Tajor Aiams l):ar Sin California is moving on, and the Great Mussel Slouch country with Han ford for its center is furnishing its quota of the mo tive power that . propels the great ma chine. This famous Mussel Slough em braces an area, of over two hundred Square miles with Kings Iiivrr on the north and west, Tulare Lake on the south, lhe Plains on the east, and Han ford for its great business center. There Arc two other towns in this extent, (irangoville four miles north west and Lemore ten miles west of this place All of this Mussel Slough country is di vided up into farms of oe fourth sec tions and many less than that. It has only been settled about seven yeais, al though a few persons resided here prior to that time. The surface of the coun try is nearly level, sloping just enough to the south west and slightly undula ting, with the marks of several ancient water courses still remaining. The soil is sand and loam xvith spots of alkali, and requires a large amount of water to keep it moist and is never .muddy. This latter is an unknown prop erty here, something that an ex-webfooc -can appreciate especially if he came from the vicinity of Kosburg. An abun dance of water ean be had at an average depth of eight feet from the surface. The pirvolative ability of the soil is remarkable, and when the water is reached it i-s like coming to the surface of a lake. It is said by the wise ones to le a deposit from the mountains cu-ised by Kings River the Kaweah and other streams. It being some fortyjitules from when these streams leave the hills the depos it is very line and productive and over live hundred feet deep. The strata va ry a little yet showing their common origin. The surface is meandered by numerous ditches for irrigation leading frm these stream.- all over the country, traversing to a greater or less extent every quarter section; with a little calculation you can estimate the amount of must- 3 it has ta ken -to accomplish all this, it has all been done by the residents here. More anon. . M. Watts. LOCAL 27SWS When we were at Toledo on the 4th, we met Mr. Vaughn with his young -Jbabe which iio s&id he had stolen from its mother. He told us lie intended to send it to AValla Walla ; we asked no questions. Its mother Mrs. Maggie "Vaughn su.-picioning it was still in the vicinity o? Win'ock or Toledo, started ;dowrthere the other day, and succeeded in recovering her babe ; the little thing was overjoyed when in his mother's arms and tried to soy something she had learned it " sic him, sic him." This was meant for a dog belonging to Mrs. Vaughn which Vaughn had spirited a --wav. Mrs. Vaughn has started in for a divorce! She is a tine woman, always borne an irreproachable character, and respected by all her acquaintance. She is very amiable, kind-hearted, and for giving, and possesses all the womanly traits of character in an especial manner. We rode up with our family the other evening to R. S. Fuller-ton's. It was a -business call, and our family remained in the buggy, The track of the R R. ihad greatly changed the look of things. We were scarcely in the 'house ffive niin ntes before Mr. Fullerton with his char--acteristic hospitality passed out a fine lot of refreshments, berries, cream and suar just as the best class of people in -Missouri always do. Delle's organ i: of ihe same make as our daughter Blanche's Mr. " Fullerton has raised himself alone as line a family as ever was raised in Columbia County. He has been father and mother both, for his children, and they show themselves worthy of his kind care. The county road is much changed by the Railroad. Glcndye advises them down at Kulavn- to start a paper. He-says inve.t $G00, and make 63000. The Muckles started him in, and somebody has made about th ree thousand dollars out of pecket. i That is the way with most papers. It requires brains as well as 000. Auy Xool can start a .paper, but it takes a smart man to make it Win. We should ! call Glendye's advice a fool', fur he nev r made anything win. 0 lie can't make a living with an office all fitted up; iir.,t he had to tend a " oiler," and now ho nan wj .r- a. jcv. a, leafti, rus sign says t so. j j Mis. Utdkiii met with quite a severe accident on Wednesday. She rode in i to town with Mr. John Alexander. Wlien near J ude Moore's residence, she attempted to alight and caught her dress and was violently thrown to theground, and received a severe cut in the head which reached to the skull. Though bad ly stunned her womanly nature cropped out enough for her to pin up her dress which had been torn in the fall. In a semi-unconscioue state she walked down