One of Uncle Sam's boys in blue, while

It is understood the "saloon keepers will
give up the fight and pay the fines assessed

A Chinaman plead guilty in Justice
Greene's court recently to having quail in
his possession out of season. lie was
fined $10.
Thomas Brennan. the well known Irish
leader, at present in California, will shortly
visit this and other cities in the iracihc
Northwest.
Elsasser, the man who mutilated himself
on the 5th inst., has become paralyzed on
one side and has lost his hearing. He will
probably die.
An emigrant, just from Dakota, while
crossing the ferry at Albina, made a mis
step and fell into the river. He was
promptly rescued. .
Mrs. Mulkey. mother of the Deputy
Prosecuting Attorney, is lying quite ill at
the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Arm
strong in this city.
Sneak thieves have been doing a great
deal of mischief of late in this city. Mrs.
F. Deas, 231 Sixth street, lost a valuable
Cloak in that manner on the 8th.
A Chinaman lately arrived here from
New xork, bringing with him a white wo
man as his wife, and is the second one in
this city who has a white spouse.
The announcement that Tacoma was to
be the western terminus of the Northern
Pacific Railroad, did not create as much
excitement here as was thought it would.
Mrs. Burtenshaw, sufferine: from abject
poverty, died on the 8th inst., after having
given birth to a still-born child. She did
not make known her condition until too
late.

J. Kohn, an old and well known citizen
of Portland, died at his residence, January
10th, of paralysis of the heart. Deceased
was 55 years of age and a resident of this
city ior the last thirty years.
Delia Wilson, a young woman of ques
tionable character, and a young man named
W. II. Mohler, were locked up for quarrel
ing on the streets. Mohler claims the wo
man defrauded him out of some money.
A shooting affray occurred near the Red
house, January 10th, between Thomas Cor
nelius and Edward Lawrence, resulting in
the latter being shot in the neck, inflicting
' a serious but hot necessarily fatal wound.
In the County Court recently a petition
-was presented by D. E. Budd, asking for
permission , to construct a street railroad or
tramway on the juacaciam road trom the
Red house to the1 city limits. The petition
was granted. .
The attorneys in the breach of promise
case, wherein Laara M. woods and ur. (j,
H. Davis are respectively plaintiff and de
fendant are busy at work preparing the
papers for the defendant's appeal to the
supreme uourt.
True bills have been found by the grand
jury against Fred Hoyt, for stealing an
overcoat from Thedore Lee; Martin Joyce,
accused of $2.45 from G. C. Brown, and
Charles Wilson, charged with the larceny
of $344.24.
Charles Christy, clerk to the Chief of Po
lice, has, in response to an order, just had
a large number of blanks printed, to be
used by physicians in reporting births,
deaths and all contagious diseases within
the corporate limits.
Preston Notte & Co. have applied to the
State Circuit Court for an order to restrain
Hyman Gallick from confessing any more

be restrained from takinar any more.
The Gutta Percha Rubber and Manu
facturing Company have begun suit in the
State Circuit Court, against Sheriff Sears,
to recover their warrant from the city of
East Portland, which he holds upon a writ
of attachment issued to Joe Buchtel.
A suit was begun in the State Circuit
Court recently hy B. Sylvester to recover
$2,590, loaned to Mrs. Katy Wagner, pro
prietress of the Baldwin lodging house in
this city. Mrs. Wagner denies the claim
and will contest the case in the courts.
On the morning of the 1st, a collision
occurred between two hacks driven by
Thomas Fitzgibbon and P. H. Baugher.
Fitzgibbon was thrown violently to the
ground, receiving an ugly gash on the fore
head and rendered insensible for several
hours.';;
Quan Sue Chung, the Chinaman who was
accused of the larceny of some chickens
belonging to Gustavus Stein, had an ex
amination in the police court on the 10th.
and was exonerated from all blame, as the
real culprit was found to be a pressman by
the name of C D. Gardenier.
John McCoy was dangerously stabbed
during a drunken brawl at Westport on
New Years day. He has a bad wound be
low the heart, another below the right lung
and several others in various places. We
is at the St. Vincent's Hospital, and it is
feared the wounds will prove fatal. ;
Dornee, the young man who was brought
from Uoquille on a charge or. ronbing the
mail, was not sent home by the State.
He was penniless when he reached this
city, and as his expenses were not allowed
he had no means of getting back. United
States Marshal Kearney gave him $5 and
another man $1, and with this he started
for home on foot, about ZM miles away.
A party of four or five men, drunk and
very hilarious, were congresrated on the
river front some few davs since, shouting
and singing. In the midst of their con
viviality one of their number fell into the
river. His companions were too much in
toxicated to render him any assistance, and
if it had not been for some workmen close
by he doubtless would have lost his life.
In the United States District Court, Jan
nary 9th, Judge Deady denied the motion
of the defendants for, a new trial, in the
case of Horace McCune vs. The Northern
Pacific Railroad Company. As no case in
volvinc a less amount than $5,000 can be
appealed to the United States courts at
Washington, the railroad company win
have to pay the $2,500 damages awarded to
AlcCune by the jury.
Two fair but frail damsels, Blanche
Stone and Daisy Mucker by name, occa
sioned much merriment at Justice Bush-
wiilr"a nrmrr. Tw0nt.lv. The cnv ond ffa-
tive Bfanche was up on a charge of assault
and battery, and about the first thing she
did when brought before his Honor was to
raise a disturbance, for which she was
fined $25, besides having to pay another

Three of the Southern Pacific Railroad
train robbers and murderers are in custody
at Silver City, A. T. The first one, a ne

Smith, the man who was blown up by
the recent explosion at the gravel pit near
Sumner. W. T.. has almost recovered from
his injuries. He is well enouh to be around,

Alhprt Johnson, a vounc necro of Wat-
sonville, Cal., and Miss Lizzie Shade, of
Sacramento, were married on New Years
day at the first named place. Miss Shade
is a prepossessing young woman, aged 26,
and her strange infatuation cannot be ac
