We cannot emphasize too strongly this grace which pinches selfishness. I care not how orthodox is a man's creed, or how eloquent may be his prayers in public, if he has never learned to say "do" to the demands of fashion, and pride, and luxury, he is but a sorry specimen of the Christ's man. T. C. Cxiyler. A peaceful conscience and a content ed mind arc the principal elements of happiness. Without intelligence men know not what government means, and so cannot be governed reasonably, and by such motives as our form of government re quires. Without morality man has not a character safe for the family and neighborhood ; regards not the rights of his species; therefore morality must be enjoyed by the State, and is essen tial, like intelligence- to the support of good government.
