 employes a week's wages as a Christmas gift, aggregating $17,600. D. P. Jenkins, formerly of Seattle, now of Spokane Falls, is a candidate for Gov ernor of Washington Territory. Osman Boiety, of Chamberlain. S. C. continues to drive a street car, although his wiie has just inherited $30U,0UU. An attempt has been made to blow up the Kentucky State capitol at Frankfort, the building being badly damaged. Washington Palmer of Lead ville, las soed a lioness, captured her cub and took them both to the city for exhibition. Isaac I. Sprague. the living skeleton. who weighs forty pounds, has willed his body to the Harvard Medical College. Burglars entered the house of Governor Adam s at Carson, Nev., on New Years night and took a diamond ring valued at $1,200. Thirty years ago lager beer was practic ally unknown in this country: now there are 2,500 breweries with an investment of 150,000,000. Rev. Huntley, the new chaplain of the Senate, prayed especially for General Sheridan at the opening of the session of the Zlth ult. The case of Rev. W. Mitchell, of Boston, arrested for stealing a book from a store, has been dismissed. He is now in a pri vate asylum. A Toronto man died of small pox twenty- six years ago, and a week or two since Ins grandchild slept upon the same bed and took the disease. George H. Horner, of Boston, who began life in humble way, sent six nieces and nephews each a check for 5,000 as a Christmas present, as is his custom. There are about 66,000 locomotive en gines in the world, and 120,000 passenger, and 500,000 freight cars. There are 200,000 miles of track and the capital invested is $2,000,000,000. A petition requesting Congress to pre vent the importation of foreign laborers. under contracts made abroad, is receiving many signatures of workingmen at Read ing, a. A towboat caught fire on New Year's night, near Pittsburg, while going up the river. The crew became panic stricken and jumped in the . river. Four were drowned. A mass meeting at Tremont temple, Bos ton, on the z7th ult., considered the con stitutional prohibition of the manufacture and sale of liquor. About 200 persons were present. Dizer & Co., boot and shoe manufactur ers, East Weymouth, Mass., have decided to stop business rather than accede to the demands of the striking lasters. Nearly 400 are employed. About 200 Italians, men, women and children, were recently landed in New Or leans from Vera Cruz, in the last stages of destitution, without money and most or them poorly clad. Charles C. Johnson, who committed sui cide at Richmond, Ind., lost an arm, after which his twin babies died. .Next his wife died, then another child, which was born when the mother died. Colonel Elijah Strasbury, who just died in Baltimore at the age of 88, served in the war of 181a, had been Mayor of his city, member of the Maryland Legislature, and held sundry minor local offices. William Astor has purchased from the Morris Land Company, all its property ly ing between One-hundred-and-fifty-third street and the Harlem river, New York, with water privilege, ior $zo,uuo. Sarah Winnemucca, the Piute princess. has drawn up a petition to Congress for the restoration of the tribe of the Malheur reservation, and for other relief, in order that the sufferings of the Prates may be mitigated. The whale is a small affair beside the oil well, but still he is fished for. The season's catch in the North Pacific yields 11.200 bar rels of oil, 162,244 pounds of bone, and 310, 000 pounds of walrus ivory, the whole worth $860,0U0. - Three of the Southern Pacific Railroad train robbers and murderers are in custody at Silver City, A. T. The first one, a ne gro caught at Lias Vegas, JN. M., confessed, and the two others were taken at Engle, J. M.. on the aoth ult. Smith, the man who was blown up by the recent explosion at the gravel pit near Sumner. W. T.. has almost recovered from his injuries. He is well enouh to be around, and will probably be discharged from the hospital in a day or two. Perry H. Smith, of Chicago, is opposing the movement to have trust funds removed from his hands. He denies the negligence and mismanagement and says he has al ways promptly paid .over interest and in come and made reports when requested to doSO. Alhprt Johnson, a vounc necro of Wat- sonville, Cal., and Miss Lizzie Shade, of Sacramento, were married on New Years day at the first named place. Miss Shade is a prepossessing young woman, aged 26, and her strange infatuation cannot be ac counted for.
