Labor does not receive an equitable portion of thee; therefore Iibor should oppose protection." This is -a specimen of the false logic free traders ask wage-workers to accept Its major premise is a false assumption. Protec tion begets the most active and sharp competition and th's pre cludes making enormous profits. This is the history of protection. It gives no one any sort of mo nopoly. It simply determines that within certain limits our do mestic consumption of manufac- shall be sup- IUICU tUlBUlUUln.J r I plied by our own manufacturers and our own workmen. It is a fact that to-day, under the operation of protection, our markets are supplied with com modities of our own production of better quality and more reason-1 .11 : it. -,. ...er roarMKVl I auic pm.cs mau in the same length ot time unatr conditions closely ooraenng ou free trade, lne advocates oi protection have ever neia inai competition would make enor- mous profits impossible.
