Walla Walla is now the richest and most populous county in Washington Territory, and in natural resources is not excelled by any equal area in this or any other section of the United States. It is now rapidly filling up with emigrants from Oregon and the Atlantic States. With a railroad con nectton with the Northern Pacific Rail road, or even with the navigable waters of the Columbia River, from the head of the valley, opening a ready markit for its abundant crops of wheat, corn, fruit and other products, there is no part of the far-famed Willamette Vul ley which could count upon a more brilliant future. Walla Walla is fortu nate in having among its representative citizens many men of intelligence and public spirit, who will not permit their advantages to be forfeited. A Wonderful Invention. There is no doubt but that we are upon the eve of a new era in the manufacture of woolen fabrics, when every family in the land can supyly itself by its own industry with woolen cloths, of every description, and of every degree of fineness and elegance, and when there will be no excuse for going otherwise than well, and even elegantly clad. The mechanism which is to produce this change in the history of woolen manufactories is a marvellous inven tion, which has already excited the admiration of capable judges of its merits in some of the leading manufac turing centres of New England, and which has been on exhibition for the past week in this city. It is an elegant and simply constructed machine. The gpace occupied by it is five feet eight inches by five fret. That is the ex treme length and breadth of tho loom. It is very easily mauaged, one girl tending four looms, without the aid of section hands. The rapidity with which it works is something miraculous, a sin gle loom producing the enormous quan tity of 250 yards of cloth in one day, while the best ordinary loom produces 25 yards. -Boston Courier. Wheat ia beginning to bead in illi, sou?. A TOUCH OF LIFI2. A few nights since the passengers u a crowded street car were startled by the soft cooing of a couple in one cor ner. A blue veil hid the lady's faco, and the geutleman V hands were playing nervously with its folds. " You love me then T" they heard him say. The rapid reply was in a tone less loud, but its accent was as tender as heart could wish " I, have loved you so long," the swain coutinued, and I have been afraid to involve the sweet hopes that ar. now revolving themselves into eternity.' Wa you afraid of pa?" " No, but of yu." " Why should you be afraid of me?" " Because it seemed so impossible that you could love me." Why?" "I am homely j my face is not handsome; I have nothing that attracts the love of women." " Rut you aro rich," the lady archly replied. Passibly so, but not very," Tho conversation had by this time grown absorbingly interesting, and all ears were listening in the crowded car. "Would you marry me if I were poor ?" " How. can you ask me- am I so mercenary ?" No, but 90 many are." There was a momentary silence, and then the whispered conversation was resumed with mutual confession. In plain words, both acknowledged a re semblance to Job's turkey neither of them had a cent. They would commence their married life very much as they began the world with nothing. Their mutual confes sion was evidently a damper on their enthusiasm. They were silent. The lady cast furtive glanees at the swain, and at last murmured audibly : I'm -too young to marry." The tone was disappointed. It had a hesitating accent about it that meant more than the language. Rut the an swer came heartily, bluff aud to the point : "So am I." u We've both been mistaken." And so they had. They left the car quietly. The question of marriage was thoroughly understood. There was to to no wedding. j -- .- .-. IIlDDKN TtUI.uaUK FoUS! IN Maine. It was baloon-shaped, of a red color, with the pointed end toward the earth, upon reaching which an explosion took place injuring the roofs of several huts, and knocking down a fence for about 500 yards. Among the stones heaped around by this mrolite were found re cently, dead fishes of different species, which are supposed to have been lifted out of the river and dashed ugainst the stones. Similar events happened near Huacochuila and Atucachi, causing great fright to the people. Modern Economy-.
