Tuesday we -took ,aiv family and ..tartqd for Toletlo, W. T. We went on loa.rJ .the Josejih .Kellogg, and expected .to go to Freepof.t, Vut finding the Tole do would riot go .up to Toledo on account .of the lowness of water in the Cowlitz we changfrd oir plans, aid concluded to stop at -Kajania, aud go over on the .cojca to Winlock 4th of July luorr.ing. AVe.accordingly got a room at Patterson's -hotel, and after the heat subsided, took . walk out to view the. scenery. Surely there is no more romantic' spot on earth .than Kalama. The air is delicious, and if a fqw pond wertr drained, it would be very healthy.: We visited tho places where the Episcopal and Methodist .Churches stand and the little dilapidat ed cfuietory at the roar of the JatUr, where we saw the marble stone of one -of New Hampshire's sons, Augustine L. Jeniins, of Portsmouth, X. II. In ouc inclosure for the dead was no stone but some beautiful roses swinging in the wind their censers over the loved and lost. If any on wants a taste of Switz erland in W. T. they should go to Ka Jama. This ought to be a fashionable resort, there are such fine hotels obtain able. It is easy 6f access, and ought to j flourish more than it does. "We met' Mr. -Close, 'and Mrs. Forsythc who has a .charming bate. She was delighted to meet us, and the pleasure was as great on our part. . Her husband is County Clerk of Cowlitz County, and is also partner as a merchant with Mr. Close, who was a gallant soldier of the late re bellion and is Countv Treasurer of Cow- m litz County. We also met Sheriff Jos--rph Smith, a former Major in the army. -Comegys and Vestal have sold ont, ai.d - 1 ? 4- V.MiwKwnif l fttt. T l f. o .a 5"ery pleasant polished gentlemen. We Jiad a nice room at the hotel. The Pat- j ierson children are the happiest children we ever saw, somebody is amusing, them all the time, also nlavinr tricks on them. x J o fio they are uncommonly sharp. We rose on the :norning of the 4th ad wrote our oration. We wanted one . tn intt fif iYtt tinio rl?v mirl nf--i iinn jnnd it just Jilted no every body suid af ter they heard it. We-enjoyed solid comfort' while writing it tho air was so invigorating and the room so pleasant. The engine that was to carry the train to the Sound was very gaily dbtkeci with flowers and flags. When the time came we were on board-, and Blanche anc I3ir ney had their first ride in the cars. I had sent a telegram to Mr. Johnson at -Toledo from Kalama the day before, ho when wo got off the train a commodious double-seated buggy was in waiting, and with a gallant Kenluckian for a. -driver, we were soon whirling along through the magnificent farms of Cowlitz Prairie to the celebration grounds about a quar ter of a mile out of the city of Toledo. The grounds were a splendid grove of j vine maple principally. We passed through an outside grouping of gaily ires5od Indians and on the grounds proper .met a big assembly of gentle men and ladies. There were some of xhe finest looking gentlemen we ever met, .and brilliantly and splendidly dressed ladies. It "would fuo well for some people around here who have a big head -of conceit of their own importance to truce oui, ana see now uig people there are on the outside. Among those who A "1 Al 1 . Most joyously greeted us, were Mr. Ifan- -cock and family. A splendid collation was soon arranged for us, as almost all jhad eaten their lunches. In a short time :-the literary exercises of the day com jiiencecL On a platform reared for danc ing the speakers of the day took their j stand. Miss McClure of East Portland read the Declaration tf Independence in a -clear sonorous voice with choice enunci ation and intonation. She was dressed iu the. most refined taste, and showed he vas a lady of culture, and high no ble purpewo. Then the choir sang America Then the Major did his hest, and the audience listened with the ot respectful attention. There was jiot a solitary sound to be heard from the audience except the innocent prat tle of aoiae babes whom their mothers rainjy attempted to hush. Next was sung " The Star Spangled Banner," and soon the Mulligan Guards appeared, and with grotesque costumes and dances en tireaed the occasion. Then came dancr fnj on the platform for an hour or jtwo, pUt quondam driver being caller on the occaetoo. we were piloted to town by our gallant ilarBhal, Birney riding his horse decked with flags. Lodgings were secured tts At Hdaire rfajlett's hotel, .where partook of a very choice sup- per and breakfast ooqked in true Pasis 'style. . Mr. Halted wjw born in Montre- al and his wifo in Jljinoia, and they are very fino looking as w.ell as agreeable, they have a very- beaut if id family, We there met Mr. Vinecni, a young Virgin. nlan, j very intelligent and agreeable, who fttcnde.d the celebration with a Miss Mathieux of a pioneer Cowlitz fam ily. We received every attention while at Toledo. Mr. Dubeau who keeps store at the old stand of Woods ii Caples was very polite and attentive. We met a young man of Irish parentage from "New York, who said he was perfectly delight ed to hoar just such aa oration as they would have in New York City, in Wash ington Territory. He ia'n machinist by trade, and has taken up a ranch near by. We. had met on the celebration ground a Mr. Mitchell, Mr, Boone, a descendant of Daniel Boone, Dr. Livingston, a near relative of the great African explorer, and many other distinguished gentlemen. Our expenses were liberally paid; we got many new subscribers, and went to Winlock in a large easy buckboard, Mr. Koontz acting as equerry and guide, and to take the buckboard back; we came by a different route than we went, and so had a grand glimpso of the magnificent country. At Winlock Capt. E, L- Finch an old Pioneer from Central New York, showed us his splendid dancing hall, ho tel and store. There had been just the finest kind of a dance and supper at $Vinlock on the 4th. The Captain is well