THE CORVALLIS GAZETTE. FRIDAY. JUNE 15, 1000. AN OBJECT LESSON. The Weekly Northwestern Miller, a marked copy of which has reached our table, speaks dis paragingly of a flour trust which it states is contemplated by the millers of the Pacific Northwest. This is news to people of this section, but if such a move is in prospect, the following discourse from the above-named paper may be perused with profit: "If the coast millers are simple enough to get entangled in a scheme to form a flour trust they will deserve what they will un doubtedly get that is, the worst end of it. Money may be going begging in the financial centers of the Pacific coast; with condi tions in that money market we are not familiar. If so, it is possible that investors can be found for flour trust securities, but it the promoters of this plan imagine for one moment that they will be able to float any por tion of their stocks or bonds in the eastern money markets, they are doomed to bitter disappoint ment. Some time will pass be fore any investors in these mar kets can be found to even look at a flour trust security. The rapid and disastrous collapse of the United States Flour Milling Company was an object lesson which eastern investors ate not likely to forget. In spite of all warnings and in spite of the re peated and complete exposure of the fallacy of the scheme, foolish people were found to buy these securities. The story of the stock market will best illustrate what happened to these lambs. Early in September, 1899, the preferred stock of the United States Flour Milling Company was quoted at 84. On Sep tember 21st stockholders felt a jar when it dropped to 50, a de cline of 25 points in one day. From this figure it slid grace fully downward, to the amaze ment and disgust of its friends. In November 15 was the bid ding price; by December 1st, 14c. It celebrated the glad new year by being quoted at 12c on January 1st; by the end of Feb ruary the company was iu the receivers' hands, having become a ghastly failure, and on May I7th at a sale of its bonds in New York, they realized but 28 c, while its preferred stock is now quoted at 2c and its com mon at ic. If, after this ex perience, any one has nerve enough to talk about forming a flour trust, in the hope that the general public can be induced to purchase its securities, he should be looked after by his friends, for he is not in full possession of his faculties. Possibly the Pacific coast millers who are figuring on this combination do not intend to offer their stocks and bonds to the public, and have other means of providing the sinews of war. Nevertheless the undertaking will be a failure just the same and those who go into it will live to regret their action." HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF. The man who believes that the malicious attacks upon President McKinley by a portion of the press and public are without pre cedent, or that it is only of late years that the entire public has not been wholly satisfied with the acts of its admiuistra tion, should brush the dust off of his history. Washington and Lincoln, whom we now almost deify, passed through such an ordeal of abuse, as makes the present censure of McKinley sound like commendation. The man who believes that our presi dential campaigns are conducted less decently than iu the early days of the Republic, has not read of the method pur sued lor the election of that idol of democracy, Andrew Jackson. Here is a tribute to Washington published in his day by the Phil adelphia Aurora. It has all the ear-marks of a present-day attack upon McKinley: "If ever there was a period of rejoicing this is the moment. Every heart in unison with the freedom and happiness of the people ought to beat high with exultation that the name of Washington from this day has ceased to give currency to politi cal iniquity and to legalizing cor ruption. A new era is now opening upon us an era which promises much to the people, for public measures must now stand upon their own merits and ne farious projects can no longer be supported by a name. It is the subject of the greatest astonish ment that a single individual should have carried his designs against the public liberty so far as to have put in jeopardy its very existence. Such, however, are the facts, and with this star ing us in the face, this day ought to be a jubilee in the United States." Growing along the sidewalks and cross-walks of Corvallis is a most bountiful crop of thistles. While the bloom is on these beautiful and fragrant plants, there may be some excuse for permitting them to stand, but as these ripen and the myriad seeds are wafted on our afternoon breezes to every point of the compass, practical people see the danger of too much of a good thing, and ask that the bonny thistle be harvested. It is some body's duty to do this. Now is the proper time. A few even ings or the cool of the morning with the aid of a scythe, much could be accomplished toward improving the appearance of the city and exterminating these pests. A hammer and nails would also be found handy iu re pairing some bad breaks in cross walks, which would be exposed by the mowing of the grass and weeds which now conceal them. Some people are hard to please. Not satisfied with the recent great republican victory in Ore gon they are asking that Bryan stump the state again this fall. Aguinaldo is the Jeff Davis of the Philippines. We warrant he is even now masquerading in petticoats. K. R. Co. Banquet Last Monday evening L. I. Gregory, field manager of Ore gon and Washington for the King-Richardson Pub. Co., of Springfield, Mass., gave a ban quet to some 25 of the students who are going to represent the company during the summer. At S p. m. a strong representa tive company of students assem bled in the dining parlors of Hodes & Hall, where a brilliant table awaited them. Several of those present have previously been in the field and these re cited several humorous incidents which had happened to them while canvassing. After the heavier part of the meal Mr. Gregory read a letter of some length from Judge H.E- Hadley, judge of the superior court of Whatcom county, Wash. In closing the judge said: "Such an experience cannot fail to be valuable to any young man aside from the immediate finan cial profit it may be to him. I have never had any other exper ience in as short a period of time. that has been as valuable to me in all the relations of a profes sional and business life. Always under every circumstance be a thorough gentleman and you will ever be received and treated as such. A rousing toast to the judge showed that the boys appreciated" his kindly interest and excellent advice. Mr. Greg ory continued iu a neatly-worded and humorous speech, iu part as follows: "This is the close of my first trip to Oregon. Before coming here I had heard much of Oregonian's webfect, but from observation of the Corvallis boys j I find that some Oregonians can waddle a little taster than some I other people can walk. (Laugh- i ter.) On this the eve of your I going forth throughout the state I bespeak for you the ears of all Oregon. The result of your labors depends upon your will power, pluck and intelligence." A hearty toast was then drunk to "our manager" and the meet ing ended with warm handshak ing which showed that a spirit of unusual enthusiasm and good feeling existed among the com pany present. The Politician. The politician is my shepherd; I shall not want for any good thing during the campaign. He leadeth me (the night before the election), into the saloon for my vote's sake, he filleth my pockets with good cigars, and my glass of beer runneth over. He pre pareth my ticket for me in the presence of my better judgment. Yea, though I walk through the mud and rain to vote for him and shout myself hoarse when he is elected, straightway he for- vfffli mA In wlln T TllPlt mm 1,.' t-nmtl. not in mo uui'.v. iiv burely tue wool nam oeen puneu 1 ii .1 1 nj over mine eyes all trie days or 1 1 . i t r my life and I -will kick myself forever.