to G. Y. McIJride's store, where Miss Dr. Annie Merrill and lyron Caples tut oil the hair around the contusion and washed it and did all they could to alleviate lier distress till Dr. Stewart ar rived and dressed the wound. ! Mr. lflakesley took her to her residence on Milton Creek in his buggy. There was quite a disturbance in the j Sabbath School on the Day two weeks j ago. It was about the publication of the Sabbath School report. Mr. W. II. Copeland, the Secretary had sent it to the Columbian and the Deegles wanted it in the mist. Public opinion -seems to be all in favor of Mr. Copeland as far as we have learned. He offered to leave j it to the vote of the school which paper it f-hould be published in. To this we j understand the Deegles would not ac cede. Ihe mist we think has very tew subscribers in that vicinity. We are happy to state the affair has blown over, j and the Sa'jbath school is still running in good shape. j Weformed the acquaintance of Mr. Hartformcrly of Jefferson City, Mis souri, the other day through the intro duction of young Mr. Devis. We were struck with his appearance when we saw him, and wished an acquaintance. We were pleased with his conversation, and found him a whole-souled gentle man. He is a cousin of Genl. Joseph Lane.and shows he is of excellent stock, j Mr s A ues has returned from Young Bevis appeared very fiiendly to j East of the Mountains. He bought a us. He likes Major Adams, and no j line tract of aud m.ar Umatilla Land mistake. The Bevis family is one of ! ms. the best families iw Columbia County. JimmyWalsh, who is keeping a sa loon at the corner of D. and 9th. Streets Portland, is recuperating his health at Mr. Freeman's on "tho Scappoose. ! We and the Strachans were boating lumber at Fullerton's Landing ; he camejdown with twoof the young Free mans, and fixed up a mechanical contrivance by which he lightened our labors j very much. He has our thanks. Recollect he holds out at the cornrr:f D. and 9th. Streets. D. W. Prentice it Co.'s Musical Jour nal for June contains the following: Songs, " The Fairy Jane," " Sometimes," "Some Day," " My Queen," ( Valse ). The July number contains the " The Old Stone Mill" Song and Chorus, also " Must We Leave the Old Home, Moth- er? Instrumental 'music " Mulodie,' " Les Pierrots. (Valse. )"' Price, lOcts. per month, 75 cts. per year, published at 107 First Street, Portland, Oregon. om ,, .. -I The blasting on the railroad is verv severe, only a short distance from here, j It --shakes up the Colvmihax office much ly. We have been expecting stray piec es of rock, but none have come : as we look westward every little while we see a pillar like the ono the old Israelites saw as they crossed the desert to the promised land. j ... rr ! Mr. . H. hitney will, soon open a i J 1 i Darners and Jla-rdresf er s saloon in the corner of the Tom Elrington building on River Street. He will also have a boot blacking stand, for his little son at the same place. Mr. Whitney, is disabled on account of wounds received in the late unpleasantness and should receive the patronage of all. Mr. Shattuck set out a nice lunch i.ir us uie otner m-.i : ezc up , at Fullerton's Landing. She has al- ways treated u? with great kindness. We never had a truer friend or one we appreciate more. There is no hy pocrisy about her. We like those kind of true-hearted people. Lee and Dennis Berry have; been home on a visit to their mother and oth er friends. When at the Cascades Lee drives an engine,! and Dennis packs j tools for the workmen. Ihey are fine young men. Mrs. Ellen Perry: lias movod into the Martin house, ouo of the best in St. Helen. ' We received a call the other day from that gallant old engineer, Fitzgerald who was with Lieut. Lampson in his heroic river fights in the far South duriegthe Rebellion. Mr. Fitzgerald repeated a j history of one of the mof.t gallant -ex- ploits of the War in verse of his own composing. S. A. Miles and son Willie helped us unpack and set up our organ, for which they have many thanks. Mr. Miles is one of the most neighborly of men, and when he is a friend , to a man, he shows it in a manly way, in deeds as well as in words. i The switch at Columbia Citv; will soon W.omiletl. An engine will con- ! vev out tiet; to vvX the road in runnin" ord-v. 1 g JOSCE SAZK Lucy Miles is slowly, recovering. Yesterday morning we had two little showers. It is rumored Mr. Win. Long may they j live to enjoy it. j At Shintaffer's and Edmonds' Saloon j s a splendid billiard table. If you want to know how fine it is just look in and j J see for yourselves, it gives the saloon a splendid appearance.
