The Yankee Factory piRLS.--In one of the factories in Maine, re cently, the proprietors reduced the wages, whereupon there was a general determination to strike; and as they were obliged to give a month's notice before quitting work, they had mean while issued a circular , to the world at large, in which is the following interest ing paragraph : We arenow working out our notice can turn our hand to most any thing dou't like to be idle but determined not to work for nothing where folks can afford to pay. Who wants help f We can make bonnets, dresses, puddings, pies and cakes ; patch, darn, knit, roat, stew and fry ; make butter and cheese; milk cows, feed chickens and hoe corn ; sweep out the kitcheu, put the parlor to rights, make beds, split wood, kimllc tires, wash and iron, besides being reuiark;ib!y fond of babies; ioTact can d anything the most accomplished housewife i capable of doing, not forgetting the scolding on Mondays and Saturdays ; for specimens of spirit will refer you to our overseer. Speak quick. Black eyes, fair foreheads, clustering locks, beaqtiful as a Hebe; can sing like a seraph and smile . moat bewitchingly ; and elderly gentlemen in want of a good housekeeper, or a nice young mfsn in want of a wife wijling to sustain either character; in fact we are in the market. W ho bids ? Going, Going. Gone ! Who's the lucky mau V y Labor Conducive to Long Life. In view of the short duration of life entailed by some occupations, it must be regarded as a consoling, yet a sub lime fact, that labor in general, docs not tend to shorten life , but, on the con trary, by strengthening health, length ens life ; while on the other hand, idle pess and luxury arc productive of the same results as the most unhealthy occupations. Dr. Guy, an Englishman, in calculating the average duration of life among the wealthy classes, arrived at the. very surprising result with 're gard to adults, that the higher the po sition in the social scale, the more un-e limited their means, the less the proba bility of a long life. We have so long been accustomed to consider the possession of riches as the best guarantee for physical welfare, that many will be surprised to hear thit the probability of the duration of life les fens, with regard to adults in each class of the population, in the same degree as the beneficial impulse for occupation is lacking. If a person who for a long time has lived in active life retires from business, it may be taken for granted, with a probability of ten to one, that he had seized the most effective means J,o shorten life. We may smile at the eoapmaker who, after having formally retired from business, went, neverthe less, on each day of soap boiling in his workshop; but it must also be acknow ledged that his instict did not mislead him. Of all conditions of life, idleness is hardest for nature to combat; and this is especially true of persons who have aecustoraea themselves to a busy Ufa. A dandy entered a stationer's shop, god with a very consequential air, in Anlred. f'lfati vnn a (oiv -mi ma rT lnf ter paper of the very best rate, for a Rem man to, write lub letters on?" "Yes," wag the reply, "how many will you have I 'spose," said he, -my tay at do Springs may be about two or tforce weeks. Givo enough quires to write four letters." Facts and fancies. A cereous matter Bees-wax. . Switch tenders hair pins. A dead language obituaries. u Well, there is something in that?? as the mau said when he tried to put on his .boot with a kitten iu it. l What is home without a mother?" as the young lady said when ? she sent the old lady to chop wood. A noble lloman -being asked why he had put away his wife, she being beau tiful and rich, ho stretched forth his foot, and showed .his buskin. 44 Is not this." kiid lie, a handsome and com- plotc sihe -yet. no man but myself knows where it pinches me. A poetical cor'rsspondent of the Lim erick .Kxiimiuer having commenced some p:iiouate stauzas, addressed to Mis.s Hay.-, wijh' the words': "Sweet minstrel! let me hang upon thylips," kindly informs us in a note that the expression is. put "purely metapho rical." , What a retiring young man I An Kuuli-shman observed a stone roll down a staircase. It bumped on every stair till it came to the bottom; there of course'it rested. " That stone," said he, "resembles the national debt of my country; it has bumped on every grade of the commuuity, butits weight rests on the lowest.' "Ah, Eliza," said a Sunday-school teacher, "you should not waste precious time curling your hair; il God intended it to be curled, he would curl it fr you." "Indeed," said the witty maid, "I must differ with you; when I was an infant, he curled it for me, but now I am grown up, he thinks I am able to do i myself." A young Scotch girl inquired of a gentlemau, in broad Gaelic, the road to Iretnont House. He desired her to foilohiui, and asked her how long since she arrived from Soctland; "Sax Weeks yer honor." On her arrival at destina tion, she very cooly inquired : 4Noo, sir wal ye jast tell me hoo ye kenned I was frae Soctlau ?" A man of learning was complaining to Voltaire that few followers relished the beauties of Shacespere. Sir," re- pled the wit, "bad trunshtions torment and vex them, and prevent them under, standing your great dram tttst. A blind. sir, cannot perceive the neautscs of the nwe ; he only picks his fingers with the thorns. A servant irirl, the other day. hear in that a certain advertiser would be happy to irive the character of any person on the rc-eipt of a lock ot hair and so many postijgo stamps, aetu illy cut off i her fiuest curls and scut them through the pot, with a request that he woult give her such a character as would enable her to get a better p'acc thau the one she had. A lecturer at Preston on the English language, 3Ir. J. G. Cope, spoke of Mm? de-Saxonising tendencies : The affection of Greek and French termin ology h.id attained a nauseous extreme; we were killed with ennui, we wanted something distingue, we dressed a la mode, and so on. Then, as to Greek name-; and a more dignified sort ofhnr- ly-gurdy was embalmed in the pompous appellation of gastrodiaphauic. A little boy named Knight, who re cently entered "a mission school New London, was told by his teacher that he must be a good boy, and wlien he died he would go to Heaven. The little fel low was pleased with the prospect, and promised to be the best kind of a boy. The next Sunday ho appeared in his place, looking sorrowful, and the teach er asked him if he had been a good by. ' Yes" he replied, "I've tried to bo good, but it's no use. The boys say I can't go to Heaven if I am ever so good. "Why do the boys say that?""asked the teacher. " they say, replied the boy, with the utmost simplicity, " there'll be rjjo nfjhl: there. The Bachelor Juror. A gentle man who is rather given to story tell ing, relates the following : hen I was a young man I spent several years in the South, residing for a while at Port Hudson on the Missis sippi River. A great deal of litigation was going on thereabout that time, and it was not always an easy matter to ob tain' a jury. One day 1 was summon ed to get excused. On my name being called I informed his honor, the Judge, that I was not, a freeholder, and therefore not qualified to serve. "I am stopping'for the time being at Port Hudson.". "You board at the hotel I presume?" "I take roy meals, but lnvc rooms in another part of the town whero I lodge." "So you kiep bachelor s hall f 'Yes, sir." . ' "How long have you lived in that manner ?" "About six months." "I think you are qualified," gravely remarked the judge ; "for I have never known a man to keep bachelors hall tho length of time you name who had not dirt enough in his room to make him a freeholder Tho Court docs pot excuse you." .
