A MELANCHOLY TALE. The twinkling stars, like drops of gold, Were shudding in the ekiee, The evening breeze in scents unrolled. And from the drv, dark, $leepy mold Came the cricket's thrilling cries. A stillness hung o'er the melon paten, A stiff, stark, silent still; And a little bov whose after hatch Betrayed a wealth of lent and thatch Crept softly up the hill. The very dew drops seem to hang In wondering suspense, The cricket's voice no longer rang. As up the hill that urchin sprang, And wafted o'er the sence. Across that fence the urchin flops Once more the cricket's din Leaps up to meet the golden drops, Where is that boy? The bulldog's chop? Suggest'Inquire within!'' Stirring Up Le?al Business. A natty young lawyer and an elderly client were settling np their affairs in the Prothonotary's office one day. When everything was arranged the old man, "with a benevolent smile, threw down a five-cent piece, remarking, "The fee was small; treat yourself to a glass of beer." The attorney picked np the coin coolly, put it in his vest pocket and bowed his thanks to his gracious patron. A white haired counsellor standing by the re porter laughed ironically. "Oh, the dignity of the bar!" he cried. In the old days a respectable young man start ing out in law would have resented such patronage as an insult. . A Philadelphia lawyer then would never assent to be treated as a boots. The bar is crowded now. The scramble for employment is harrowing, and practices are tolerated that years ago would have been spurned. The infected sheep would have been marked and cut off from the flock, so that you might know them. You can count on your fingers all the men at the bar stigmatized as shysters, not because tha spirit of petti-fogging: does not flour ish, not because the line between the . dignified and the vulgar lawyer is less clearly marked than before. But don't think I'm talking of the entire bar in this sour way. As a whole it is still no doubt the grandest bar in the country; there are scores of the old names still ex tant. But how long will the old reputa tion be able to withstand the sweeping tide of new practices? That is the ques tion. "I actually know," and the old man's eyes glowed with feeling. "I actually know a lawyer of good standing who has in his employ a negro 'runner.' The colored man has a wagon stand near a magistrate's office. He attends the hear ings and marks the defendants who will be lik ly to require the services of an attorney. He ingratiates himself into their confidence and tows them around to his legal employer. He receives one third of the fee as a commission for his services. He has a hold in another way; he owns two or three properties, and when his acquaintances get into prison he enters security for them if they will be likely to come up when wanted and will agree to retain his lawyer." "Then I know attorneys who cut out the lists of accidents printed in the ' newspapers and send communications to the persons interested, suggesting suits for damages. Just after the fire at the Randolph Mills, Kensington was speckled with lawyers' cards. Bless my soul, they say, yoa might have paved a block with them." " 'Dock angels,' I believe, are disap pearing. These were the fellows who hovered about the dock in the Quarter Sessions, asking the prisoners whether they did not wish a lawyer and how much they had to pay for one. Every thing was welcome from a ten dollar bill to an oid valise. I knew a man who be came quite wealthy at the practice." "Have you heard of the great divorce case?" "Never." "It is the newest thing about which gulled lawers are laughing at each other. It is quite fair, but only shows how de lighted even established lawyers are to get a good thing in these sad days. A middleaged German, with a beard and eye-glasses and as grave as a Chinese professor, comes round to your office and says that he has been seDt to you by one of your best clients for advice upon a divorce matter. It is a woman who has commissioned him, a dear friend. She liveiMtt Roxborough. Her life has been very sad. Her husband deserted her two years ago and actually has been audacious enough to open a grocer's shop in Camden with another woman. You say it is a clear case; that there will be no difficulty about obtaining a di vorce. The man overwhelms you with thanks; his dear friend will be delighted; he will convey the news to her at once; good-bye till to-morrow. In a few mo ments he comes back with an empty pocketbook in his hand. He is very sory, but he did not forsee that he would have to go to Roxborough that day, and he really has no change. You are affable. You will be delighted to assist him, you say, and hand hici a dollar. He vows, with tears in his eyes, that he will pay you, with interest, to-morrow and you never see him again. They say that Peirce Archer, J iv, and Michael Arnold and a score of other fellows were floored. And don't mention it, but really I was taken in myself for fifty cents. My writ is ready; good-bye." Philadelphia Times. Reporters, Anelent and Modern. In the oourse of a sermon delivered Sunday on "Ancient" Reporters," to wit: the twelve men whom Moses sent out to see what sort of country the " Promised Land" was, the preacher took occasion to note the great improvement that has taken place in the business of rexorting. Of the dozen men selected Dy Moses ten lost heart, but, said the preacher, "it would be very difficult in this our day to get twelve reporters together ten of whom would be found to be faint-hearted. Reporters in these days are found to be very bold and persistent men, afraid to interview neither a little Canaanite nor a i m a i mt i giant son oi ad&k. xne reporters oi the Herald have made their way into the palaces of kings and khedives, and have penetrated the jungles of Africa and the eternal frosts of the north." All of this is entirely true. If the; reporter of the present day has any fear, he is remark ably skilful at concealing it, for the most dangerous duty is always the most popu lar. Scores of reporters wanted to go to the Arctic with the j Jeannette, and hundreds today would far rather be at Alexandria, with the chance of being knocked to pieces by a shell from nu ironclad or stabbed by a fanati cal Mussulman, than at Coney Island, Long Branch or Saratoga. It is quite possible, however, that the Hebrew re porters were not the best men that might have been selected foj their "detail." Moses was in some respects a man of marvelous ability; he J turned walking canes into snakes, got an immense excur sion party across the .Red sea without paying a cent for ferriage, and brought his people out of Egypt with all their baggage, which is more than England and France have been able to do recently; but the defection of ten1 or twelve report ers prove conclusively that he would have failed lamentably as a managing editor of a live daily newspaper. If his men had been of the stuff of which mtodern reporters are made, they would not have left Jericho in a basket let down from the roof of an improper place of resort; they would have gone boldly to the mayor, demanded safe cpnduct, and come away by special camel train, and with note books filled at interviews of every body in the town that was worth talking to; they would also have brought an ur gent appeal to Moses for an assortment of missionaries, rum and military arms. But as heretofore hinted, Moses had no experience in the important work of se lecting special correspondents. N. Y. Herald. J Why Hre Boss Hoofs the Best? A poetess warbles, "I would that the summer was over."