fixed, and a thorough go-ahead gen tleman, he has large land interests, and may yet be a millionaire. We met Dr. Padget one of the own ers of the Toledo town-site, tine old time genial gentleman, the P. M. at Winlock, an uu ile by marriage, of J udge Adams of Portland. . We arrived home by car and steam boat, getting a splendid dinner on the j ?. A. Thoiijison, with steward very at tentive. Thus ended our 4th of July. LOCAL HEWS Yesterday Judge Blanchard of Rai nier Mas up with his beautiful little steamer the 'John- West. He invited us down to inspect its machinery and inte- rior arrangement, and we found it fitted up for use as veil as beauty just to a dot. The Judge has been so busy he had not time to even celebrate the 4th. He has been driving piles for wharves an Up aml down the river to prepare for the mighty activity that this region of country is inaugurating. Surely the bu siness community could ill afford to lose so energetic and active a man as Dean Blanchard A. W. Berry it Co. by the Judge sent us up a can of Smoked Cau dle Fish and one of Smoked Halibut. This Company are meeting with great success, and turning the resources of the Columbia River to good account to them selves as well as others. We sampled some of smoked Halibut, and found it very fine. Leafier Johnson has a big run of bu siness at Toledo. He is just jerow.ded to death with work, and is very popular, lie has built a fine shop, and his family are sharing in his prosperity. Mr. John son came of an excellent family, and no persons in Columbia County were more respected than his father and mother lately deceased. It does our heart good io sec the prosperity of those we have known and "respected in days gone by. Mr. Johnsoh is one of Nature's noble men. He was Marshal on the 4th. and acquitted himself in a distinguished man ner. Dr. Boyce, son of an old pioneer Doctor of Washington County has a successful practise at Toledo, and is flourishing in business. He is married to a charming lady of Goldendafe, and has gathered in his little children who have been attending school at Portland. jye nevcr a itter man or ono m0re j lir;nno than th Doctor. He has built quite extensively, and is laying the foundation and deep. of a great practise broad Mr, G. Hv Hwcock ha one of' the finest places in Lewis - County. It will soon be worth $40.00. He is engineer for a mill near by staited by Mr. Allen, an enterprising man 'J a tely arrived who has come to mutually enrich himself and the County in wMch he dwells. It was the best lick ever Hancock, did in his life when he cut loose from the Muckles. He is very popular, and would make a No. 1 Sheriff for Lewis County. Our old friend Mike Dunegan has his brother in with him, and is the same old glorious Mike. He is liked by all and is just coining money. Mike is one of our best friends and did everything he could to make our stay agreeable. To ledo is just booming, and all who had faith in its future are booming top The la?t lot lajd off is; sold, and there in jew work for the surreyors. Mr Stopper is doing a successful bus.- I lne M a h.oemaker and boot-maker. jnaeetj every ousiness man is prospering. The Chinamen on the railroad "got some of their tents i burnt up the other j night by firing an old log. There was j a pitched battle about it, clubs, rocks, ! fists, tools, &c. tc coruiug into play, j Wluether any werp kjlJod we .did not ' hear. The otlur evening when going to Port land we met Captain Philip Johnson of Astoria, a cousin of our first wife. The Captain is an old pioneer, first settled on the Jewett place on Sauvie's Island. He has lost all his children but one and a sweet little -granddaughter. We had good time talking about Newburvport, nd the days of auld lang syne. He is rich, and deserves his success. We promised hioi a visit We met on the steamer Kellogg, while on our way to Toledo, Mrs. Randall, formerly from Moultonborougb, New Hampshire. Her husband "was killed by a log, and she lives with her son-in law, Barber, School Superintendent of Cowlitz County. She was in poor liealth but appeared like a perfect lady, digni fied and refined. We met on the cars as we went to Winlock the Rev. Mr. Devore, one of our Pioneer Methodist Preachers, and enjoyed his society much.. His residence is Tacoma. He intends to visit at St. Helen and preach. He is an able man, and will secure a big crowd, Hiram Van Blaracom came in from Nehalem lately in G hours, and informs us the railroad survey of the Forest Grove and Astoria R. 11. has reached Fishhawk. He has been working on his ranch, one of the best in Nehalem Yal-lev. On our way back from our 4th at To ledo, W. T. we met Professor Powell, President of the Seattle University. He looked in fine health, and enquired par ticularly about A. H. Blakesly, S. A, Miles, Mrs. N. florae, and others. . e : Mr. W. H. Whitney's pension has been increased to 12 dollars per montli. If ever a pension was deserved it was in Whitney's case. It is a wondel how he can live at all with such a fracture in his head. G. W. McBride wishes to inform his debtors that he intends to go out of bu siness by tho first of August, and wants them to settle up and that without fur ther delay. - Mr. Nelson Hoyt showed us the pho tograph of Annie's husband of Pomona, Cal. He is a fine intelligent looking gentleman named Hiram McComas. Simpson our artist has grained ihe splendid front doors of Blakesley's new hotel in genuine artistic style. What ever he touches, he beautifies. W saw a tent set up back of G, W. McBride's store the othr day for camp ing purpose. It was ample, and would accommodate many. . . - Glendye when down the river offered the mist for C months for f0 cts. Cheap as dirt and abouc as dry as dirt. is now. We shall print the aiile Sunday School report of Mr. Win. Copeland, next week. We shajl publish our oration delivered at Toledo in next week's paper. Notice of Application to Purchase Timber I,a"i.
