CHICAGO.
BY It. CLARIC.
$ire ! Lond clanged the tolling bell,
And like tho scan tnad, rolling swell,
Or serpent? tongues' contagious blast,
Or day of judgments trumpet's blast,
Devouring demon's heated breath,
Tho work commenced : destruction, death.
Fire! The miser to hi coffers tied,
As rouud about a light is shed ;
A lflrid glare lie seized his gains ;
He staggers forth the fire it reigus
' I suffocate," he faintly cried
He fell, and on his treasure died.
Fire ! And from his bed of case,
The belli! glare the rich man sees )
He staggers madly ; 'ti in vajn ;
His wealth about n aches lain ;
Years of toil isswept away
lit tuis semi judgment day.
Fire ! And 'mid the throng; to roam,
i'iie tender maiden from her homo
Is driven. Oh, God ! can this be just,
And man-fcrmcd demons teeming o'er with lust?
Will hell not break them on the wheel of shame,
An J damn them deep, amid consuming dame ?
Fire ! An 1 nations heard the call j
Aud with their aid ubpelled tho pall.
Blessed charity w ill aid thy rise ;
Will unite again thy rudely pundered ties ;
Cause bore to o'er thy blackened ruins smile
Cause flowers to bloom from out thy fuueral
pile. I

or may not be blessed, as the case may
be j but the poor in spirit are always
blessed, and we have Christ's authority
for so saying. Theirs is a poverty which
is better than wealth ; in fact, it is a
poverty which indicates the possession
of the truest of all riches. Spurgeon,
A gentle happiness is favorable to
virtue and to morality, as excessive ex

are favorable to murmurings, and to re

please his neighbor in good things, is
actually rnakiug his neighbor a better
man by making him a happier man.
Heecher.
We cannot emphasize too strongly
this grace which pinches selfishness. I
care not how orthodox is a man's creed,
or how eloquent may be his prayers in
public, if he has never learned to say
"do" to the demands of fashion, and
pride, and luxury, he is but a sorry
specimen of the Christ's man. T. C.

A peaceful conscience and a content

happiness. The cross of Christ, and
the promise of God, are designed to;

rest short of them. Anxiety about life

Men are like passengers in a ship.
So long as the weather is prosperous, it
seems all well enough to them. But
life is a voyage never made without
storms ; and what our hope is worth,
and what our faith is worth, cannot be
determined by what we experience in
sunshine or calm, in days of prosperity.
Beecher.
Justice is the great interest of man

Without intelligence men know not
what government means, and so cannot
be governed reasonably, and by such
motives as our form of government re
quires. Without morality man has not
a character safe for the family and
neighborhood ; regards not the rights
of his species; therefore morality must
be enjoyed by the State, and is essen
tial, like intelligence- to the support of
good government. Without religion a
man has no idea of the source and sae
redness of the government; fearing not:
God, ho is likely to disregard man.
