The Printers Toil.
Clow, ye stormy winds of wintor;
Drive the chilly, drifting snoW,
XJlosely boused, the busy printed
Heeds not how the winds may blow.
Click, Click, bis type go dropping,
; Here and there upon his east,
As he stands for hours popping
Every letter iu its place.;
Heaven send the useful printer
Ever comfort mortals need,
For our nights were dull in winter
, A Had we not the news to read.
Sad would be the world's condition
V ; If no printer boys were founjl j -, !
Ignorance and superstition, I
Sin and suffering would abound.
'.Yea, it is the busy prii-t ;r
-Rolls the car of knowledge oh,
And a gloomy moutal winter '
Soon would reign if he wenj gone.
Money's useful, yet the winters!
- Fill not half so much a place
As the busy, toiling printers,
, - Fingeriug type before the ca ;c. ,
Yet while the type they're busy setting,
i: Oft somf thankless popinjay,
Leave the country, kindly letting
; Printers whistle for their paV.
Oh 1 ingratitude ungracious !
Are those on enlightened sol
Men with minds so incapacious
As to slight the printer's toil '
See him ! how extremely busy,
fingering type before the case,
Toil ng, till he's almost dizzy,
To eialt the human race. .

The Yankee Factory piRLS.--In
one of the factories in Maine, re
cently, the proprietors reduced the
wages, whereupon there was a general
determination to strike; and as they
were obliged to give a month's notice
before quitting work, they had mean
while issued a circular , to the world at
large, in which is the following interest
ing paragraph : We arenow working
out our notice can turn our hand to

y Labor Conducive to Long Life.
In view of the short duration of life
entailed by some occupations, it must
be regarded as a consoling, yet a sub
lime fact, that labor in general, docs not
tend to shorten life , but, on the con
trary, by strengthening health, length
ens life ; while on the other hand, idle
pess and luxury arc productive of the
same results as the most unhealthy
occupations. Dr. Guy, an Englishman,
in calculating the average duration of
life among the wealthy classes, arrived
at the. very surprising result with 're
gard to adults, that the higher the po
sition in the social scale, the more un-e
limited their means, the less the proba
bility of a long life.
We have so long been accustomed to
consider the possession of riches as the
best guarantee for physical welfare, that
many will be surprised to hear thit the
probability of the duration of life les
fens, with regard to adults in each class
of the population, in the same degree
as the beneficial impulse for occupation
is lacking. If a person who for a long
time has lived in active life retires from
business, it may be taken for granted,
with a probability of ten to one, that
he had seized the most effective means
J,o shorten life. We may smile at the
eoapmaker who, after having formally
retired from business, went, neverthe
less, on each day of soap boiling in his
workshop; but it must also be acknow
ledged that his instict did not mislead
him. Of all conditions of life, idleness
is hardest for nature to combat; and
this is especially true of persons who
have aecustoraea themselves to a busy
Ufa.

The next Sunday ho appeared in his

The Bachelor Juror. A gentle
man who is rather given to story tell

hen I was a young man I spent
several years in the South, residing for
a while at Port Hudson on the Missis

was going on thereabout that time, and
it was not always an easy matter to ob

On my name being called I informed
his honor, the Judge, that I was not, a
freeholder, and therefore not qualified
to serve.

Port Hudson.".

"How long have you lived in that
manner ?"
"About six months."
"I think you are qualified," gravely
remarked the judge ; "for I have never
