On hi way from the City of Mexico, Charlu Franci3 Adams, Jr., President of the Union Pacific Railway, stopped a few days in San-Francisco, and left soon after for Oregon, by the way of OgJen find the Oregon Short Li:ie. Mr.Adams says that his visit to Mexico was entirely one of pleasure and he 'd'd uot interest himself iu .the rail joad alliirs of that Republic, as he had not fcuilicient time to form any accurate opinions, even if he ha I wished to do so. Ho visited Cali fornia abouu seven years ugo while a inciueber of the Govern nn-ut Board of -Directors of the Union Pacific Railway, and his trip to Portland is for the pur pose of seeing the country anJ studying the resources, and investigating all mat ters pertaining to transcontinental tratU. Sunday we iod.i down as far a' Mr. II Giity's hors-Kick where we stopped for the nudit. The r.dlroad has made so many and gtei.t changes we hardly knew the place. Wl en, on our way down, wc arrivtd at Milton Station, wi saw Mr. Harney, Mr. and Mrsv Seafert aud son ready to go home over the track on a h ind-car. They had been visiting Mr. Broyles. We Hissed on down through Columbia City which wemcd unusually iuiet. We however had tak en supper at Mr. Bt nham's o?i tlie old Guiiim !ace. Mr.Benham's trops look ed exceedingly nourishing. The cherry tn eswere heavily loaned down, but the fruit though sweet was not large. We had a very enjoyable time. The county, road to the D; er luland orecinct is a ereat improvem nt on the old road. The railroad bridge at the Itig canyon this side of C. G' Ca pie's farm looked ery grand and imposi and the County ro.d bridge is also very substantial and convenient the grade lo the top of the Jkiy on each side being inodora'e. We -'fouii'l Mr. Girth's resi dence surrounded by fi'uit aud Uow r.- in pei -fuiou aiitl every thing interiorly mil exteriorly arranged m exquisite taste that In-tokrued th pains-taking husband and the skillful ami trusty housewife. . After a pleasant night" rest we went down as far as Mr. Bevis'. We think the views from the residen ces in that vicinitv leautiful und iirand in the extreme, and the lover of nature could reverfind a more enticing d wellini: jlace than there. On our way up we were baptised by a succession of show ers. Mr.Svvager is having his house tin ished by a cjirjH-nter. " We went out to Canaan to see Mr. Bumgurdner, who i clearing a farm in that - h cality. His sou was at work on the Claim of Mi. MiDond I, his brother-in law who is telegraph operator and ticket agent at the depot. The soil it Canaan appears to be rich. Many people have claims there, and a prosj.erous far ning commu nty will soon be established there. All kinds of crops on our route seemed to be plenty, but cash scarce. Mrs. Butngard iter's little daughter was quite sick with a bilious attack. The family of E'zy George have all excellent health. This wrll Ihj pleasing to their numerous friends, as they have been surely afflict ed iu times past by ili-heallh. There was quite an exciting scene on Monday i:; St. Helen; it appears tw. youths in La Centre-had been engaged in petty thievery, aud had 'decamped to Oregon soil. The -arresting 'officer fol lowed them, and after 'quite a tussle suc ceeded in capturing- one. The other took leg bail. Our sh nil declined to in terfere as there w ere no papers to show, having tfie fear of a vrii of habeas cor pus before 1iis eyes, but the W. T. man meant to have them spite of haleascor puses or anything of the kind. We un derstand the other returned to Lr. Cen tre, and both were sentenced $50 tine and 30 days in jail. Our son and daughter attended the picnic at Warren on Saturday. and had a -ery pleasant agreeable time. There w ere song, essays and dialogue:, to make the the time pass pleasantly. Mis. J. T. McNulty personated the ancient fe male from Bostmg and a little Brown girl kept the audience amused lyher childish and cunning ways. Mr. Gill gave the youngsters a boat ride which all enjoyed al.c" there was plenty to eat and that that was good and palatable. Songs were sung by Mrs. Hoyt, Miss Dora Copeland and others and the time slipped joyously away to the edification ofall. On Wednesday Mr. Ed. Henrici's lit tle daughter -No rah fell out of a swing at their lesidence on Sauvie's Island, and bioke her arm near the socket of the shoulder. 'They brought her down tp Dr. Moore's office, and he set the broken limb but thought it best for :hm to take the little sulerer to Portland for fear the limb would lie stiff unless extra care was taken. Dr. Moore wished a consultation wiih other surgeons he con sidered the case such a critical one. The little girl showed much heroism, and made very little complaint. - . , . .i Mrs. Edmonds has been to La Cam as. and reports that place in a flourishing condition, besides the paper n ill, a wcol len mill is about ready to go into opera tion, and a railroad is building. The cherry trees in that vicinity were over loaded with fruit, and the ground cov ered with those fallen to the earth. We have received Mrs. Duniway's cck-biated engraving entitled the Corona tion of Womanhood. It is large and very well executed in the main.. The following parties of Columbia County portraits iu it. Dr. Thomas Stewart, G. W. McBnde, James M tickle, John Dib blee and E. G. Adams. The Union Pacific and the Northern Pacific have made on arrangement with theO. R. fc N.
