.DALLAS, SATURDAY, APRIL 19 TUB INCBCASING WEAITII OP . TUB WORLD. We are at present in such a stage of the development of the industry of all civilised nations that the increase in producing capacity far outstrips increase of population, so that the amount produced and consumed ou an average by every:; person far -exceeds in quantity and Talaa that winch was ever before known: It should not be lost tight of that only food.driuk, fuel, and clothing are entirely consumed, but that all the other products of industry ere utilised for building and - manufac turing, by which operations nothing in tealitydisappears; biitj on the contrary, the value of the manufactured material U increased. - Thus the stone and tim ber are transformed into dwellings and furniture, the iron , railroads engines and steamships. and "the products of metallurgy into all kinds of tools and machinery, all much mort valuable than the material used to pro duce them; so thatjn their case the value of property is raised by two stepsj first by - the prod actions of the ' jaw material, second, by the use of this in making the objects desired. Even the fuel cosomed under the steam boiler of a manufactory gives more than its equivalent in the products of the manu facture; and who will deny that the value of the development of human society is not worth a great deal more than the value of the food and other necessaries consumed by tho human race? Therefore, strictly speaking even in this case nothing can be con sidered lost but humanity in general is the constant gainer. So the workman who earns his wages gives the products of his labor back to hh employers, a value surpassing that of his earnings if this was not so, he would not have been employed; and thus the workman has, besides earning a living for himself and his household, contributes his share to the increase of the wealth of the world. - Even the Chineman who after several years of toil here, returns to his native home, carrying some of his earnings with him, if looked at from this point gof view, leaves behind him in the results of his labors a greater value than all that he can posibly'carry off; he has thus been a benefit to us and has the full right to go where he pleases. If we look at .the statistics of the increase of productive capacity in various branches among different nation we are especially struck at the develop ment that has taken place during the last decade. Let us, for instance, take the single article of iion. In United 8tates, in 1860 it was confined to hall m million tuns, while in 1870 it was increased to over two millions tuns, employing 150,000 workmen; while 850,000 men are employed to work this iron into all kinds or machines, etc., making one millon men employed by the iron industry alone. The value of the raw material is estimated at 200, 000,000, increasing by further labor $1,000,000,000. The prodution of steel manufactured in Germany is still more startling; 1860 only 250 tuns of manufactured steel, worth three millions of dollars, was produced by 4,000 workmen, while in 1870, 2,000 tuns, worth twenty millions of dollars, was the result of the labor of 14,000 workmen. ' ; Let us take a totally different branch cheese; in 1853 one million pounds of cheese were exported from here to England and in 1870 seven million pounds. The state of New York alone has now nearly 1,000 cheese manufac tones which use the milk of more than 250,000 cows making therefrom 80,- 000,000 pounds of cheese, 'which is 1,000 pounds of cheese to every three cows. The cheese production of the whole United States is now over 1;000, 000,000 pounds, of which 60,000,000 are exported. England exports scarcely 3,000,000 pounds, while little Holland, which used to bo the principle cheese producing country of tho world exports at present 25,000,000 pounds This latter fact suggests the extent which the cheese production of the United States may reach in the course of years, and the wealth which its exportation will bring back, as jthe. Hollanders used to boast that their cheese production alone was more var uable and reliable than a gold mine, very few of which surpassed the Dutch ehecsc in profits realized. We . could easily! fill many pages with other illustrations of the immense increase ot the production which, as it continually far outstrips the increase in population, cannot fail to increase the urn total of valuablo property. This view of productive capacity and its results is the best; argument against the conservative class "of people who sometimes raise their voice agaiost useful invention and new patents, under pretext that such improvements often take tha bread out ot tho mouth of the workmen, who are unable to compete; with" hand , labor against ma chine labor. Experienae lias' proved that all such fears .are groundless, and in every case have the machines which increase production been a blessing in the end, giving more labor and higher to those using them than they wages could obtain ' by their unimproved methods and much smaller productive capacities. So since the art of print iog has superseded manual copying, there are probable a thousand printers for ever manuscript writer of olden times ; when a recent period the sewing macinc sueprseded a great many ot the mast tedious duties ; cf the seam tress, the prophecy that its use would im poverish a large class of women who made their living by sewing was not fulfilled. On the contrary, the sewing machine has been a benefit all round : and so it must be with every invention which enlarges the total amount of the valuable products, of labor, and there fore contributes it. share to the increase of the world's wealth. THE DETJIOIT HIVCK TIJXXF.I.S, We learn that work upon this great enterprise has been indefinitely sua pended, for lacks of funds, and the expected union of Canada and the United States by the bonds of an underground railway, is for the present abandoned. This is a great pity, pecially as much work had already been done. The original plan contemplated the connection of the Great Western Railway of Caoada with the Michigan Central Railway, at Detroit, Michigan by means of two independent circular tnnnela.of masonry, each la feet in diameter, extcntcd by boring under tho bed of the river. Each tunnel was to have been ,8,508 fect in length. The preliminary work consisted m drifting a small tunnel 5 fect in dianic- terj intended as a drain for tho two larger works, and it is upon this small tunnel that considerable labor has been expended. Hcadiug were made on both sides of the river, and, up to a recent date when orders were given to stop, these headings had been car ried 1,700 fcoct in all, or 1,220 fect on the American side and 480 feet on Canadian side.
