Rice and dried fish la the uniform
food of the Japanese army in cam
paigning times. This Is the way in
which the rice is cooked. It la boiled
until quite thick and glutinous. Next
It la placed on a ceramic slab, rolled
out, and cut into squares. The squares
are then placed in the sun to dry and
often turned. When hard as sea bis
cuit and greatly reduced "in weight,
they can be stored.
A certain number are allowed each
day to the soldier. All he has to do is
to' break up a square in boiling water
and to add the dried fish. In a few
minutes be has what seems to him a
delicious thick soup. If be cannot pro
cure boiling water be simply eats his
rice eake dry. In the fruit season he
substitutes fruit, when he can obtain
It, for the fish.

features of interest for serious readers.
Besides further chapters of the serials,
Dr. 8. Weir Mitchell's "The Youth of

stories in the number, Miriam Michel

SLEEPING

A thin, vapory smoke, lazily ascend

but within is a raging sea of fire, molten
rock and sulphurous gases. Those who
make their homes in the peaceful val

frequently warned by the rumblings and

Ttie gift of the Irish peasant for

A clerical traveler in Cavan not
long ago asked a peasant bow far it
was to a certain village, and was an
swered, "Two miles."
"What! Only two miles?" said the
traveler, who bad before traveled the
distance and found It a long road.
"Well, your reverence," answered
the peasant, "it is two miles strong .
and rich, so to sphake."
A somewhat similar story Is told by
one of Lord Zetland'3 party, who were
making inquiries into the condition of
a distressed district. They were cross
ing a lake; a gale was blowing, and
waves were dashing over the boat.
The gentleman referred to had been
assured that an Irish peasant, if treat
ed well, will always agree with what
Is said to him, rather than appear dis
agreeable. It struck the gentleman
that here was a good chance to put
the assertion to proof.
"There is very little wind, Pat," he
said to one of the boatmen.
The answer came through the howl
ing elements:
"Very little, indade, yer honor, but

Kind-Hearted,
The tenderest heart may exist in
spite of the roughest exterior. A little
fox terrier had been left outside a Bos
ton store by its owner. Evidently the
dog had not been long in the city, for
it trembled with fright at being out
of the protecting presence of its mas
ter. As it lay crouching in the door
way a huge laborer came along.
Reaching down pityingly, he stroked
the wee animal, speaking a few sooth
ing words at the same time. The re
sult was that the fear in the dog's
heart subsided. It wagged its tail
knowingly and licked the kind-hearted
man's hand. When it was left alone
it sat up bravely, as though feeling
assured that human beings would do
it no harm.

Catarrh of the kidneys is very com

People have kidney disease. They

Kidney disease and catarrh are seldom

Too few physiciane recognize catarrh of
