Th:; lesson is one that should not be ls:t on tho public, and will, for a timo at e;u,t teach men that the point in business, wherein a friend i.s not required to fur nish ouohrrs and receipts for money handled and paid out, is one that it. is not safe for friendship to pass. Tele 'jrctnx. The circular of the O. It. k N. Co., to its employes long foreshadowed by ru mor, notifying th'.n of a reduction in wages, to take eiiVct cn the first of S.'p tember, was issued vestrrdav. The statement of -the company is that the step is reluctantly taken and is induced by the present depressed : tate of the transportation business. A willingness i) return to old wages upon the revival of business is foreshadowed. The wages of all Gaiters and employees in the river and sound division arc reduced in fair proportion. There ,is not the slighest evidence of a resistance to the reduction l-y a strike of the empleyes, although of curse, much dissatisfaction exists. There is a prospect that house rent and ail -other living expenses will be lowered accordingly, so that, for those whoa' the reduction did not catch in debt, with payments calculated up to the dollar on tho " installment plan," the diiTcrenc:' will not be as marked as it would have been a year ago, when rumors of reduc tion in salaries first began to be heard. There is r. somewhat concerted move ment among the em!6v"s of the O. It. k N. Co. below the position of mate to resist the sweeping reduction made in wages by the management in Boston. The boats, all w'ent out on time this moining, but all are running short-handed. It is thought that the matter will be satisfactorily adjusted in a few days Rivor transportation, when coining in conflict with railroads, takes a necessa rily subordinate position. These was never a more complete illustration of this fact than lias been shown by the decadence of tho river trade on the Columbia and Willamette within the past two years. Whether it.sj present I -.ncruishiuent will result in the complex: - fading out of the onca enormous trans portation business carried on by the line fleet of the O. S. N. Co., cr whether it will be succeeded in due time by some thing like its old prosperity, is a ques tion that a few years" wili decide. Tele jruni. ' A shot has at last told the burglary, that have been for .sometime infesting this city and East Portland, that there is danger in prowling about people's dwellings while good men sleep. Dr. Pilkiugton's shot gun did a host of citi zens service in last night's discharge. Thousands of empty threats and dozens of arrests would not do as much service to the public in checking the burglar mania that has had such a wide sweep as thii one load of buckshot, discharged at random and 1:1 the semi-darkness of u hall at midnight.. The circumstances of this death, if the wound proves fatal, as new seerr-s likely, are shocking, buf. the man who. with lib " feet swathed in towels, so he may step without i-oise," goes prowling around the bedrooms of honest sleepers at unseemly hours risks such a fate, an.l does not deserve a bet ter one.
