Newman has on hand a novelty in the shape of a churn. A gearing is attached to the dash of a common churn, and turned by a .crank. The weight of tho da-:h h balanced by .a. ball attached to a turning rod, through one end of which works a pif-ton, which ruoves the dash. It is simple, and by those who have ijise! it declared the best churn extant. We have been tariffed a book, entitled f1 Christian Progress," written by the Rev. V. Jolly, for perusal. The work i well written, and the author's idea, though rather unique, are finely expressed, nnd in many instances well authenticated. Hi.-) argument concerning the authenticity of the Rible are clear and forcible, and commend themselves to the gen eral reader. We cannot now give a general synopsis of the work, but would advice all who wish to be edified and instructed to give it a .careful reading. While, of course, wc cannot expect that everyone who read it will endorse all it pays, yet, " we can prove all things, nlid hold fast to that which is good." Dr. J. C. The llou.-i of Commons on the Election Bid. d'hid stone opposed the various amendments. A division was had on the pioro ition that the election expenses he paid out of local taxation, which resulted in a majority of nine six against the (lov ermnent. A meeting was held to night in Trafalgar square, to protect against allowance to Prince Arthur. Five thousand persons wrere present, and were addressed at different points. There was much excitement, and the entire police force were out. The po lice seized a Communist flag carried by one of the clubs. Armed demonstra tions, and some fighting arc reported, and some arrests were made. Tin inceting adjourned ju disorder, and the crowd was dispersed by the police. The Government to-day prohibited the meeting in Trafalgar Square, and massed the police and soldiery t.ure to prevent the Assembly, but, alarmed at the threating aspect of the populace, the force was withdrawn and a meeting held without molestation, and violent revolutionary sen ti men ts were expressed. Washington, August 1. At a Cab inet meeting to day it was decided to tender to Charles Francis Adams the appointment of arbitrator on the part of United States, to Meet at Geneva with thoo of other nations, for iho settlement of the Alalma clairrjs nnder the treaty of Washington.
