SLEEPING VOLCANOES A thin, vapory smoke, lazily ascend ing from its crater, may be the only vis ible sign of life in the sleeping volcano ; but within is a raging sea of fire, molten rock and sulphurous gases. Those who make their homes in the peaceful val leys below know the danger, and though frequently warned by the rumblings and ouakings, these signs of impending erup tion go unheeded. They are living in fancied security ; fwhen the giant awakes with deafening roars, and they are lost beneath a downpour of heated rock and scalding ashes. JUSSXEFTtPBDiBG GO.. ATlAUTAs GA Make "Pat" Pbraaba. Ttie gift of the Irish peasant for making expressive and humorous phrases is not by any mtans a fiction of literature." The' use of "pat" 1 phrases Is natural to him, says Illus trated Bits. A clerical traveler in Cavan not long ago asked a peasant bow far it was to a certain village, and was an swered, "Two miles." "What! Only two miles?" said the traveler, who bad before traveled the distance and found It a long road. "Well, your reverence," answered the peasant, "it is two miles strong . and rich, so to sphake." A somewhat similar story Is told by one of Lord Zetland'3 party, who were making inquiries into the condition of a distressed district. They were cross ing a lake; a gale was blowing, and waves were dashing over the boat. The gentleman referred to had been assured that an Irish peasant, if treat ed well, will always agree with what Is said to him, rather than appear dis agreeable. It struck the gentleman that here was a good chance to put the assertion to proof. "There is very little wind, Pat," he said to one of the boatmen. The answer came through the howl ing elements: "Very little, indade, yer honor, but phwat there is is mighty s throng." Kind-Hearted, The tenderest heart may exist in spite of the roughest exterior. A little fox terrier had been left outside a Bos ton store by its owner. Evidently the dog had not been long in the city, for it trembled with fright at being out of the protecting presence of its mas ter. As it lay crouching in the door way a huge laborer came along. Reaching down pityingly, he stroked the wee animal, speaking a few sooth ing words at the same time. The re sult was that the fear in the dog's heart subsided. It wagged its tail knowingly and licked the kind-hearted man's hand. When it was left alone it sat up bravely, as though feeling assured that human beings would do it no harm. Strong Language. Fredericksburg, Ind., June 20.- Rev. Enoch P. SAMUEL R. SPRECHER. Catarrh of the Kidneys a Common Disease Kidney Trouble Often Fails to Be Regarded as Catarrh by Physicians. Catarrh of the kidneys is very com mon indeed. It is a pity this fact is not better known to the physicians as well as the people. People have kidney disease. They take some diuretic, hoping to get bet ter. .They never once think of catarrh. Kidney disease and catarrh are seldom associated in the minds of the people, and, alas,' it la not very of ten, associ ated in the minds of' the physicians.
